Christianity Today

The following is my view on the Christianity of today.

Christianity is a wonderful religion only when it is practiced correctly.

Christianity of Dark Ages was a perversion. It was not real Christianity. Specious arguments were made that it was Christianity, but it was evil under the cloak of “Christianity”. Christianity is not just some mental system. It needs to be practiced in the real world.

It is called Christianity because a Christian is supposed to follow the example of Christ without hesitation.

If he is not following the example of Christ, then he has not really accepted Christ in his heart. He is still as sinful as he was before.

The heart of Christianity is expressed, as closely as Christ would have said it himself, in the Sermon on the Mount. If there is disagreement with it elsewhere in the Bible, then it is an inconsistency that needs to be sorted out.

Those who are trying to force Christianity on others should be judged in their understanding of Christianity by their actual behavior. Those who cannot practice Christianity have no right to preach it to others.

Again, I see true Christianity as a practical religion expressed in one’s practice of it, and not as a mental religion based on quotations from the Bible.

There is no need to deflect what I have said above by talking about other religions. I hold other religions also to the same high standard.

GRACE

In Theology, grace is defined as the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God. It is the influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them. It is a virtue or excellence of divine origin, such as, the Christian graces.

Grace is basically a manifestation of favor by God. It is a phenomenon that is beyond human effort. It cannot be brought about by mere human thinking and doing.

If we look at God as the principle that has continually brought order from chaos since the beginning of the universe, we may understand the concept of grace as follows.

Grace is the phenomenon of cosmic evolution.

Grace does not depend on a single human being. It depends on how the whole universe is evolving on a cosmic scale. It is this grace that has evolved energy into matter, matter into animation, animation into life, and life into the beauty of humanity. Now it is grace that is evolving human thinking into a higher level of the universal viewpoint.

(2) STAFF AUDITORS’ CONFERENCE OF FEBRUARY 16, 1959

Before starting a session, as you sit down, look around to know exactly where you are. Make sure you have a goal in your mind for that session. You start the session by looking at where your attention has been fixed lately. Then look for a problem in that “area of fixation”. This would be the PT (present time) problem. It should be something that is bothering you the most right now. If there are many things bothering you, then look at the broader situation you are concerned with right now.

.

PT PROBLEM

A problem exists because there is some conflict or confusion. There is something that doesn’t make sense. You need to find out about some details that are missing. This process provides an approach to find out what could be missing.

(1) You start with making a list of personnel associated with the problem. Since this is a PT problem these personnel must be existing at this time in your life influencing that problem. Make sure to include yourself on this list. It is always good to make the list on paper so you may refer to it as necessary. Do not make another list until you have first considered all the persons on this list per the following steps.

(2) Take up the persons on the list in the order your attention goes on to them. Meditate on the following two commands alternately:

“Think of something you have done to (selected person).”
“Think of something you have withheld from (selected person).”

(3) Run the commands alternately to keep the flow balanced. Flatten the first command and then the second command. Then back to the first command, and so on. You run them until the selected person chosen is somewhat flat. (The mind begins to repeat things it has recalled before.) Running these commands broadens your viewpoint so you get a deeper perspective on the problem.

(4) Do this with each person involved in the problem until you get a perspective that makes the resolution of the problem suddenly possible. The fixed attention on the problem disappears. It may happen that you exhaust the list and the fixed attention has not disappeared. In that case you may look for additional persons connected to the problem; but the more honest you are with yourself the more successful you’ll be in making the fixed attention disappear.

.

DYNAMIC STRAIGHT WIRE

This process is based on Hubbard’s process, but it is not the same. Its purpose is to straighten out the fixed attention you have on any of your dynamics. The dynamics are (1) Self, (2) Sex act, family, children, (3) Group, society, town, nation, (4) Mankind, (5) Animals, vegetables, all life, (6) The physical universe of matter, energy, space and time, (7) The spiritual universe of spirits, souls and gods, (8) The infinite universe. See OT 1948: The Dynamics.

(1) You start by making a list of things and people on each dynamic that you have fixed attention on. If the attention is fixed on the whole dynamic, then list whatever represents that dynamic to you.

(2) Take up the items on the list in the order your attention goes on to them. Meditate on the following two commands alternately:

“Think of something you have done to (selected item).”
“Think of something you have withheld from (selected item).”

(3) Run the commands alternately until the selected item is flat. You recover all possible data that is hidden from you because of any shock, apprehension, fear, etc.

(4) Do this with each item on the list until the fixed attention on the dynamics has disappeared.

.

PAST AND FUTURE EXPERIENCE

On this process you simply run something about experience. It will be very interesting to see how you get along with this process. The commands of this process are:

“What part of your life would you be willing to re-experience?”
“What part of the future would you be willing to experience?”

You may go deep in meditating alternately over these two questions. This process actually runs out time, even when you get lot of significances. The longer you run it, the more past and future you’re going to cover. All kind of odd phenomena show up.

