The Structure of a Thetan

thetanA “photon” is an outcome of an electromagnetic wave acquiring particle like properties. Similarly, thetan seems to be an outcome of theta acquiring individuality.

A particle acquires an identity through its discreteness, form and inertia. Similarly, a thetan seems to acquire a definition through its “discreteness” of individuality and “inertia” of identity.

The wave properties of electromagnetism seem to condense into the form of a particle. Similarly, the awareness properties of theta seem to condense into the form of a thetan.

The thetan seems to be the resultant of awareness vectors formed by considerations, desires and impulses. Thus, a thetan may be defined in terms of complex interactions among the elemental vectors of considerations, desires and impulses.

These elemental vectors seem to make up the thetan’s intention, thetan’s will, and the thetan itself. Their source seems to be beyond the thetan.

Thetan is the resultant identity. An identity has a localized form, and also a localized occurrence. Thus, a thetan has a location in space and time (see the picture above).

The thetan is considered to be the spirit, which is basically the aliveness of the body.

The above essay came about as we looked at Thetan, individuality, identity as part of the Scientology Rundown of L-10 through the KHTK process of Mindful Subject Clearing

Continuing with the same rundown we shall now be looking at mental machinery, a mind, a skill, etc.

A thetan may disintegrate into uncoordinated raw considerations, desires and impulses.

This gives us a look into the mental macinery and the mind.

  • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 7:55 AM

Thetan is a composite of considerations, desires and impulses.

Individuality is the discreteness or uniqueness of a thetan.

Identity is the inertia of a thetan.

Mental machinery seems to be how considerations, desires and impulses are structured within a thetan.

Mind seems to be the programming of the mental machinery.

This is my first shot at the definition of these terms.

Let’s examine the following quote from THE PHOENIX LECTURES of Hubbard.

“There is a level lying between considerations and A, R and C and this is Is-ness. It’s the consideration of Is-ness. Things are because you consider that they are and therefore something that is, is considered is. If you don’t consider that it is, it of course can be considered to be something else. But if you recognize that it is a consideration you only have to recognize that it is. And if you recognize that something is, then you have recognized merely that it is a consideration.

“As soon as you have recognized that something is, IS, you have reduced it to a consideration, and that’s that.

“One has affinity because he considers he has affinity. One has reality because he considers he has reality. One has agreement because he considers he has agreement. One has disagreement because he considers he has disagreement. One has a Dynamic (A Dynamic: any one of the eight subdivisions of the Dynamic Principle of Existence — SURVIVE — which are: The urge to survive as, or to the survival of, (1) Self, (2) Sex and family, (3) One’s group, (4) Mankind, (5) Any life forms, (6) MEST: Matter, Energy, Space, Time — the physical universe, (7) Theta, spirit; the Thetan, a spiritual being, thought, etc., (8) Supreme Being — the “Infinity Dynamic”) — one has a Dynamic because one considers he has a Dynamic.”

    From http://1913.mshaffer.com/d/search/_words.word,consider

    CONSIDER verb

    1. To fix the mind on, with a view to a careful examination; to think on with care; to ponder; to study; to meditate on. I will consider thy testimonies.

    2. To look at attentively; to observe; to examine. She considereth a field, and buyeth it.

    3. To have regard to; to take into view or account; to pay due attention to; to respect. Consider, sir, the chance of war: the day was yours by accident.

    4. To estimate; to think; to regard; to view. Considered as plays, his works are absurd.

    Basic sense = “view attentively”

    .

  • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 8:39 AM

    Also, look up CONSIDERATION here:

    http://1913.mshaffer.com/d/search/_words.word,consideration

Basic sense of CONSIDERATION is mindfulness

It is what it is. Ha ha!

  • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 8:44 AM

    Now look up DESIRE here:

    http://1913.mshaffer.com/d/search/_words.word,desire

Is it wishing for the star? Is it the longing that E.T. symbolized? Is it attempt to reach a closure? Is it an attempt to restore the equilibrium as in an oscillation that generates the wave?

