In Theology, grace is defined as the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God. It is the influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them. It is a virtue or excellence of divine origin, such as, the Christian graces.

Grace is basically a manifestation of favor by God. It is a phenomenon that is beyond human effort. It cannot be brought about by mere human thinking and doing.

If we look at God as the principle that has continually brought order from chaos since the beginning of the universe, we may understand the concept of grace as follows.

Grace is the phenomenon of cosmic evolution.

Grace does not depend on a single human being. It depends on how the whole universe is evolving on a cosmic scale. It is this grace that has evolved energy into matter, matter into animation, animation into life, and life into the beauty of humanity. Now it is grace that is evolving human thinking into a higher level of the universal viewpoint.

Fred Pickhardt wrote, “Some insight on the ancient Hebrew word translated as grace:”

    Here is my response:

Fred, the reference you provided basically says,

The Hebrew word for ‘grace’ has two parent roots. One conveys the meaning of a “wall that continues”, and the other conveys the sense of “healing, help, being lifted up, finding refuge, strength and salvation (literally rescue)”. Together, the two parental roots convey the sense of “providing protection” as in a camp.

Hence the Hebrew word for ‘grace’ is related to its parental roots in the sense–“the camp which protects is a beautiful and precious place”. Thus, God is compared to this camp that provides the much needed and precious protection.

In other words, grace is related to the feeling that one is anchored in this tumultuous world through trust, or faith, in God.

Without this grace one cannot overcome the tumult (highly distressing agitation of mind or feeling) aroused by the very nature of this world.

In my opinion that “overcoming of tumult” is the cosmic evolution for humans.
