The Auditor’s Role

KEY WORDS: Auditor, Auditing, Preclear, Facsimile

The purpose of therapy and its sole target is the unassimilated impressions, or facsimiles. This is approached by addressing conflicting efforts and the emotions and thoughts underlying them. This chapter is about the role of an auditor who addresses the facsimiles in a preclear. Since in Subject Clearing you are auditing yourself, it is your technical precision that we shall be looking at. The primary guiding principle is:

To the extent you are encountering resistance to clearing from your mind you are not on the right track.

Hubbard believed that a person cannot see his own aberrations. The truth is that you know better than anybody else what you want to get handled. When you understand the mechanics of the mind you can also audit yourself better than another person. When running the auditing process on yourself, you are intimately in touch with yourself. You are in a better position to differentiate between a fleeting somatic of engram and an actual pain that requires medical attention.

In early Dianetics application, the auditor often pushed the preclear into supposed facsimiles, which then could not be run. It then required a lot more work to pull the preclear back out from that situation. This is much less likely to happen when you are auditing yourself. You will know better than any other auditor the right gradient that you need to apply. You can then confidently face and run the engram without worrying if it is imaginary. Here is another guiding principle:

If you are having difficulty reaching and running an engram then you are not using the right gradient of clearing.

Hubbard advises that the only way to handle an engram is to keep attacking it. It is true that one should not avoid, deny, resist or suppress anything that comes up during clearing. One should simply be there and confront it calmly. Engrams are heavy facsimiles. To find the engram one guesses at its content in terms of pain or another sensation, and looks for the earliest moment of it. Many times it is necessary to run lighter facsimiles in preparation for running heavy facsimiles. A practical rule is,

Run the facsimile that the mind is offering to you. If you keep doing so, you may soon find yourself running the engram.

One must be technically proficient. Let the sensations, emotions and computations play themselves out just as they come up. You experience them fully when you are not resisting or interfering with them. See Running Scientology Processes with Subject Clearing.

Hubbard talks about the AUDITOR’S CODE. It specifies the professionalism with which the auditor should treat his preclear. In Subject Clearing, it translates into how you should treat yourself in a session. It sums up to applying the techniques of auditing professionally with precision and care.

Most difficulties in Dianetics arise from one person auditing another. Majority of these difficulties are eliminated when a person audits himself as in Subject Clearing. Running an engram can be difficult if you do not follow a gradient approach. Follow the gradient approach of confronting whatever comes up. You may even go unconscious (go to sleep) during your contemplation. Let it happen. You will wake up when the unconsciousness has run itself out. You will always come out better at the other end.

The safest route for clearing is to follow the natural gradient, and never push yourself, when running facsimiles.

Subject: Human Condition (old)

Reference: Course on Subject Clearing

This step looks at the human condition through Scientology, which calls itself a science of mind. The bulk of the problems with the human condition are addressed on Grade 4 of Scientology. This grade is called “Ability Release,” and it helps a person move out of fixed conditions and gain abilities to do new things.

NOTE: The material provided below may remind one of Scientology, but it differs in most respects from standard Scientology. This material is used by a person to subject clear his or her human condition by oneself. The person is not being audited as in Scientology.

The three most important tasks for any science of mind are:

  1. Get the person to be there extroverted in present time.
  2. Get the person to think beyond black and white in shades of gray.
  3. Get the person to assimilate all his sensations and operate with an assimilated mental matrix.

The unassimilated impressions may be called facsimiles because they are literal copies of the sensations received during a trauma. The facsimiles are unknown to the person since they are not assimilated in the mental matrix. These facsimiles insert themselves into the activity of the mental matrix adding their literal interpretations to its computations. Downstream, the corrupted mental computations generate aberrated behavior and psychosomatic illnesses. The handling of aberrations and psychosomatic illnesses requires the assimilation of the facsimiles into the mental matrix. Once their content is assimilated, the facsimiles disappear.

The above is a succinct summary of the mind that further improves upon the Hubbard’s theory of the Reactive mind.

There are heavy, medium and light facsimiles. The heavy facsimiles require the running of sharp efforts, such as those involved in shocks and impacts. These efforts are run only to the point that the emotions are reached. The heavy facsimiles are referred to as engrams in Scientology.

In the medium facsimiles, the emotions are accessible directly. These emotions reflect the degree of conflicted effort in the trauma.  Emotions of apathy, grief, fear, anger, antagonism and boredom, represent the declining degree of conflicted effort. Emotions are run until the underlying thoughts are reached. The medium facsimiles are referred to as secondaries in Scientology.