Desire = wish to restore the equiibrium.

    • Chris Thompson  On December 12, 2013 at 8:53 AM

Desire is the yearning to fill a void. Physically it is the universe seeking equilibrium.

  • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 8:50 AM

Here is the definition of IMPULSE:

    http://1913.mshaffer.com/d/search/_words.word,impulse

Is it the beat of the heart driven forward as a pulse throughout the body? Is it the electromagnetic wave springing forth from the oscillating charge?

    Consideration –> Desire –> Impulse

This seems to be the basic model of a thetan when it is not considering itself… and just IS… Ha ha!

    .

    • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 8:52 AM

But, unfortunately, it gets mired with complexity of unresolved inconsistencies.

      .

    • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 8:55 AM

The thetan starts to consider itself… and then the trouble starts… ha ha!

The solution is simply look at the inconsistency that is impinging, and keep looking at it more and more closely until it resolves.

      .

    • Chris Thompson  On December 12, 2013 at 8:58 AM

Aren’t we using consideration in a different way here? We might consider then desire, but does desire need this preamble, always?

      • 2ndxmr  On December 12, 2013 at 10:56 AM

V:”Is it an attempt to restore the equilibrium as in an oscillation that generates the wave?”

That is probably as good of a physical / actual description as you could get. A desire for a harmonious tone / vibration. A feedback loop to attempt to minimize the disharmony.

On the other hand, one will sometimes add to the feedback (positive feedback), stoke the fire, etc. in order to blow into a new tone or blow through a torment of the old one. Murderous rage would fit that description.

        • Chris Thompson  On December 12, 2013 at 11:19 AM

2x Murderous rage would fit that description

          ct yeah, battle rage

  • 2ndxmr  On December 12, 2013 at 1:26 PM

In your vector idea of a thetan, desires could be seen to have an opposite vector: repulsions.

Considerations and impulses don’t strike me as having opposite or dichotomous vectors.

Does anyone else see a vector the opposite of consideration? Nullification? Not even that seems to have quite the feeling of the same vector.

    • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 1:34 PM

Consideration, desire and impulse are probably aspects of the same thing. Vectors would have 360 degrees of different orientations. There can be two considerations in conflict, or two desires in conflict, or two impulses in conflict. There is also the generation and resolution of these elements.

      .

What did the Buddha say about desire? Something like that we had to eliminate desire to “ascend”?

“As long as there is this ‘thirst’ to be and to become, the cycle of continuity (samsāra) goes on. It can stop only when its driving force, this ‘thirst’, is cut off through wisdom which sees Reality, Truth, Nirvāna.” ~ Buddha

It seems that the desires subside when one has the wisdom to see reality for what it is.

This is similar to my own experience. The more I embrace the World (everything) — not particularly in a tree-hugging sort of way but that metaphor is ok too — the less impulsive and compulsive I feel.

      • Chris Thompson  On December 12, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong, I figure there are 41,253 degrees of orientation.

        • vinaire  On December 12, 2013 at 7:54 PM

I had omitted solid angles of 3 dimensions. I spoke only in terms of 2 dimensions. But, yes, you can look at directions in all 3 dimesions from a point. I don’t know how many degress that is. It would be in terms of 3 dimensional angle units and not 2 dimensional degrees.

        • Chris Thompson  On December 12, 2013 at 9:54 PM

I just figured that a sphere with circumference of 360 has and area of 41,253.

        • 2ndxmr  On December 13, 2013 at 12:33 AM

A vector and its opposite gives you a 180 degree relationship.

Basically, by vectorizing the thetan you are imbuing it with personality traits which is coming pretty close to a set of dimensions. These dimensions may be qualities with a quantity so a vector isn’t out of the question.

I don’t think that all the personality traits have an associated opposite. For instance, ego. What would be the opposite? Humble? Within a very closely defined domain, I suppose.

So what is a person who is neither egotistical nor humble? Can there be a zero, a null point between them? If these are really vector quantities, then, yes, we must include zero.

