The Definition of POSTULATE (old)

Please see Postulate Mechanics: The Basics

Scientology provides the following definitions for POSTULATE.

.

Scientology Technical Dictionary

“POSTULATE, n. 1. a self-created truth would be simply the consideration generated by self. Well, we just borrow the word which is in seldom use in the English language, we call that postulate. And we mean by postulate, self-created truth. He posts something. He puts something up and that’s what a postulate is.”

A postulate, such as, “the speed of light is a universal constant” by Einstein, is simply put there to explain a phenomenon. It is treated as self-evident as long as it does not conflict with what is observed.

“POSTULATE, n. 2. a postulate is, of course, that thing which is a directed desire or order, or inhibition, or enforcement, on the part of the individual in the form of an idea.

A postulate is continuous, consistent and harmonious with other observations. It is not something arbitrary, whether a directed desire or an idea.

“POSTULATE, n. 3 . that self-determined thought which starts, stops or changes past, present or future efforts.”

The purpose of postulate is to know the unknowable. Self is the ability to postulate and to become aware. Self is not some identity or individuality.

“POSTULATE, n. 4 . is actually a prediction.”

A postulate provides the basis for further reasoning.

“POSTULATE, v. 1 . in Scn the word postulate means to cause a thinkingness or consideration. It is a specially applied word and is defined as causative thinkingness.”

To postulate is to put something up that explains a whole lot of observations.

“POSTULATE, v. 2 . to conclude, decide or resolve a problem or to set a pattern for the future or to nullify a pattern of the past.”

To postulate is to provide stable data that resolves problems or anomalies.

“POSTULATE, v. 3 . to generate or “thunk” a concept. A postulate infers conditions and actions rather than just plain thinks. It has a dynamic connotation.”

To postulate is to conceive a basic concept that explains a whole lot of conditions and actions.

.

Subject Clearing

A postulate explains a whole lot of observed phenomena. Therefore, there has to be a set of postulates that explains the knowable universe.

The particle of thought may be called a postulate. A postulate is something, which is put forth with or without reasoning. Its source is unknowable. A postulate is manifested and knowable. It has substance, extents and duration. Postulates may be arranged in a “spectrum” of increasing condensation of thought. The thought in the state of apathy is much more condensed than the thought in the state of serenity. We have an approximation of this “spectrum” in the Tone Scale of Scientology by Hubbard. The size of a postulate is estimated to be trillions of times the size of a photon. Postulates account for all space. This is an area where much research is needed.

The Definition of THETAN

Reference: Subject: Scientology Fundamentals

Scientology provides the following definitions for THETAN.

.

Scientology Technical Dictionary

“THETAN, 1. the living unit we call, in Scn, a thetan, that being taken from the Greek letter theta, the mathematic symbol used in Scn to indicate the source of life and life itself.”

The source of life is theta, and a thetan is the phenomenon of human beingness and individuality. There must be postulates that explain the phenomenon of thetan.

“THETAN, 2. the awareness of awareness unit which has all potentialities but no mass, no wave-length and no location.”

The theta part of the thetan can become aware of the postulates that underlie the phenomenon of thetan itself.

“THETAN, 3. the being who is the individual and who handles and lives in the body.”

Underlying thetan is the postulate of individuality energized by theta. This postulate applies to the whole programming that expresses the blueprint of the body and the mind. Body is generated by the lower end of this programming, whereas, the mind is formed by the upper end of the programming.

“THETAN, 4. (spirit) is described in Scn as having no mass, no wave-length, no energy and no time or location in space except by consideration or postulate. The spirit is not a thing. It is the creator of things.”

The thetan is theta plus certain postulates. Theta is the potentiality of the ability to postulate and become aware. The actuality of postulates and considerations then give substance to the thetan.

“THETAN, 5. the personality and beingness which actually is the individual and is aware of being aware and is ordinarily and normally the “person” and who the individual thinks he is. The thetan is immortal and is possessed of capabilities well in excess of those hitherto predicted for man.”

A person has a personality that is entirely individual. Underlying this personality (beingness) are postulates energized by theta. The person can become aware of these postulates, or his essential beingness as a thetan. His capabilities as thetan are determined by the postulates, and they are more than what is generally known. His theta aspect is an immortal potentiality; but the postulates are put there and can be removed.

“THETAN, 6. the name given to the life source. It is the individual, the being, the personality, the knowingness of the human being.”

Scientology does not clearly differentiate between theta (ability to postulate) and thetan (the postulate of individual beingness). The potential of knowingness lies in theta. The actual knowingness comes from postulates.

“THETAN, 7. energy-space production unit.”

The capability of production applies more to theta. What it produces applies more to postulates.

“THETAN, 8. in the final analysis what is this thing called thetan? It is simply you before you mocked yourself up and that is the handiest definition I know of.”

The postulate that mocks up the thetan is the postulate of individuality defined by a definite goal and behavior characteristics.