In the light facsimiles, thoughts are accessible directly. These thoughts are in confusion and full of anomalies. A person contemplates and meditates on the anomalies to resolve them. When one discovers the arbitrary postulate underlying an anomaly, the conflicts resolve and the facsimile assimilates. One feels relieved and happy. The light facsimiles are referred to as locks in Scientology.

In dealing with facsimiles, one is dealing with heavily compressed thoughts, emotions and sensations that need to be decompressed.

These facsimiles seem to reside in the electromagnetic field within and around the body. This field primarily contains the mental matrix whose characteristics are continuity, consistency and harmony. The facsimiles exist in this field as discontinuities, inconsistencies and disharmonies.

As these old facsimiles are assimilated in the mental matrix the tasks listed above for the science of mind become easier to accomplish.

GLOSSARY

FACSIMILE
Facsimile is a mental impression that is too jumbled up to be assimilated in the mental matrix. Therefore, it is not available as perception and/or experience. But it exerts a hidden “literal” influence on the functioning of mental matrix. Upon assimilation, the impression reduces to thoughts, emotions and efforts that can be managed.

SERVICE FACSIMILE
This facsimile provides a hidden influence that the person finds useful.  It helps the person use his weakness and disability to his advantage. It provides him with justifications that he can use to escape responsibility. He may use the facsimile to invite sympathy or cooperation from others, for example, by playing as a victim. It makes him right and others wrong. But he is using a fixed method to do so, and that provides the clue to the service facsimile.

COMPUTATION
The assimilated data of the mental matrix provides natural thinking that is harmonious, continuous and consistent. But the data from the facsimile, when inserted, generates thinking that has become corrupted. The mental matrix has the awareness of something being wrong but it cannot resolve it because it does not have the content of the facsimile available. The corrupted thinking expresses itself in aberrated behaviors and illnesses. The computations of such corrupted thinking appear as fixations.

JUSTIFICATION
When the mental matrix cannot resolve the corruption of thinking that is inserted by the hidden facsimiles, it does its best to come up with the most plausible explanation for the resulting aberrated behaviors and illnesses. Such explanation seems perfectly right to the person making it, but to others it may appear as a justification for the most flagrant wrongness. The person using justification comes across as making himself right and others wrong.

OVERT ACT
The overt act is part of the aberrated behavior resulting from aberrated thinking. Being irrational an overt act is injurious or harmful in nature, but it appears totally justified to the person committing it.  The person may not know the actual reason why he acted that way. The circumstances may make him feel that he should not have acted that way, at least openly. And so, he may try to restrain himself. This builds up a pressure in him. When a person can clearly see the outpoints in his overt act and confesses to them then he may feel some relief.

WITHHOLD
A withhold is a lack of confession. Confession is a limited effort to relieve a person of the pressure of his overt acts. It is limited because full acceptance of responsibility can come only from uncovering the hidden facsimile.

MOTIVATOR
A motivator is what justifies to the person the “rightness” of his overt act. It makes him feel that he was justified to have acted the way he did. The motivator could be something that unknowingly triggered his hidden facsimile to influence his computation.

RIGHTNESS & WRONGNESS
The over act appears right to the person committing it because it is the best option per his “thinking”. He doesn’t know that his thinking is influenced by the facsimile. Others are under no such influence so they see his overt act as being harmful and injurious.

CERTAINTY
A person can only be as certain of his solution as the data available to him. So, he can be certain that his “aberrated action” is the right solution. However, certainty improves as more data becomes available. So, the person can be given data that makes him realize that his “aberrated behavior” is injurious to others. But this may not always work. So, he may have to be assisted in processing his facsimiles.

FIXED SOLUTION
Since it is the same facsimile that is injecting itself into the computations of the mental matrix, it may lead to the same “aberrated solution” time and time again. This may provide a clue to the nature of the facsimile and to the incident that may have caused it.

CERTAINTY PROCESSING
A person who is uncertain is oscillating between two opposite certainties. He is thinking in black and white terms. We resolve this uncertainty by having him consider the opposite certainties one at a time, until he can see that there can be shades of gray.

CAUSE LEVEL
Cause level is a person’s ability to see outpoints, even in his own actions. He can then understand better the influence of the unknown facsimile.

RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibility comes about when one really understands the actual situation, and the plus points and outpoints in it. This allows him to responsibly assume control over it.

Some Grade 4 Processes

The following are some Grade 4 processes of Scientology.

As you work through these processes, you shall uncover anomalies in your past and present, and also in your thinking. Make sure you continue the process until all anomalies brought to your notice during that process are resolved.

  1. Follow the reference Running a Process Command.
  2. You may also use “another” and “others” in place of “you” in the following commands.

.

Process: MUST & MUST NOT HAPPEN
“Tell me some things you wouldn’t want to have happen again.”
“Tell me some things you would like to have happen again.”

