Being a disturbance, the awareness that fills the emptiness is full of ACTIVITY. This activity is expressed as continual oscillations between two states—perception and consciousness. We may refer to this continual activity as the energy of awareness. This may translate as ALERTNESS.
These oscillations repeat themselves interminably. Each repetition is a CYCLE. The rate of repetition is referred to as the FREQUENCY of oscillations.
It is postulated that, like the field, awareness also consists of “constant energy per cycle”. So the alertness to frequency ratio is constant based on similarity of awareness to the field.
At this moment we lack the methods to measure either the alertness or the frequency of awareness numerically; but it is easy to verify that under situations that require increased alertness, one would be consulting one’s perceptions at a faster rate to obtain higher consciousness of the situation.
The physical field that fills the Emptiness as a disturbance, is aware of itself. The concept of field is well explored with scientific precision in physics. We may now explore the concept of awareness with equal precision in Buddhism and Scientology.
Whereas the electromagnetic field is the physical (MEST) aspect of the disturbance, the field of awareness is the spiritual (THETA) aspect of the same disturbance.
Thus, we have a categorization of reality into physical (MEST) and spiritual (THETA) characteristics.
The electromagnetic field is continually oscillating between electrical and magnetic characteristics. This continual alter-is-ness is necessary to separate the electromagnetic field from emptiness. The field of awareness must also oscillate continually for the same reason. It is postulated that awareness (field of theta) oscillates between perception and understanding.
Oscillations give substance not only to the physical energy field of electromagnetism, but also to the spiritual energy field of theta (awareness).
Perception starts out in the form of physical senses, but as it gets assimilated in the mental matrix it produces understanding. The degree of understanding, in turn, influences what the mind perceives. This interchange between perception and understanding becomes obvious in the natural tendency in people to seek out what agrees with them.
All substance has inertia. The characteristic of inertia is to maintain a certain status quo. Electromagnetic field has inertia in the sense that it maintains its frequency. Theta field of awareness also has inertia in the sense that it also maintains its frequency of specific awareness.
A theta field of awareness is also substantial with the property of INERTIA.
As the frequency increases, the oscillations become denser, and the cycles of oscillation shrink in wavelength. The increased “density” of oscillations shows up as increased inertia. The increase in inertia tends to make awareness more “solid” in the sense that it becomes increasingly fixated. This is represented in Scientology by the viewpoint moving down the Know-to-Mystery scale.
Increase in frequency makes the theta field of awareness more fixated.
On a scale, all values are measured from the reference point of zero. This works because zero has no value, and it does not add anything to the value being measured. Similarly, in this universe, all phenomena can be viewed objectively from the reference point of emptiness. This works because emptiness is devoid of all phenomena, and it does not add anything to the phenomenon being viewed.
The viewpoint referenced from emptiness is devoid of preconceived notion.
The reference point of “Me, my self or I” produces a narrow viewpoint that leads to irrational conclusions. But a viewpoint referenced from emptiness is aware of everything that fills the emptiness. Therefore, it can rationally comprehend everything present, and is objective.
We call the viewpoint referenced from emptiness as the Universal viewpoint. It is devoid of preconceived notion; and it views all phenomena objectively.
To look from the universal viewpoint, one must reject all preconceived notions, and only acknowledge what is seen at that moment. Here the moment can be as broad as the viewpoint. This is the viewpoint of science.
The universal viewpoint does not fixate itself as originating from some identity—even the notion of “self” is not there.
The field that fills the emptiness is a disturbance. Therefore it is full of ACTIVITY. This activity is expressed as continual oscillations between two states—electric and magnetic. We may refer to this activity as ENERGY.
This activity is made up of oscillations that are repeating themselves interminably at a certain rate. Each repetition is a CYCLE, and the rate of repetition is the FREQUENCY. Both cycle and frequency are properties of the field.
Each cycle of oscillation consists of the same amount of activity, or energy, regardless of the frequency. This fact leads to the phenomenon of quantization of energy. This is because only complete cycles are involved in interactions. Since the cycles may be counted, it appears that only discrete amounts of energy are involved in interactions.
The whole subject of Quantum Mechanics in physics is constructed from this phenomenon of quantization. The “amount of energy per cycle” is a very fundamental constant of the universe.
We may determine this universal constant by dividing the energy of the field by commensurate frequency (E/f). This gives us the value, 6.626176 x 10-34joule-seconds. This value is represented by the Plank’s constant ‘h’.
As frequency increases, the energy of the field also increases, and so does inertia. Thus, energy and inertia always increase and decrease together.
This cycle of energy cannot be divided further into smaller cycles. Therefore, the Planck’s constant ‘h’ serves as the smallest unit of energy.
The cycle of energy gives the appearance of a quantized (discrete) universe. However, the cycle is continuous in itself.
The Heart Sutra in Buddhism defines EMPTINESS as no Birth no Death, no Being no Non-being, no Defilement no Purity, no Increasing no Decreasing. In other words, in emptiness there is complete absence of any lasting phenomena.
The viewpoint of emptiness is just that. It is totally fresh. It is completely clean. There are no preconceived notions, no fixed ideas, no bias, etc. In short, the concept of emptiness is not viewed through any filters. It is simply what it is.
From a scientific viewpoint, this is the ultimate reference point from which all phenomena is perceived objectively. No other reference point is required to understand emptiness. This is like the zero of a scale from which all values on that scale are measured.
A reference point aligns everything that follows, into order. In the absence of a reference point things devolve into confusion. It is common to assume an arbitrary reference point just to avoid the immediate confusion, even when it can’t resolve everything.
The Semitic GOD and the Scientology STATIC are arbitrary reference points. They are assumed to resolve the confusion of physical reality. But they cannot resolve the reality they represent. To understand the reality of GOD and/or STATIC a more basic reference point is needed.
Emptiness has that property of being inherently understood because it denotes the absence of lasting phenomena. From this reference point it is possible to give an objective meaning to any phenomena knowing that it may change. Emptiness itself is not a phenomenon, just like zero is not a value.
EMPTINESS is the ultimate reference point from which all phenomena can be understood objectively without any preconceived notion.