“THETAN, 9. the person himself—not his body or his name, the physical universe, his mind, or anything else; that which is aware of being aware; the identity which is the individual. The thetan is most familiar to one and all as you.”

As described above, thetan comes about with the postulate of individuality.

“THETAN, 10. a static that can consider, and can produce space and energy and objects.”

The static is the Unknowable. It is symbolized by the theta (which specifies the ability to postulate). It postulates an individuality, which brings about the thetan. The process of postulating also produces substance, along with space, and time.

.

Subject Clearing

Thetan is essentially the postulate of individual beingness, which is energized by theta. This individuality is defined by definite goals and behavior characteristics. The programming of the thetan consists of the blueprint that produces the body and the mind. Body is generated by the lower end of this programming, whereas, the conscious mind is formed by the upper end of the programming. The immortality of thetan is limited to theta only because the individuality is perishable. In short, the thetan is a sophisticated system where the theta part makes the thetan aware of being aware and enables it to observe and postulate and resolve anomalies.

Scientology fails to differentiate between theta (unknowable with the ability to postulate) and the actual postulates that comprise the individual beingness. Therefore, it identifies theta with the individuality and considers individuality to be immortal. This identification generates much disharmony as it ignores the Principle of Oneness.

The Definition of THETA

Reference: Subject: Scientology Fundamentals

Scientology provides the following definitions for THETA.

.

Scientology Technical Dictionary

“THETA, 1. theta is thought, life force, elan vital, the spirit, the soul, or any other of the numerous definitions it has had for some thousands of years.”

Theta is the that which underlies all life and existence.

“THETA, 2. the life force, life energy, divine energy, elan vital, or by any other name, the energy peculiar to life which acts upon material in the physical universe and animates it, mobilizes it and changes it. It is susceptible to alteration in character or vibration, at which time it becomes enturbulated theta or entheta.”

Theta is the pure ability to postulate. Postulates describe the MEST universe and all its activities. As postulates get enturbulated, they make the MEST universe appear enturbulated.

“THETA, 3. theta is thought; an energy of its own universe analogous to energy in the physical universe but only occasionally paralleling electromagnetic-gravitic laws. The three primary components of theta are affinity, reality, and communication.”

The definition of theta (ability to postulate) is extended here to include the substance of postulates it creates. We may call this substance thought energy.

“THETA, 4. reason, serenity, stability, happiness, cheerful emotion, persistence, and the other factors which man ordinarily considers desirable.”

Here theta is being associated with positive factors that are considered desirable by man.

“THETA, 5. an energy existing separate and distinct from the physical universe.”

Theta is thought energy, which is separate and distinct from MEST energy.

“THETA, 6. Greek for thought or life or the spirit.”

See the comments above.

“THETA, 7. not a nothingness. It just happens to be an exterior thing to this universe—so you couldn’t talk about it in this universe’s terms.”

Hubbard limits the definition of the universe to the its physical aspects only. Therefore, he does not consider thought to be part of his concept of the universe.

.

Subject Clearing

In Scientology, theta is used as a mathematical symbol for the Static. This makes theta the pure ability to postulate and control MEST. Theta represents all positive factors that are considered desirable by man. But, theta can become enturbulated and turn into negative factors. It is an anomaly for theta to become an effect of its own postulates. This anomaly is resolved by the Principle of Oneness. See The Definition of STATIC.

.

The Principle of Oneness

Oneness does not imply sameness. Oneness means that all that is known is continuous, consistent and harmonious. There are dimensions in Oneness, where continuity exists. There are realities in Oneness, where consistency exists. There are relations in Oneness, where harmony exists. This Principle of Oneness underlies the very concept of the universe. It also underlies the Scientific method. This principle gives us the ideal scene for logic, and its violation gives us anomalies.

Substance, Motion and Static

Reference: Subject: Scientology Fundamentals

Motion occurs in a substance. There is no motion in the absence of substance.

Substance is anything substantial enough to be perceived. The two dimensions of substance are spiritual (theta) and physical (MEST). The absence of substance means—void.

Examples of motion in the physical dimension are: motion of the planets, motion of light, motion of electrons, etc. Examples of motion in the spiritual dimension are: thoughts racing in the mind, learning of subjects, evolution, etc.

.

Motion in Physical Dimension

No physical object is absolutely still. Nor the atoms that make up the objects are absolutely still. The pressure of air, the temperature of solid objects, and the Brownian motion—all provide evidence for the motion of atoms.

Looking deeper, we find that there is motion within an atom too. The electronic region naturally swirls rapidly around the nucleus like a whirlpool. This is because the electronic region is much less dense than the nucleus. It is clearly observable that, as matter de-condenses into energy, its motion increases. The velocity of light is 3 x 1010 times the average velocity of matter (in cm/sec) because the consistency of light is that much less than the average density of matter. Einstein postulated this ratio to be the universal constant ‘c’.