So what happens if we hit a zero on all these personality traits? Are we dead or have we hit the point of static?

        • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 6:00 AM

I think you hit the point of mindfulness. You become like a black body that absorbs and resolves everything and radiates nothing.

This is just an off-the-cuff conjecture.

        • 2ndxmr  On December 13, 2013 at 12:42 PM

V:”You become like a black body that absorbs and resolves everything and radiates nothing. ”

Yes, that would be very nearly it.

    • Chris Thompson  On December 13, 2013 at 6:31 PM

We’re using too specialized definitions of these words for me to get the idea. It’s seemingly too cryptic. But if you write more, describe more, I might catch up.

    • Chris Thompson  On December 13, 2013 at 6:41 PM

2x: In your vector idea of a thetan, desires could be seen to have an opposite vector: repulsions.

Ct: In the world of + and -, this idea makes sense. Then after doing that little trig solving for the area of a sphere as a way to model the number of “vector points” or possible directions, attitudes, etc., of a thetan (personality) it started me looking at vectors emotionally and socially as well as physically and it became apparent to me that degrees of social interactions such as using “manners” might be calculable with an eye to vectors. This is not a new idea. We have always referred to a person doing what seemed non-seq as ” ‘going-off’ on a tangent.” Also the “loose cannon” is “loose” when the person is pointing in so many vectors that one cannot predict where they will finally shoot.

Let’s get back to the discussion on L-10 that we started here:
    https://vinaire.me/2013/11/21/intention-to-harm/#comment-14277

The End Phenomenon of L-10 is,
Freedom from self-restraint. His reach (havingness) is increased.

SITUATION: The person is holding himself back.

This would mean conflicting considerations, desires and impulses. When these are fixed in place we have a fixed identity. I have been applying the process as outlined here:

    https://vinaire.me/2013/11/21/intention-to-harm/#comment-14279

In short, let me go back to applying MSC to the following items on the first dynamic in order to discover “identities” that needs to be addressed:

Thetan, individuality, identity, mental machinery, a mind, a skill, tool, clothing, career, identification human body parts, brain, body, cells, car, house, food, meals, vehicle, decorations, certificates, diplomas, body organs, viewpoints, a habit, appetite, ego, urge to survive as individual, auditing, hobby, medicine, self-improvement, study, book, ornament, grooming, personal hygiene, self-expression, health, product, GE, job, paycheck.

    .

    • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 9:09 PM

The first level of words in L-10 first dynamic list seem to be the following:

Thetan, individuality, identity, mental machinery, a mind, a skill, tool,

I think I have covered them pretty thoroughly above.

      .

    • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 9:26 PM

The next level seems to be made up of the following words:

body, human body parts, body organs, cells, brain,

Here we have a body that is composed of many body parts. Body organs seem to be entities on their own right. The body organs are made up of cells.

Cells of a body organ act in perfect coordination for the proper functioning of that organ. Body organs act in perfect coordination for the proper functioning of the body. Any inconsistency in that coordination is manifested as a disease or illness.

Brain is where all the coordination is organized. Electro-chemical systems are used for this purpose.

    • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 9:47 PM

The next level seems to be made up of the following words:

GE, food, meals, appetite, health, medicine, clothing, grooming, personal hygiene,

The cordination point of all body organs seems to have an idenity referred to as GE (genetic entity). The cycle starts with input of energy into the body through food. Lack of food is one of the serious problems in any human society.

Surprisingly, the body can adjust to low quantity of food by using it efficiently. This is where good appetite comes in. The body is digesting the food efficiently. This leads to good health.

Medicine supplies what is lacking in the normal input to the body. It tries to restore declining health. Body also needs clothing to protect it from harsh environment. Grooming and personal hygiene is necessary to protect oneself against bacterias and viruses.

    • vinaire  On December 14, 2013 at 6:50 AM

The next level seems to be made up of the following words:

Urge to survive as individual, ego, identification, a habit, viewpoints, self-expression,

A person is made up of considerations, desires and impulses. Individuality is a unique arrangement of these components. It adds up to a certain awareness as a whole, which is called ego. Ego considers itself to be a single thing. It is not aware of its structure due to identification among considerations.