Process: OVERT ACTS
“In this lifetime what have you done?”
“What haven’t you done?”

Process: JUSTIFICATION
“In this lifetime what overt have you committed?“
“How have you justified it? “

More processes are provided under the Reading Materials section above.

Light “Waves” or Energy Consistency?

Planck’s quantum of action ‘h’ shows that radiative energy is proportional to “frequency”. In case of a wave, which is a disturbance in a medium, the energy is proportional to the square of amplitude. Therefore, the electromagnetic energy cannot be a disturbance in a material medium. The frequency of energy is not a rate of disturbance; instead, it is the rate of transitions between electrical and magnetic fields. Since the speed of electromagnetic radiation is constant, its frequency is, probably, better interpreted as its consistency.

The “wave nature” of electromagnetic radiation is very different from that of a wave in water or air. An energy or light wave is neither transversal nor longitudinal.

Newton’s corpuscles and Planck-Einstein quanta are correct in the sense that light is not a disturbance in some medium, but it is something physical.

However, these corpuscles/quanta are not discrete “particles” in space; instead, they represent the consistency of energy.

Quantum doesn’t really break the sense of continuity of variables of the classical mechanics when frequency is interpreted as consistency. It does change the consideration of Maxwell’s theory, which assumes the consistency of electromagnetic energy to be constant.

Maxwell’s theory assumes the consistency of electromagnetic energy to be constant.

As consistency gets thicker there are sudden transitions possible from thinner to thicker consistency. This may give an illusion of discontinuity, but that is simply a sharp gradient.

The boundary between matter and void is not a discontinuity, but an extreme gradient in the consistency of energy.

Release or Clear

KEY WORDS: Release, Clear

Dianetics lays down the milestones of “release” and “clear,” but these are quite general. Actually, a person improves on a gradient. His unwanted conditions get handled as he improves. The improvement continues beyond any “milestones.” In fact, there is no limit to improvement.

The improvement occurs in terms of clearing a person’s upsets, pain, psychosomatic illnesses, fixed ideas, aberrations, and general ignorance.

Hubbard insists that a clear has complete recall of everything which has ever happened to him or anything he has ever studied. It is not quite that simple. The memory is not a recording of perceptions that get stored in the mind. The sensations from environment simply get assimilated in a mental matrix in real time and become perceptions. Memories are reconstructed from the perceptual elements of the mental matrix on ad hoc basis. The better assimilated are the perceptual elements the more precise is the reconstruction of memory.

There is no ready made storage  of memories in the mind. Actual memories are ad hoc reconstruction from perceptual elements in the mental matrix.

The sensations of traumatic experience never got assimilated, and therefore, they never became perceptions in the first place. Traumatic sensations remain in the mind as unassimilated impressions. There is no memory of them. The whole idea of clearing is assimilating such sensations when one does not even know what they are. This is tricky. It is only upon their assimilation that one becomes aware of what happened.

Clearing is the process of assimilating unknown sensations of traumatic experiences. It results in the improvement of personal condition.

Dianetics “clear” is an idealized state imagined for an individual. It has never been realized in Dianetics or Scientology. Dianetics “release” is a state of release from an unwanted condition. It is an improved personal condition.

The goal of clearing is to fully assimilate the mental matrix, such that no unassimilated impressions are left.

That is why it is very important to clear up all your schooling and earlier education. The bottom line is Subject Clearing. In the process of subject clearing all unwanted conditions are cleared too.

The Mind’s Protection

KEY WORDS: Contemplation, Discipline of Subject Clearing

It has been known for centuries that when one is in a secure environment and does not interfere with the mind, then the mind takes care of itself by gently unwinding its stress. That is why meditation has been successful over the centuries.

The mind is a self-protecting mechanism as long as it is not interfered with. Many of older practices of psychiatry and hypnotism have been injurious to the mind when they have heavily interfered with it. Basically this chapter is saying that Dianetics is safe to apply because it is designed not to interfere with the mind. But it does not mean that Dianetics cannot be injurious when it is misapplied.

Dianetics cautions one against the use of drugs and hypnotism. It also has a theory that provides one with a better understanding of the mind. However, Dianetics is much safer when its principles are applied by oneself in meditation, rather than getting audited by another. The recommended approach is Subject Clearing.

The goal of Dianetics is to assimilate the unknown sensations from the traumas in one’s life.

These sensations are unknown because they do not become perceptions until they are assimilated. Therefore, it requires certain skill to sort out these sensations while still in the dark. A person can safely apply the meditative and contemplative approach of subject clearing in using the Dianetic technique to heal oneself.

The comments in the subsequent chapters examines the Dianetics techniques for their use by oneself through the subject clearing approach.