Essentially, motion is tied to the consistency (degree of thickness, firmness, viscosity, etc.) of substance. The greater is the consistency of substance, the slower it moves. Matter gets much more condensed in neutron stars and black holes, where it becomes increasingly static. Probably, black holes are the most static objects in the universe. No wonder we find black holes at the center of the galaxies.

Motion is an inherent characteristic of physical substance just like consistency. Motion is not independent of the physical substance.

.

Motion in Spiritual Dimension

The mind is usually filled with chaotic thoughts. Many try to still the mind. People also change their mind about what they have to do, what they like or dislike, etc. Some may not look at these things as motion because it is a very different type of change.

.

Hubbard’s Static

In the philosophy of Scientology, Hubbard says,

“Scientology is essentially a study of statics and kinetics. If anything, it is more exact than what are called the physical sciences, for it is dealing with a theoretical static and a theoretical kinetic which are at the opposite ends of a spectrum of all motion.”

Hubbard, then, goes on to say,

“Formerly a static was defined only as a motionless object which definition is not adequate, since an object—or a state of rest for an object—is attained only by an equilibrium of forces and all objects have in themselves, if only on a molecular level, motion, and exist in space which is itself an integral portion of motion. Hence, we see we are dealing with a higher-level static.”

Hubbard then says,

“One of the most valuable contributions of Scientology to knowledge is the definition of a true static. A static has no motion; it has no width, length, breadth, depth; it is not held in suspension by an equilibrium of forces; it does not have mass; it does not contain wavelengths; it has no situation in time or space.”

An analysis of Hubbard’s definitions of STATIC tells us,

“Static implies that Theta (spiritual) and MEST (physical) are different dimensions. Theta is the potential, which itself  is static, until it is manifested in MEST and produces motion.”

Hubbard is, essentially, assigning the potential of motion to spiritual realm and calling it “Static.” Can we separate potential of motion from motion? We can, as in the case of a compressed spring, but that is not moving into the spiritual dimension.

Hubbard uses his hypothesis to explain death and out of body experiences. But that seems to be unnecessary per the analysis provided in this document on Scientology Axiom # 1.

An alternative concept provided in The Static Viewpoint seems to be more consistent with reality.

Grade 4 Processes

Right, left, right, wrong Painting by Paul Klonowski | Saatchi Art

Reference: Grassroots Scientology

NOTE: These processes are obtained from Hubbard’s research in Dianetics and Scientology. For any technical words specific to this research, please consult the Scientology Technical Dictionary.

Grade 4 processes follow Grade 3 ProcessesThe person’s confront is now high enough to handle some of the fixations he could not handle earlier.

Grade 4 focuses on moving out of fixed conditions and gaining abilities to do new things. The Grade 4 processes zero in on the person’s fixations still remaining and bring them up to awareness with the help of Listing and Nulling. Freeing the person up from his fixations brings a big change in his life.

For example, the process, “In this lifetime what do you use to make others wrong?”, help the person zero down to an item. The person then contemplates on this item with the help of the subsequent commands for this process. The person now has a high enough confront to realize his fixation and get rid of it.

In general, the person runs these processes with Subject Clearing approach. In this approach, neither an auditor nor an E-meter is required. The person simply contemplates over the process command using the Subject Clearing discipline (see The Book of Subject Clearing).

The EP (end phenomena) of any process is simply a sense of having made some progress. With Subject Clearing approach the person may run a process again if he feels that he can gain more from it. But, if the person already has the awareness that a process provides, he need not run that process.

.

Listing & Nulling

The person applies the Listing & Nulling process as described under Grade 3 Processes. If he finds “his item” then he uses it on the subsequent commands of the Grade 4 process.

If he does not find a definite item, then he runs the items from the list, starting from the top, through the Grade 4 process commands. He does that until he recognizes his fixation and lets go of it.

.

Instructions

  1. These processes are run by oneself applying The 12 Aspects of Mindfulness instead of depending on the E-meter.
  2. In response to the commands of these processes, simply look without thinking. Let the mind present you with the answer. If no answer comes up within a reasonable time, you have reached the EP (end phenomenon) for the moment.
  3. These commands tend to be general. The better you understand the command and its scope, the more answers shall come up.
  4. The answers that come up, shall depend on the level of your confront. The higher is your confront the deeper shall be the answers that come up. Your confront improves as you do the processing. After completing a grade, if you repeat it again, you may find some new answers coming up.
  5. “Repetitive to EP” means you contemplate over the command and acknowledge each answer, until no more answers are coming up.
  6. “Run alternately to EP” means that you contemplate over the two commands alternatively, until no more answers are coming up.
  7. “Run the bracket in sequence to EP” means that you sequentially contemplate on the commands provided as a bracket, until no more answers are coming up.
  8. “To EP” is the abbreviation for the above. When there is a single command you run it repetitively. When there are more than one command, you run them as a group, repetitively.

.