There is an overall desire to continue to exist as that ego. This becomes a habit. The ego then seems to be something permanent. It acquires certain viewpoints. It starts to express itself in a certain way.

      .

    • vinaire  On December 14, 2013 at 7:03 AM

The next level seems to be made up of the following words:

career, certificates, diplomas, job, paycheck, house, car, vehicle, decorations, ornament,

A person is expressing his individuality through his skills and viewpoints, that makes him suited for a career. He walks that path and acquires certificates and diplomas. These get him recognized for what he is in the overall structure of the society.

Thus, he gets a job that is fulfilling for him and beneficial for the society. He gets a regular paycheck for the service he provides. He can then provide himself with a livelihood that includes house and cars.

He continues to express his individuality through the vehicles he chooses, how he decorates his house, and the ornaments he wears.

      .

    • vinaire  On December 14, 2013 at 7:23 AM

The last group of words in this list for first dynamic seems to be:

self-improvement, auditing, hobby, study, book, product,

As the person continues to be a certain self or ego in the society, experiences are accumulated and a need for greater consistency is felt. Self is not something fixed; it can be improved. To improve self, a greater harmony is looked for among the considerations, desires and impulses that constitute that self.

Audting of self (ego) consists of looking at intimate considerations, desires and impulses for what they are. It also requires awareness of considerations, desires and impulses that exist in one’s environment. The idea underlying this auditing is not to resist but to let these considerations, desires and impulses readjust among themselves and become consistent and harmonious.

A lot of experimenting goes along with this auditing. This is where hobbies and studies enter into the picture to make sense out of inconsistencies one encounters along the way. Good books and internet are wonderful resource. The final product is a well rounded and consistent personality.

      .

    • vinaire  On December 14, 2013 at 7:26 AM

This seems to end a review of the first dynamic through L-10. I don’t know if Hubbard intended it this way, but KHTK seems to lead us this way.

The above is just a general summary. Each word in the above list may bring to view different inconsistencies to different individuals. One may then sort out those inconsistencies through KHTK approach of mindfulness.

      Happy hunting!

      .

  • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 6:53 AM

So far I have sorted out the following for myself:

Thetan is a composite of considerations, desires and impulses.

Individuality is the discreteness or uniqueness of a thetan.

Identity is the inertia of a thetan.

Mental machinery is how considerations, desires and impulses are structured within a thetan.

Mind is the programming of the mental machinery.

On skill, the first item that comes to my mind is maths and the ability it imparts to thinking systematically. I am doing well in MSCing the subject of Calculus.

Here the focus is on isolating the key concepts and clarifying the overview of the subject. I don’t need to get into the nitty gritty at the moment. I am simply addressing items in Calculus that have been pulling on my attention. I know that there are many things that I do not understand, but if they are not pulling on my attention I leave them aside.

The priority is to handle those things that are pulling on my attention.

      SKILL
Origin: 1125–75; Middle English < Old Norse skil distinction, difference…

      .

So, what are the skills that distinguish me? What are honestly my skills? Have I pretended to have skills that I do not have? Am I fully utilizing the skills that I do have? These are very interesting questions.

I think that I like writing. I am discovering abilities in that area and I can build up on that. I think I can wrap this one (MSC on skill) up now.

      .

  • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 7:32 AM

It seems that MSC (Mindful Subject Clearing) takes care of overts and withholds in its stride. One doesn’t have to dig for overts and withholds. One simply looks at them fully as they come up.and acknowledge them for what they are.

    Ha ha!

  • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 8:32 AM

Skills seems to determine one’s individuality.

So, an honest assessment of one’s skills is bound to clear up how one should look at oneself as an individual.

    One may discover
    (a) what others, or the society, expected of oneself.
    (b) What one was forced into being through schooling or profession.
    (c) What pretensions one has been putting out.
    (d) And, finally, the individual one truly is.

