The Axioms 1 – 10

Reference: The Axioms

In the Scientology Axioms, written by L. Ron Hubbard in 1954, we have a condensation and a recapitulation of all the earlier Axioms and Logics, boiled down to a more practical, more fundamental and more forthright list. They compare best, perhaps, to the axioms of geometry; they are certainly as self–evident as that. But the axioms of geometry are really much cruder than the Scientology Axioms, since geometry proves itself by itself and the Axioms of Scientology prove themselves by all of life.

This paper presents Scientology Axioms 1 – 10 and the corresponding KHTK versions.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 1: Life is basically a static.

Definition: a Life Static has no mass, no motion, no wavelength, no location in space or in time. It has the ability to postulate and to perceive.

Static implies that Theta and MEST are substances in two different dimensions. Theta is the potential that becomes actual only when manifested in MEST. This manifestation results in motion which is life. In Hubbard’s Theta-MEST theory, theta may separate from MEST and survive as pure potential.

Hubbard postulated the Theta-MEST theory to explain the phenomena of Death. Most of the conscious life leaves the body at the moment of death. So, Hubbard postulated a unit of theta (thetan) leaving the body at death. But life in the organs of the body takes another 14 days to leave completely. So Hubbard postulated a Genetic Entity to explain that. But even when the body disintegrates completely, some motion still remains at the atomic level. This presents an anomaly because if theta leaves the MEST, then no motion should be left at all in MEST.

We find that motion is inherent to MEST at the atomic level and it can never be separated. Motion becomes more sophisticated as MEST becomes more complex at the molecular level. As molecules increase in complexity they act like computers. A DNA molecule is so complex that it can store the whole blue print of the body within itself. The sophisticated motion at the level of the body expresses itself as thought. Throughout this increasing complexity of MEST, the increasingly sophisticated motion cannot be separated from MEST.

So, at the moment of death, most of the sophisticated motion of life ceases, because the overall system of the body breaks down. The remaining motion of the body ceases over the next 14 days as body’s sub-systems break down one by one. Subsequently, any sophisticated motion goes dormant in the DNA molecules. So, we can explain death in terms of an integrated Theta-MEST system gradually breaking down and becoming dormant, instead of “theta leaving MEST.” This is more consistent.

Lets’ look at the phenomenon of exteriorization where, in Hubbard’s model, the thetan leaves the body, and the genetic entity is left in the body to maintain its functions. We may explain the phenomenon of exteriorization in terms of shift in consideration. When the person is interiorized, his attention is, actually, fixated on the body. When this attention suddenly frees itself up, we have exteriorization. The body, actually, extends as an aura around the solid part. The attention units, when freed up, can be focused in the aura away from the solid part. This makes one feel that one is outside the body, when in fact the Theta-MEST remains integrated. This is more consistent than the hypothesis of “theta leaving MEST.”

KHTK AXIOM 1: Life is the expression of Theta integrated with MEST.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 2: The static is capable of considerations, postulates, and opinions.

The static cannot be measured because it is a total potential. All things manifest when static becomes kinetic. Space comes about as the extents of energy. Thus, energy forms are a phenomenon of space. Furthermore, these energy forms change through innate impulses. This gives us self-animation and the impression of time.

All energy, and its animation, is innate. This animation, when sufficiently complex, appears as life. This is not the production of energy by life as Hubbard assumes. He also assumes these peculiar and individualistic impulses to be thetans. But the impulses are innate to the fabric of the universe, and they express themselves as considerations, postulates and opinions in the process of guiding and governing the animation of energy.

We see consideration as something taken up while making a decision, evaluating facts, etc. We see postulate as something assumed without proof as a basis for reasoning. We see opinion as a judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. These elements appearing spontaneously to generate animations provide the impression of a living unit, which Hubbard called a thetan.

So, thetan is this innate impulse expressing itself through unique workings of considerations, postulates and opinions. To exteriorize the thetan from an area simply requires removing fixation in that area. This area could be the body, or the mind, or even the self. Ultimately, thetan may be exteriorized even from this universe by removing all fixations. Sometimes a person can exteriorize himself from the body by simply postulating no fixations on the body.

