Meditation & Dianetics

Reference: Course on Subject Clearing

The ancient meditation is about focusing on one’s breath to get rid of all distractions, and then resolving anomalies in whatever came up in one’s consciousness. The resolution occurred when a person concentrated his attention on the anomaly and discovered its content.

What Dianetics added to meditation was, to select body somatic to look at instead of any anomaly. This led to discovering past painful incidents including some samskars (genetic painful incidents) and their content.

But not all body somatic are due to singular, well-defined incidents. Some may take a gradient approach to resolve many anomalies before the body somatic could be resolved. Here is my criticism of Dianetics (the precursor of Scientology).

.

Dianetics, Criticism of

Apparently, the author of Dianetic thesis (Hubbard) is able to produce results where others run into difficulty. Therefore, the Dianetic procedure needs to be examined more closely. In my observation, many difficulties arise because of the violation of the gradient in approaching the engram.

According to the laws of returning, the analytical awareness starts to shut down as one approaches the engram, and the thinking increasingly dramatizes the content of the engram. The person is not aware of this change but the auditor is. The auditor is then required to navigate the preclear through it skillfully.

According to the thesis, the auditor’s dynamic assists the preclear’s dynamic in overcoming the effects of the laws of returning. But in practice, the auditor takes over the awareness of the preclear instead of assisting it. Even the use of E-meter brings awareness to the auditor only. The preclear is simply being told what to do, and he is never in command of himself while approaching the engram. He mechanically obeys either the engram or the auditor.

Only the preclear can handle his aberrations. The auditor can only support, encourage and guide him but he can’t approach and assimilate the engram for the preclear. The only solution is for the preclear to remain in control of his awareness while approaching the engram and assimilating its content. This requires the preclear to overcome the effects of the law of returning.

It is important to remember that Hubbard was an expert hypnotist and he thought in terms of returning. So, he may not have even considered the possibility of neutralizing the engram without returning.

In hypnotism, the hypnotist installs a hypnotic command. That command can be neutralized by recalling the moment that command was installed. Hypnotist can easily do it because he knows when he installed that command. But the situation is very different in life. One suspects that there is a painful incident, which installed an engram in the mind but nothing is known about this incident. Engram is not like a simple hypnotic command. It has many tentacles reaching into many logic circuits of the mental matrix. Its relationship with the mind is much more complex compared to that of a simple hypnotic command.

The dianetic approach is to attack the source of pain (the engram). It tries to push through the pain to locate and re-experience the engram. It neglects the very many and much finer relationships that need to be straightened out in the process of neutralizing the engram. Thus it violates the principle of gradient. The more the gradient is violated, the more forceful is the reaction of the engram. The laws of returning are simply the result of violating the gradient. There are no such laws in play when the engram is approached on a gradient, as in subject clearing.

The subject clearing approach allows the engram to unwind itself through free association on its own natural gradient. The preclear simply focuses on the aberration that is bothering him. He examines that aberration in detail. He lets the mind associate non-judgmentally all the data that comes up in the context of that aberration. He objectively watches the reactions and even the strong emotions that come up. He lets all such reactions run out as they may. He doesn’t interfere even when the awareness seems to attenuate as in falling asleep. These are contents of the engram getting released to the mental matrix.

It does not matter what the preclear has done or what has been done to him. He does not guess or search for the contents of the engram. If a phrase is running around in his head he simply focuses on it. He experiences whatever comes up without resisting. He may be supported, encouraged and guided by a subject clearing auditor. But it is the preclear’s dynamic that lies behind this free association. Using the gradient of free association any engram can be reached safely and easily.

The Dianetic thesis seems to blame any lack of success on incompetent auditing. It is noted that a proper thesis would be effective and easy to apply at the same time. Hopefully, the subject clearing approach shall be able to overcome the difficulties that have plagued the dianetic procedure.

The out-gradient in dianetic procedure ends up in the auditor taking over the awareness of the preclear instead of assisting it.