It is not a matter of liking or disliking, or being good or bad. It is a matter of mindfully perceiving the individual one is

And that establishes the ground one can confidently start building up from.

    .

  • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 8:36 AM

Skill = what makes one stand out as an individual; what determines one’s individuality.

A tool implies that which facilitates the accomplishment of what one desires to achieve.

What tools have I observed? Big machines used in construction and for building roads. What tools have I used? Kitchenware… for sports and entertainment… in school learning (geometry)… in my profession…

What tools have become part of me? Thinking patterns… habits… Now this an interesting area.

    • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 8:59 AM

Look at whatever comes up. DO NOT DIG. Just carry on to the next thing.

    • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 1:55 PM

We are exploiting others when we are using them as tools. There should be a harmony of desires within oneself as well as in the society and nature.

Any disharmony is an inconsistency that needs to be looked at closely. In order to resolve an inconsistency one should be willing to change one’s environment as well as oneself.

In short one should be willing to let the considerations, desires and impulses level themselves out regardless of where they belong.

  • Chris Thompson  On December 13, 2013 at 9:06 AM

    Using Vectors:
41,253 Full degrees of orientation can be further divided into 60 minutes per degree giving 1.4851 x 10^8 and if we divide this yet further into 60 seconds per minute, then 5.35 x 10^11 degrees of attitude. This describes quite a lot of possibilities of choices in attitude that using your idea of vectors that one may take on. And yet, on a self or beingness the size of the Earth, of these smallest described degrees of deviation, the inhabitable domain of one second of attitude still allows for one’s attituide to occupy a circular area >57 feet across or >31 meters across. Even at this smallest calculation, this leaves still quite a lot of elbow room for changing one’s mind.

I think this vector idea is a good look at thetans, personaities, and attitudes. I like this metaphor to make and view a model of the structure of a thetan, which I take to mean one’s personality. It seems consistent with 3 dimensional space, allows for movement of time, and seems consistent with 2X’s proposition of “faces” which present a reason for the different presentations of waves vs. particles. Yeah, I’m liking it and it gives me some more ideas about personality.

    • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 1:42 PM

Yes there are unlimited number of possibilities.

  • Chris Thompson  On December 13, 2013 at 9:28 AM

    Using Cones:
I am using vectors together with cone shape to model personality or thetan. With their circular base at present time, and their pinnacle at a beginning point in the past, and using vector arrows to point generally from pinnacle (past) to the base or any point on the base (present), we can model one vector of personality as one unit of an expanding sphere of considerations. This model can model attitudes, character, an entire thetan (personality), culture, race, species, etc., depending on the scope encompassed (frame of reference.) This model is consistent with Vinay’s “center of gravity” concepts of beingness as well.

I like the vector + cone model as a subset of spheres to describe the general progression of space-time. Thetan (personality) as a subset of this seems consistent,.

Career has the basic sense of a path on which one travels. A career should be harmonious with one’s skills.

Personally, I have been satisfied with my career as an engineer; but I enjoyed my career as a word clearer a lot more. It was much more satisfying. But engineering provided me with a lot of mass and with the knowledge of the importance of precision.

At this juncture of life I am combing the experience from these two careers into a career in the field of education. I would love to see a grass roots movement going in the field of education.

With the right career the progress is rapid because there is harmony with one’s skill set or individuality.

    From Tech Dictionary:

IDENTIFICATION, 1. the inability to evaluate differences in time, location, form, composition, or importance. ( SOS, p. 153) 2. identification is a monotone assignment of importance. (SOS, p. 153) 3 . the lowest level of reasoning is complete inability to differentiate, which is to say, identification. (SOS, p.153) 4 . Duplicating in one space continually, is in itself identification. (2ACC-25B, 5312CM17)

So one can’t tell the difference between two things, when they are actually different. One is not aware of the identification one is making. But the identification will generate a lot of inconsistencies, and the person can become aware of those.