KHTK AXIOM 2: The innate impulse of life evolves into considerations, postulates and opinions.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 3: Space, energy, objects, form and time are the result of considerations made and/or agreed upon or not by the static and are perceived solely because the static considers that it can perceive them.

You simply look at what is there. You don’t have to believe that something is there. Energy reflects from things out there and enters your physical sense channels. Your mental sense then assimilates that energy to make the perception continuous, harmonious and consistent (See the Prelogics and the Logics). Any discontinuity, disharmony or inconsistency is seen as an anomaly to be sorted out. (See The Logic of Perception).

Hubbard believed that you perceive what you put out there in the first place. This is not entirely correct. Your mental sense is assimilating the energy that comes in. Your considerations are simply modifying that energy. They act as filters. The effort in Buddhism is to see things as they are without any filters.

NOTE: A postulate is defined here as something assumed without proof as a basis for reasoning.

KHTK AXIOM 3: Space, energy, objects, form and time are postulates that help us assimilate, understand and explain the reality reaching us through our senses.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 4: Space is a viewpoint of dimension.

At present the definitions of matter, energy, space and time in physics are not really circular. The innate fundamental substance of this universe is energy. Space is defined by the extents of energy. If there is no energy there is no space either. “Empty space” is empty of matter only. It is not empty of low vibrational energy.

When we are looking at space, we are looking at the extents of energy (matter is condensed energy). Therefore, it is more correct to say that space is “a viewpoint of dimensions of energy.” Hubbard’s contribution has been to generalize the concept of energy to include life energy. Thus, the concept of space may be expanded to include the extents of life and thought energy.

KHTK AXIOM 4: Space describes the dimensions of energy.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 5: Energy consists of postulated particles in space.

Energy postulates that the substance of the universe is innate. It is neither created nor destroyed. It simply changes from static to kinetic and then back to static again. It is manifested in myriads of forms. All these forms interchange with each other. Science acknowledges this by the Law of Conservation of Energy.

Energy is the most fundamental postulate because all other postulates derive from it. For example, space describes the dimensions of energy; time describes the duration of energy; and matter describes the condensed state of energy.

The innate impulse of energy is its vibration. Energy propagates itself as a wave of that vibration. As vibration increases the energy condenses and appears increasingly as a particle. The most stable particle is the atom. Energy is the substance of both Theta and MEST. We may say Theta energy particles appear as considerations, postulates and opinions.

Hubbard is looking at energy mathematically in the context of space. That reverses the postulates of energy and space. Hubbard describes neither energy nor space fully in a consistent manner.

KHTK AXIOM 5: Energy describes the innate substance of the universe.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 6: Objects consist of grouped particles and solids.

The smallest MEST particles are atoms that combine as molecules and group together as objects. We may extend this same logic to Theta. The smallest Theta particles are considerations, postulates and opinions that may group together as theta objects. The most obvious theta object is a thetan.

But these grouped particles maintain continuity among themselves and with the environment. The high gradient of vibrations at the boundary ensures the identity of the particles. The high gradient at the boundary with the environment ensures the identity of the object. The highly condensed particles and objects move within an environment of energy of very low vibrations, while maintaining continuity with it.

KHTK AXIOM 6: Objects consist of grouped particles of condensed energy.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 7: Time is basically a postulate that space and particles will persist.

Time describes the duration of energy. As energy increases in its vibration, it becomes denser and its duration also increases. Less enduring energy appears to move against a background that is more enduring.

The universe has infinite endurance and it makes a perfect background against which relative endurances (or motions) of the whole spectrum of energy may be observed.

KHTK AXIOM 7: Time describes the duration of energy.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 8: The apparency of time is the change of position of particles in space.

Empty space doesn’t itself seem to move because its energy is invisible. It, therefore, represents the infinite duration of the universe. It forms the background for all visible particles and matter. The visible particles of matter seem to move according to their relative durations. Motion appears as relative change of position in space.

