Scientology provides the following definitions for THETAN.

Scientology Technical Dictionary
“THETAN, 1. the living unit we call, in Scn, a thetan, that being taken from the Greek letter theta, the mathematic symbol used in Scn to indicate the source of life and life itself.”
The source of life is theta, and a thetan is the phenomenon of human beingness and individuality. There must be postulates that explain the phenomenon of thetan.
“THETAN, 2. the awareness of awareness unit which has all potentialities but no mass, no wave-length and no location.”
The theta part of the thetan can become aware of the postulates that underlie the phenomenon of thetan itself.
“THETAN, 3. the being who is the individual and who handles and lives in the body.”
Underlying thetan is the postulate of individuality energized by theta. This postulate applies to the whole programming that expresses the blueprint of the body and the mind. Body is generated by the lower end of this programming, whereas, the mind is formed by the upper end of the programming.
“THETAN, 4. (spirit) is described in Scn as having no mass, no wave-length, no energy and no time or location in space except by consideration or postulate. The spirit is not a thing. It is the creator of things.”
The thetan is theta plus certain postulates. Theta is the potentiality of the ability to postulate and become aware. The actuality of postulates and considerations then give substance to the thetan.
“THETAN, 5. the personality and beingness which actually is the individual and is aware of being aware and is ordinarily and normally the “person” and who the individual thinks he is. The thetan is immortal and is possessed of capabilities well in excess of those hitherto predicted for man.”
A person has a personality that is entirely individual. Underlying this personality (beingness) are postulates energized by theta. The person can become aware of these postulates, or his essential beingness as a thetan. His capabilities as thetan are determined by the postulates, and they are more than what is generally known. His theta aspect is an immortal potentiality; but the postulates are put there and can be removed.
“THETAN, 6. the name given to the life source. It is the individual, the being, the personality, the knowingness of the human being.”
Scientology does not clearly differentiate between theta (ability to postulate) and thetan (the postulate of individual beingness). The potential of knowingness lies in theta. The actual knowingness comes from postulates.
“THETAN, 7. energy-space production unit.”
The capability of production applies more to theta. What it produces applies more to postulates.
“THETAN, 8. in the final analysis what is this thing called thetan? It is simply you before you mocked yourself up and that is the handiest definition I know of.”
The postulate that mocks up the thetan is the postulate of individuality defined by a definite goal and behavior characteristics.
“THETAN, 9. the person himself—not his body or his name, the physical universe, his mind, or anything else; that which is aware of being aware; the identity which is the individual. The thetan is most familiar to one and all as you.”
As described above, thetan comes about with the postulate of individuality.
“THETAN, 10. a static that can consider, and can produce space and energy and objects.”
The static is the Unknowable. It is symbolized by the theta (which specifies the ability to postulate). It postulates an individuality, which brings about the thetan. The process of postulating also produces substance, along with space, and time.

Thetan is essentially the postulate of individual beingness, which is energized by theta. This individuality is defined by definite goals and behavior characteristics. The programming of the thetan consists of the blueprint that produces the body and the mind. Body is generated by the lower end of this programming, whereas, the conscious mind is formed by the upper end of the programming. The immortality of thetan is limited to theta only because the individuality is perishable. In short, the thetan is a sophisticated system where the theta part makes the thetan aware of being aware and enables it to observe and postulate and resolve anomalies.
Scientology fails to differentiate between theta (unknowable with the ability to postulate) and the actual postulates that comprise the individual beingness. Therefore, it identifies theta with the individuality and considers individuality to be immortal. This identification generates much disharmony as it ignores the Principle of Oneness.