NOTE: Even the Scientology Grades and OT Levels suffer from the same problem. At OT Levels, the auditor is replaced by the E-meter. The E-meter and “Hubbard’s rigid theory and instructions” take over the awareness of the preOT instead of assisting it.

This seems to have become ingrained so much so that the preclear is expected to submit to the dictates of the organization delivering auditing. This organization is presently the “Church of Scientology”, which closely monitors all its parishioners and expects them to comply mindlessly with its “code of ethics”. It keeps them in line through a system of reward and punishment. Anyone who rebels against the control of the Church is declared a “potential trouble source” or a “suppressive person”.

Fortunately, with subject clearing approach one can audit oneself to great improvement. He can then help others get started with their auditing. Only this way can a grass roots movement be started which is up to meeting the demands of the society for relief from aberration.

Subject Clearing Scientology

Reference: Course on Subject Clearing

Processing is the application of a procedure to bring about an improvement in a person’s condition. In Subject Clearing, the processes have been obtained from the study of Vedic Hinduism, Buddhism, Psychoanalysis and Scientology.

In Subject Clearing, you can always go back to a previously applied process and run it again.

.

Process

This Subject Clearing process explores some Scientology concepts.

Look up these words in the sequence given below.
STATIC, THETA, MEST, THETA-MEST THEORY, POSTULATE, AWARENESS, THETAN, EXTERIORIZATION, OPERATING THETAN.

You may look up their definitions from Scientology dictionary. You may study these concepts from Scientology materials. The subject cleared definitions for these concepts are provided below.

Contemplate on these concepts until you are fully satisfied with your understanding. If you come across an anomaly handle it with Subject Clearing Process 6 (Viewpoint).

.

STATIC
The subject clearing reveals that “Static” is a definite postulate of Hubbard on which the subject of Scientology rests. “Static” has no material or physical attributes, but it definitely has certain thought attributes. The anomaly is that Hubbard is setting up “Static” as an absolute, but it is a postulate with known attributes. This makes “Static” something knowable relative to the Unknowable, and not an absolute. See The Definition of STATIC.

.

THETA
Hubbard uses Theta as a mathematical symbol for the Static. In Scientology, Static, or Theta, is actually being used as a symbol for the ideal attributes of mankind. From Subject Clearing point of view, Theta is the Unknowable. The ability to postulate and become aware is an attribute that may be given to the Unknowable, because it does not become knowable until it is manifested as postulates. The postulated ideal characteristics for mankind are definitely in the realm of knowable. See The Definition of THETA.

.

MEST
Anything manifested is knowable. Anything knowable has some substance. Thought, Energy and Matter are all knowable. They all have substance. Thought appears as pure space, energy has “energy space,” and matter has “material space.” From thought to energy to matter we have increasing condensation of substance. Time provides a measure of that condensation.

MEST is  an acronym formed from the initial letters matter, energy, space and time. MEST, therefore, represents the whole spectrum of substance from thought to energy to matter, that has the characteristics of space and time. Substance does not exclude thought.

Scientology makes the error of limiting the designation of “MEST” to the physical universe of energy and matter. But MEST equally describes the thought universe. In short, MEST is properly the designation for the “Knowable universe.” See The Definition of MEST.

.

THETA-MEST THEORY
There is an unbridgeable division between the Knowable and the Unknowable. See The Definition of STATIC. MEST is properly the designation for the “Knowable universe.” See The Definition of MEST. Therefore, THETA is properly the designation for the Unknowable. See The Definition of THETA.

A natural division exists between the Knowable universe and the Unknowable. But Hubbard makes an arbitrary division between the physical universe and thought, which are different aspects of the knowable universe. This is a basic anomaly in Scientology. See The Definition of Theta-MEST Theory.

.

POSTULATE
A postulate explains a whole lot of observed phenomena. Therefore, there has to be a set of postulates that explains the knowable universe. Such a set of postulates must be continuous, consistent and harmonious to be able to explain all phenomena and what may be beyond and as yet unknowable. The property of continuity, consistency and harmony makes up the Principle of Oneness. This principle is ignored in Scientology. See The Definition of POSTULATE.