If everything is enduring at the same rate, no motion shall be observed, and it will appear as if no time is passing. Therefore, passage of time is sensed through relative motion.

KHTK AXIOM 8: Time is sensed by the motion of particles in space. The faster is the motion, the faster is time passing.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 9: Change is the primary manifestation of time.

Time relates to motion. Motionless particles do not provide the sense of time. Motion is either acceleration of the body or relative to another body. Therefore, the basis of motion is change relative to oneself or to something else.

When change is occurring, we know for sure that time is passing. It doesn’t have to be a change of position in space. It could be change in any characteristic. A person who is in a rush all the time is unable to consider time directly. He is trying to create time frantically by changing things around him.

KHTK AXIOM 9: Change is the primary manifestation of time.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 10: The highest purpose in this universe is the creation of an effect.

Creating an effect is to bring about some change according to the impulses of life. If errors are made and the resulting effect is not as was desired, then one must take responsibility to correct the errors and resolve any situation. When one does not take responsibility, no further progress is made. Instead life deteriorates.

KHTK AXIOM 10: The highest purpose in the universe is to evolve by taking full responsibility.

The Prelogics (old)

Please see The Prelogics

L. Ron Hubbard analyzed life in its relationship to matter, energy, space and time and as a result evolved the Pre-logics. These were published in late 1951 as a result of many years of research into the nature of life and the spirituality of man.

Knowledge is a pyramid, and knowledge as a pyramid has a common denominator which evaluates all other data below it. At the top point of this pyramid, we have what could be called a Q, and it could also be called a common denominator. It is in common to every other datum in this pyramid full of data.

The Qs are the highest echelon from which all other things are derived.

Q came from quod in Q.E.D. (quod erat demonstrandum, meaning “which was to be shown or demonstrated,” used especially in mathematical proofs).

Actually, Q can be defined this way: It is the level from which we are now viewing, which is a common denominator to all experience which we can now view. This is the level which acts as a common denominator to all this experience, and is the highest level from which we are operating. This data, then, would stand behind everything else that we do.

Q simply means the most common datum that sums all other data.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 1: Self-determinism is the common denominator of all life impulses.

A life impulse by its very nature is something innate or inborn. It has to be there at the beginning of the universe. It has to be woven into the very fabric of the universe. Any motion of the universe must proceed from such an impulse. The evolution of the universe depends on such an impulse. Therefore, the vibrations of energy are innate. The motion of electrons in an atom is innate.

KHTK Q 1: All life impulses are naturally innate.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 2: Definition of self-determinism: the ability to locate in space and time, energy and matter, also the ability to create space and time in which to create and locate energy and matter.

Space and time are the characteristics of energy and matter. Without energy and matter there is neither space nor time. Matter comes about because of condensation of energy. Therefore, the innate vibrations appear as energy. As vibrations change, so does energy. As energy condenses, its extents (space) reduce, and its duration (time) increases.

There is no “nothing” in absolute sense because vibration (energy) is always there. Therefore, there is creation only in the sense of change from one state to another. Outwardly, the change is in terms of vibration; but, inwardly, the change occurs in terms of awareness.

A change has a beginning and an end, but the universe has neither beginning nor end. There is nothing “outside” the universe influencing the universe. It is the universe influencing itself. It may appear that one part of the universe is influencing another part; but the universe overall is self-determined.

On a universal scale, the self-determinism is the natural balance. For example, if there is a hill in one place, then there is a valley in another.

KHTK Q 2: Definition of self-determinism: The ability to bring balanced changes within oneself and in the environment.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 3: The identification of the source of that which places matter and energy and originates space and time is not necessary to the resolution of this problem at this time.

It may appear that one part of the universe is causing changes in another part of the universe. However, the whole universe is, essentially, making changes within itself because it is one continuous system. Each part of the universe is influenced by the rest of the universe. The nature of changes may be identified at every point within the system.

Therefore, human self is a part of the universe. It has self-determinism built into it, but it is also influenced by the rest of the universe.

KHTK Q 3: The overall source of self-determinism is the universe. The human self has self-determinism built into it, but it is also influenced by the rest of the universe.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 4: Theta creates space, energy and objects by postulates.