Comments
It is good to break definitions into their discrete parts because if the individual parts are inconsistent, then is less probable that they can be brought together into a sensible whole.
For example, THETAN, 1. the living unit . . . definition is easily challenged for its logical inconsistency. By this I question, is not the human body the basic living unit of the human? Does not the human body contain separate discrete (fractal) living units which have their own discrete boundaries, their own discrete spacetime?
I shall start with the body-mind system being a unit.
I challenge the concept of THETAN. An example of this is the idea that it is eternal, having no beginning and no ending. The universe may be eternal, but how would we know? Our individual lives seem to have discrete beginnings and endings, but how discrete is it?
The thought of what and how we abstract comes to mind. The idea that everything that we know has no absolute beginning nor absolute ending yet we abstract that within that eternal set everything has an abstract beginning and ending. For examples, the beginning of humans at conception. There is a discrete abstract of a beginning. Yet is the earlier meiosis or the later birthing the beginning? Does death begin at 30, 40, . . . 70 or 80 years of age? Is the heart failure or the brain failure an absolute death? . . . and of what is it the death?
Discreteness appears only when you are considering the macro aspects. As you look more closely at micro level, you find a continuity.
THETAN, 2. the awareness of awareness unit. . .
What happens to this awareness unit under anesthesia? What happens to this awareness unit after a debilitating stroke? What happens to the awareness unit after concussive brain injury?
Good questions. How will a Scientologist answer?
We know what is taught in Scientology. I object to the aspect of that teaching which is conveniently circular and tautological. Example: The aware-of-awareness unit sleeps in an “analytically attenuated” state, while the reactive mind records its all content of the unconscious incident.
1. Question: How would we say that the reactive mind cannot be put to sleep but that, even while recording all of the content of the unconscious incident, it cannot impinge its flight-or-flight reactions onto the sleeping human body?
2. Question: When did the reactive mind have its inception? For example, did it come to exist during the OTIII Wall of Fire incident? . . . or did it have an earlier beginning? (In terms of geologic time, 75,000,000 years ago is the near past.)
3. Question: Mostly, my OT friends are dead or efficiently dying, and routinely dying of cancer. Why is this? OT materials assign these corruption-type, cellular breakdown diseases to the body-thetans which are stuck to one’s body. Yet, these unwanted, unnecessary, and harmful entities are removed mentally. I would like to discuss this concept, this mechanism, this cure, and this failure to cure. One for one, these friends are intelligent people of goodwill. As an example, my observation that the success rate of saving these OTs is commensurate with the success rate of any Abrahamic religion, or say, the true believers demonstrated in the movie “Logan’s Run.”
4. Question: Why is that success rate so low and is there any fallacious reasoning that is obvious from what I have written?

Is there a reactive mind or an analytical mind like there is black and white? I don’t think so. I see a gradient from analytical thinking to reactivity. I prefer the concept of mental matrix and the degree of assimilation of incoming sensations. See MENTAL MATRIX in this glossary.

Our input from the sense organs is all in the form of sensations. It is only when these sensations break down into perceptual elements and assimilated into mental matrix that we have perception. If sensations do not break down then we have unconsciousness and unassimilated impressions.
The unconsciousness is there because the sensations do not get immediately converted into perceptions. Later when they get converted and we recover the perceptions, then we say, “Oh! when he was unconscious his reactive recorded all this.” Hubbard simply have a wrong explanation of what unconsciousness is.

There is no reactive mind. There only are unassimilated impressions. Such impressions are created whenever the mind is unable to break down the incoming sensations.
Past impressions are part of the DNA programming. This programming goes back to as far back as when the first DNA molecule was formed. When we break down those past impressions and assimilate them, we may not have the right context within which to interpret them. They come through as very basic raw data. The mind may produce some dreamlike interpretation. That significance is not important. What is important is assimilation of those impressions.

The simple answer to your question is, “People die. Even OTs die. They die of cancer too.” You probably want to know if there is a correlation between OT auditing and cancer. Well, that is an interesting question.
My understanding is that BTs (body thetans) are the viewpoints of dramatic personnel in the engrams one has. On OT Levels, one is simply trying to breakdown the engrams into manageable bits and pieces, so one may unwind and assimilate them into the mental matrix. Hubbard associated a lot of mystery with this process because of his own misunderstood on what beingness really is. Give this definition of BT to your friends and see what they have to say.

The success rate is so low because of Hubbard’s own misunderstanding of what human beingness is. His original theory of engrams (unassimilated impressions) was fine, but he went off the rails with his misinterpretation of the phenomenon of “exteriorization.” I have been tackling this subject here.

I have a good and long time friend who is off his NOTs Scn processing because of a stroke that is affecting his memory. This has been for longer than a year. When we visit, he seems himself to me. His tongue is limber and he is functional, even if advanced in age. Yet his memory is failing him to be able to accomplish the processes of the NED auditing.
In this case, would we say that his basic self (thetan), which is not physical, depends upon his injured brain to communicate with his mind which we are taught is also not in his injured brain? Is there a way to bring these separate concepts into a logical whole understanding?
This is what I am trying to accomplish through KHTK research.
Without criticism, can you point to any concept which has been or is resolving to an understanding focus?

Yes, the concepts of Static, Theta and Thetan are my current focus, and they are resolving for me.
In summation of my comments, I propose that our understandings of ourselves and of our environments are not even fledgling. If Man survives, possibly in a thousand years we may become fledgling. But at this spacetime, it is my observation that Mankind has barely begun its existence.

I like big and small numbers. 4.5 Billion years, the supposed age of the Earth, compared to the 250,000 years that man has been screwing things up is like only 5.5556e-5, or .005% of the Earth’s history. They say that the dinosaurs were here 1000 times that long.
But I think that our egos more than fill any deficiency! LOL

This reasoning above is a little convoluted. The simplicity is:
Theta=Source of life, life itself
Thetan=the living unit
In truth theta and thetan are just symbols that have significance assigned to them.
It is a matter of understanding what those significances are.