.

AWARENESS
Awareness accompanies any manifestation. With awareness there is knowingness. Manifestation occurs as there are postulates followed by considerations. The abilities to postulate and to become aware go together. These abilities form the concept of Self that pervades everything but has no individuality. This concept does not exist in Scientology. See The Definition of AWARENESS.

.

THETAN
Thetan is essentially the postulate of individual beingness, which is energized by theta. This individuality is defined by definite goals and behavior characteristics. The programming of the thetan consists of the blueprint that produces the body and the mind. Body is generated by the lower end of this programming, whereas, the conscious mind is formed by the upper end of the programming. The immortality of thetan is limited to theta only because the individuality is perishable. In short, the thetan is a sophisticated system where the theta part makes the thetan aware of being aware and enables it to observe and postulate and resolve anomalies.

Scientology fails to differentiate between theta (unknowable with the ability to postulate) and the actual postulates that comprise the individual beingness. Therefore, it identifies theta with the individuality and considers individuality to be immortal. This identification generates much disharmony as it ignores the Principle of Oneness. See The Definition of THETAN.

.

EXTERIORIZATION
A person feels exterior to anything when he is able to visualize it in totality. This may happen when a person has a vivid “out of body” experience. The person suddenly realizes that he is more than just a body. Until then he had been identifying himself with his body because his body has gotten the most attention from others, and his sense of individuality has built up on this attention.

The vividness of “out of body” experience springs from complete assimilation of related sensations in the mental matrix. This applies to sensation from the sense organs that assimilate routinely in mental matrix to create present time perceptions. It also applies to a facsimile coming forward on the genetic line and assimilating in the mental matrix for the first time appearing as a vivid “past life” memory. You can also create a vivid visualization of being out in space if all the related sensations happen to assimilate completely in the mental matrix.

A person can thus visualize being completely separate from the body. But this does not mean that he is literally without a body. He may even visualize being completely separate from this universe, but that doesn’t mean he is no longer connected to the universe. The ultimate exteriorization occurs when the person realizes that his sense of individuality is just his postulate. But that doesn’t take away his individuality.

Scientology looks at the “out of body” experiences and makes the error of interpreting it literally to mean that the “thetan” can separate himself from the body and survive body death. See The Definition of EXTERIORIZATION.

.

OPERATING THETAN
A person is an operating thetan when he no longer has any unassimilated impressions (facsimiles). His postulates and considerations are totally aligned with the natural laws governing thought, energy and matter. He, therefore, operates without any effort. He has resolved the anomalies to do with beingness. He is now resolving anomalies that exist in rest of the universe. He is able to pervade the whole universe and operate as one with the universe.

An operating thetan operates unrestricted by any considerations to do with the body. This is erroneously interpreted in Scientology to mean that an operating thetan can operate without a body. This is misinterpreted as an operating thetan being immortal. Unfortunately, this has become the goal in Scientology to achieve the immortality of one’s individuality. See The Definition of OPERATING THETAN.

Processing is the application of a procedure to bring about an improvement in a person’s condition. In Subject Clearing, the processes have been obtained from the study of Vedic Hinduism, Buddhism, Psychoanalysis and Scientology.

In Subject Clearing, you can always go back to a previously applied process and run it again.

.

Process

The is the most general process that helps one look more closely at any subject, problem, difficulty, fixation or anomaly.

The subject could be the body, or a painful part of the body, or some sickness. The problem may have to do with some relationship. The difficulty could involve some aspect of life. There may be a fixation that you want to resolve. Or, there is some something that simply does not make sense, and appears to be an anomaly.

Your first action is to use the first few step of this process to express that subject, problem, difficulty, fixation or anomaly in words so that it can be examined as part of an auditing question. You can then follow the subsequent steps to run that auditing question repetitively.