Theta is the innate nature of the universe. Space-energy-objects (Mest) is the outward form of the universe. Theta and Mest are simply two different aspects of the universe. Neither creates the other.

Similarly, humans have an innate nature (thetan), and an outward form (body). Postulates are made by humans to understand the natural phenomena, which is the universe.

With this understanding the changes can be made to the universe to make it evolve more rapidly.

KHTK Q 4: Theta, space, energy and objects are innate phenomena of the universe. Postulates serve to bring understanding to these phenomena.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 5: Universes are created by the application of self-determinism on eight dynamics.

There is one overall universe. Some people happen to refer to parts of universe as “universes” too. This clarification is made because the overall universe is intrinsically continuous, harmonious and consistent.

The eight dynamics refer to aspects of the universe. For example, the overall universe is Eighth Dynamic that has the aspects of Seventh Dynamic (Theta) and Sixth Dynamic (MEST). The seventh and sixth dynamics evolve together to produce Fifth Dynamic (life). The highest point of evolution of the Fifth Dynamic is the Fourth Dynamic (Mankind). The Fourth Dynamic subdivides into Third Dynamic (Groups). The smallest unit of Third Dynamic is the Second Dynamic (Family) that has a special way of forming and propagating through sexual activity. The third and second dynamics are made up of the First Dynamic (individuals).

Self-determinism refers to the innate impulse that exists in the fabric of the universe. That impulse, therefore, exists in each of the dynamics, making it what it is.

KHTK Q 5: Self-determinism is the innate impulse that makes the universe expand and evolve into the eight dynamics.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 6: Self-determinism, applied, will create, alter, conserve and possibly destroy universes.

The Universe is everything. Self-determinism is the innate characteristic of this universe. Self-determinism does not exist apart from the universe. It underlies all the power there is in the universe to change and evolve.

It is interesting to note that Scientology takes the viewpoint of the individual (First Dynamic), whereas, KHTK takes the viewpoint of the Universe (Eighth Dynamic). That is the major difference.

KHTK Q 6: Self-determinism underlies all the power there is in the universe to change and evolve.

.

SCIENTOLOGY Q 7: The action cycle is one of the abilities of a thetan. An action cycle goes from 40.0 to 0.0 on the Tone Scale. An action cycle is the creation, growth, conservation, decay and death or destruction of energy and matter in a space. Action cycles produce time.

Thetan may be identified as the viewpoint related to First Dynamic, whereas, Theta is the universal viewpoint related to the Eighth Dynamic. The viewpoint narrows down from Eighth to the First Dynamic. Thetan may be viewed as the individuation from Theta. A person grows as his viewpoint broadens from first to eighth dynamic.

The 40.0 on the Tone Scale represents the broadest viewpoint. It is totally free and objective. Therefore, it is unfixed and detached from everything. The 0.0 on the Tone Scale represents the narrowest viewpoint. It is totally bound and subjective. Therefore, it is completely fixated and attached in one manner or another.

The Action Cycle is basically a cycle of change from total static to total kinetic and then back to total static. A good example of this is the pendulum. The energy of the pendulum starts converting from potential state (static) to kinetic in the first half of its swing, reaching full kinetic state at the midpoint; after which it starts converting back from kinetic to potential reaching full potential state (static) at the end of the swing.

The energy is neither created out of nothing, nor destroyed into nothing. In static state, energy is simply unmanifested. In kinetic state, energy is fully manifested. The static state exists at either end of the Action Cycle where everything stops momentarily before changing direction. In this state all energy exists in potential form. This potential energy is then expressed as kinetic energy during rest of the cycle by different degrees. The time from one static state to the next is called the Period of the Action Cycle.

KHTK Q 7: The action cycle is a cycle of change from a static state to a kinetic state then back to the static state. It may be applied to the Universe. It may also be applied to a viewpoint from 40.0 to 0.0 on the Tone Scale. Change is the characteristic of Time.

.