If something difficult comes up that you tend to stick in, simply do the following:

(1) Spot when that phenomena first occurred in your experience.

(2) Experience whatever phenomenon is coming through. Sometimes it may go on for some time. Do not resist it or suppress it. Just make sure you have spotted the time of the first occurrence of that phenomenon correctly.

(3) Do not try to get any more details on the memory or impression of that phenomenon. Simply move on to the next thing.

.

Summary

These three processes should be done in the sequence given above. They are quite powerful processes. They are very effective when done through the mindfulness approach.

VIEWPOINT & OBJECTIVITY

Most people misunderstand the word VIEWPOINT. They give it a mathematical definition by quibbling about the meaning of “view” and “point”. The fact is that if you are aware at all you have a “view”. Awareness is not limited to visual perception alone, so the “view” in viewpoint refers to perception through all five physical senses, and also through the mental sense.

The “point” in viewpoint refers to a particular value on the scale of awareness. This is similar to a point on the temperature scale, which specifies a particular temperature. Therefore, a viewpoint refers to a particular state or level of awareness. Different viewpoints have different interpretations of what is actually there. The viewpoint goes deep into subjectivity when it is speculating. But it rises up into objectivity when it is viewing things as they are.

In the context of viewpoint, the word OBJECTIVITY is used in the sense of “seeing things as they are,” and not merely in the sense of “external reality.” Whether the reality is external or internal, it is objective if it is “appreciated for what it is” because there are no filters. Objectivity reduces to subjectivity to the degree a person is using filters (fixed ideas, prejudices and beliefs) to look at things.

Whether it is a tree or a forest, you must perceive it objectively first before you can consider or analyze it. In computer lingo, you say, “garbage in = garbage out”. In other words, if your data is faulty, then your conclusions are going to be faulty too. Objectivity means correctness of input, whether it is external or internal, top-down or bottom-up.

In a precise sense, a view is objective to the degree there are no unresolved anomalies (inconsistencies, disharmonies and discontinuities) in it. This depends on the context in which one is viewing, because, as the context broadens, more anomalies may become visible. The most objective view, therefore, has no anomalies in the universal context.

To summarize, a viewpoint is the very expression of our beingness at any moment. It lies on a scale of awareness that varies from deep subjectivity to complete objectivity.

Our viewpoint provides us with perspectives on situations that concern us.

DUALISM AND NON-DUALISM

Dualism and non-dualism can both be fixations in their own turn. Dualism is a fixation on dualities like Good-Evil, Right-Wrong, True-False, I am-I am not, etc. Non-dualism fixates on some kind of oneness in a quantitative sense.

My understanding is that duality is never black and white as it is treated by non-dualism. Duality is a reference to the two ends of a gradient scale that extends to infinity at both ends.

When we look at the duality of HOT-COLD, it is best viewed as a temperature scale which refers to temperature changing in infinitesimal gradients. At one end of this scale the temperature may be viewed as gradually getting hotter. At the other end of the same scale the temperature may be viewed as gradually getting cooler.

The mathematical duality is infinite-zero applied to something-nothing. Infinity is not a number but it represents a continuous increase in very large quantities. Similarly, zero is not a number but it represents a continuous decrease in very small quantities. On this mathematical scale of numbers, the integers may appear to be discrete, but between two integers we have fractions, and between two fractions we have irrational numbers. So, the mathematical scale of numbers is really a continuum without any gaps even at the infinitesimal level.

Any duality like Good-Evil, Right-Wrong, True-False, I am-I am not, in reality, is a continuum of infinitesimally varying values with no gaps in between anywhere. There is nothing wrong with the ideas of duality and non-duality, but fixations on duality and non-duality, alike, are the result of subjective and narrow viewpoints.

So in reality there is a single scale with two ends that extend to infinity on either side. This realization settles the confusion between dualism and non-dualism.

In Christianity, the Church and many Christians have fixation on the duality of CREATOR-CREATION. This is expressed more concretely in their view of God and the world.

In New Age religions and among many Hindus there is fixation on non-dualism of “SAT-CHIT-ANAND (TRUTH-CONSCIOUSNESS-BLISS)”. This is an abstraction, which is expressed as this world being a dream state (illusion).

Out of these fixations on Dualism and Non-dualism come inconsistencies such as the following:

(1) CHRISTIANITY – “We are saved not by perfect works, but by belief in Jesus.” This makes everything mental and subjective. There is no balance between subjective thinking and objective doingness.

(2) HINDUISM – Brahma (ultimate reality) is a singularity and the only awake state. Everything else is a “dream state” (illusion). There is no balance between subjective and objective viewpoints.

(3) PHILOSOPHY – Everything is subjective. You can never be objective. This is another way of stating the above black and white thinking.

These inconsistencies have affected the education of many. The common denominator of these inconsistencies is black and white thinking.