This process is a work horse that you can apply to anything. Make very sure that you understand each step of this process before you apply it.

Subject Clearing Discipline (old)

Please see The Discipline of Subject Clearing

Processing is the application of a procedure to bring about an improvement in a person’s condition. In Subject Clearing, the processes have been obtained from the study of Vedic Hinduism, Buddhism, Psychoanalysis and Scientology.

In Subject Clearing, you can always go back to a previously applied process and run it again.

.

Process

In Subject Clearing a certain discipline is necessary to see things as they are. Whether you are recalling something, or perceiving in present time, it must be accurate, with minimum distortion, for you to come to correct conclusion. This discipline is provided in the following document. Study it carefully.

The 12 Aspects of Mindfulness.

Here are the exercises to help you practice these 12 aspects of mindfulness. As you apply this discipline regularly to situations in your life, you will get better over time.

  1. Observe without Desires
  2. Observe without Assuming
  3. Observe what is Missing
  4. Observe the Incomprehensible
  5. Observe all Senses
  6. Let the Mind Un-stack
  7. Experience Fully
  8. Do not suppress
  9. Associate Data freely
  10. Observe beyond Name and Form
  11. Contemplate thoughtfully
  12. Let it be effortless

These 12 aspects of mindfulness are essential to running all the subsequent processes of Subject Clearing.

Commands

In Subject Clearing, one looks at a subject or parts of it. One is either observing the subject directly, or studying about the subject through observations made by somebody else. In the latter case one is using some means of communication, such as, a language.

In looking, one follows the Discipline of Subject Clearing.

The basic commands is as follows:

”This is interesting, but is there some anomaly here?”

An anomaly is any violation of the principle of oneness, such as, discontinuity (missing data), inconsistency (contradictory data), or disharmony (arbitrary data).

One may sense the anomaly in the form of a confusion (lack of clarity) or some tension. So, one my ask oneself:

“Is there some confusion or a lack of clarity here?”
“Is there some tension that I feel in relation to this item?”

You may word this command in many different ways. Your aim is to remove confusion, restore clarity and resolve any tension. You goal is to have no anomalies.

It is straightforward when you are observing the subject directly. But when you are using a language to “observe” the subject indirectly, you are required to visualize the subject correctly. In this case you must have a good grasp of that language.

Subject Clearing Recall (old)

Please see Memory Recall

Processing is the application of a procedure to bring about an improvement in a person’s condition. In Subject Clearing, the processes have been obtained from the study of Vedic Hinduism, Buddhism, Psychoanalysis and Scientology.

In Subject Clearing, you can always go back to a previously applied process and run it again.

.

Process

Another fundamental process in Subject Clearing is to understand how to recall one’s experience. Best recall occurs when you are totally relaxed, and you let your experience manifest itself. When you do so, the recall usually manifests itself immediately. This happens routinely when you are contemplating on something.

You may ask yourself right now for a time when you were happy. Now relax and make no effort. You will find that a moment when you were happy will manifest itself in your mind. It is an effortless process.

It is possible that a specific recall may not manifest. For example, if you want to recall what you ate for breakfast a week ago, a clear picture may not emerge. This is because the activity of eating breakfast has become so routine that it is assimilated with the background. You may simply get a general idea of what you might have eaten.

But a recall can also be suppressed, especially when it contains pain. For example, You may find it difficult to recall the details of an accident in which you were injured. However, as you go over that period of accident again and again in your mind, you may find the details emerging into focus.

It is also possible, that some recall is simply not there. In that case, you simply recognize that it is not there, and move on. If the recall is completely suppressed with no awareness at all, it may come up after some other experiences have been recalled. So, if the recall does not seem to be there, it is best to move on for now.

Sometimes, a vague impression may come up in recall. You may try to visualize, or imagine, more details, but it won’t be the exact experience. So, you recognize the difference and move on. The actual experience may resurface sooner or later.

The following exercise is designed to help you experience all of the above.

Recall Process