Multiverse and Universe

All reality is part of a single system. We call this system “the universe”. We tend to think that each person lives in his own universe. Even some scientists are talking about “multiverses”. But these “multiverses” have their basis in subjective mathematics. Science has always assumed that the universe is, as its name implies, a vast single system.

Mathematically, “multiverses” are discrete units. But, no matter how discrete the forms are on the surface, they are continuous at a fundamental level. Whole numbers, which appear to be discrete, are connected by fractions and irrational numbers on a continuous number line. Thus, it is very likely that there is continuity among discrete “multiverses” at some level. They all are part of an overall set of UNIVERSE.

.

MULTIVERSE (Subjective): There are many universes as viewed by different people.

UNIVERSE (Objective): The universe, as its name implies, is a vast single system.

The Law of Continuum

Continuum

Reference: Mindfulness Meditation

.

The law of Continuum is a universal law. It manifests itself as continuity, harmony and consistency. The law of Continuum underlies all evolution, where it appears as cosmic intelligence.

A careful study shows that the universe is a continuum. All structures in the universe are continuous, harmonious, and consistent with each other. Underlying those structures is the same basic substance.

That basic substance may be called “consciousness”. As consciousness is disturbed, it quantizes into thought, force and matter as the frequency of this disturbance increases.

The law of continuum is self-evident from the universal viewpoint. As the viewpoint narrows, the anomalies of discontinuity, disharmony and inconsistency creep in, and unwanted conditions follow.

Currently, anomalies may be found to exist in the following thought structures:

  1. There is a common belief that God created the world. This belief leads to errors when discontinuity is assumed between God and the world.

  2. There is a belief that spirit is completely separate from the physical universe. This implies erroneously that disharmony exists between spirit and the physical universe.

  3. There is a belief that spiritual entities act on the material entities and not vice versa. This implies erroneously that there is inconsistency between spiritual and material entities.

Spirit and matter forms a duality, and so does many other things in this universe, such as, “something—nothing”, “life—death”, “success—failure”, etc. A narrow viewpoint sees duality erroneously as two separate conditions, and ignores the law of Continuum.

A universal viewpoint, however,  sees duality as two ends of a continuous scale per the law of Continuum.

To resolve unwanted conditions, a person must be able to assume the Universal viewpoint and apply the law of Continuum to let go of the anomalies of discontinuity, disharmony and inconsistency.

Emptiness and Self

whirlpool_by_lord_rosse
Reference: Mindfulness Approach

.

The Buddhist concept of “emptiness” is described at Emptiness.

EMPTINESS is the ultimate reference point from which all phenomena can be understood objectively without any pre-conceived notion.

The Buddhist concept of “self” is described at The Structure of “I”

There is no unmoving mover behind the movement. It is only movement.

It is not correct to say that life is moving, but life is movement itself. Life and movement are not two different things. In other words, there is no thinker behind the thought. Thought itself is the thinker.

If you remove the thought, there is no thinker to be found.

Here we cannot fail to notice how this Buddhist view is diametrically opposed to the Cartesian cogito ergo sum: ‘I think, therefore I am.’ Buddhism is counter-intuitive, indeed.

So, in nirvana, fixation on the idea of self simply disappears into emptiness.

The self is simply a mock-up. It is however you mock it up. Underlying the fixation of self is emptiness.

You stop mocking up the self, and you disappear too.

For most people that is terrible, indeed!

But the disappearance of “you” or “I” means the disappearance of the fixations (fixed ideas, prejudices, assumptions) that distort perception.

What remains is the universal viewpoint with no preconceived notion.

Buddhism is the only system based on the OBJECTIVITY of “emptiness”, and not on the SUBJECTIVITY of “self”.

Buddha said, “The Absolute Truth is that there is nothing absolute in the world, that everything is relative, conditioned and impermanent, and that there is no unchanging, everlasting, absolute substance like Self, Soul, or Ātman within or without.”

All systems of religion and philosophy (other than Buddhism) are based on the subjectivity of “self”.

The basic-basic that Hubbard was looking for in Scientology is the fixation on thetan (soul, self) that installs an arbitrary pre-conceived notion as the reference point in one’s thinking.