I have observed people making identifications. This is a common error due to homonyms. One commonly identifies self with things that are desirable.

By following inconsistencies, one can discover identifications.

I have nothing more to comment on brain, body, cells, car, house, etc. except that problem areas to do with these words will come to mind.

If one is having general difficulty in handling problems, then one simply has to get organized. If one can’t get organized then there may be a deeper problem, which has nothing to do with these words. One may also look at one’s food intake and get oneself medically examined.

Not all physical problems can be handled through the mind. Physical means for resolving problems are just as important as the mental means. They simply has to be a proper balance between the two.

Chris: Better check with Mrs. Argawala before closing that out. (wink)

Some people may get great pleasure out of food preparation that parallels the pleasure that comes from sexual foreplay. It may have to do with harmones and pleasure centers in the brain.

Males usually go for sexual pleasure rather than for begetting a child. Women seems to go more for a feeling of security than for sexual pleasure. They get security and prolonged pleasure from begetting a child. These are just my conjectures.

Parts involved in the sexual act seems to get identified with sexual pleasure itself. Mystery seems to get attached to these parts because sexual pleasure appears to be mysterious. People in the throes of sexual pleasure become very different from their normal personality.

Desire for sexual pleasure seems to come from a deeper desire to know and understand. But the sexual pleasure does not lead one to knowledge and understanding.

Family is a totally different subject than the sexual act and the pleasure from it. Similarly, growing up is an entirely different subject. So, in this word list we have three different areas mixed together.

In this context, when He writes “duplication,” is he referring to propagation?

        • vinaire  On December 13, 2013 at 7:29 PM

I think so… something like continuation of the species through duplication of living units.

        Vin:
“Family is a totally different subject than the sexual act and the pleasure from it. Similarly, growing up is an entirely different subject. So, in this word list we have three different areaa mixed together.”
        Mark:
The sex act and family and children are not the same, BUT THEY ARE ATTACHED. Per an understanding of one aspect of intelligence: “The ability to detect differences, similarities, and identities.” They are not the same, and they are not different. I have not done L-10, but I have gone over hundreds of way back times that demonstrated their attachment.
Added to this is the desire to experience the oneness of theta, the basis of affinity, and the complexities of interaction and oneness, and you get a varied and rich subject. This aspect of the 2nd Dyn. is sorely missing from the assessment list you presented here.
There are many Cl.-12s in the Independent field who, from hearing 100s of individuals dive into this area whole track, could provide much data and help give a very good understanding of this subject.
The pleasure of sex and physical procreation is fairly late on the track and has as it’s basis the bliss of joining in near perfect ARC, AND the accomplishment of the separation of oneself through the creation of an additional viewpoint (individual). These experiences were MUCH earlier.
I have seen much of this and am on solid ground here.

Chris: Possibly you would work on additional pertinent words for this list? That would be a great contribution.

          Chris:
I’ll get back to you on that 2D word list. I’ll have to do more detailed research. I could make some up, but that could lead persons astray or worse. Also, the confusions and inconsistencies I find will mostly be the same as yours, some will be similar, and a few will be different. This is consistent with discussions I have had with others on whole track turning points. If you are comfortable doing solo assessments it will eliminate most problems. Some reads can be lost by using open lists instead of platens, but the important ones stay and real reads will become more pronounced as you resolve more inconsistencies and know what to look for. There have been several instances in which I realized I was wrong about something, and later thought, if i was wrong about that, maybe I was wrong about this also. Being familiar with YOUR OWN meter reactions will come with experience.

All subjects are related in some way. From my view of MSC, it is better to clear these words in three separate groups.

        • MarkNR  On December 13, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Vin: “All subjects are related in some way.”
Mark: Yes. These attachments are of particular importance. Not just random attachments This is an area and group of areas that has considerable confusion. It CAN be considerably smoothed out. Your methods of mindfulness and subject clearing can be of great value. Once the confusions are cleared, and ones own experiences are VIEWED, the differences and attachments will become clear.
Dive deep and you will have quite an adventure.
