The Fundamental Error in Dianetics

The following is a quote from introduction to The Dianetic Axioms:

“L. Ron Hubbard found that man is obeying very, very definite laws and rules which could be set forward in axioms. The very first and most fundamental of these is: The dynamic principle of existence is survive. That is the basic axiom of Dianetics.”

The scientific observations show that the dynamic principle of this universe could be considered as “change”, because everything in this universe is in motion (always changing). It is theorized that motion may come to rest at the temperature of absolute zero. But the universe is not at a temperature of absolute zero. As far as, science is concerned, everything in this universe is continually changing at all levels.

However, the natural tendency of motion seems to attain some kind of equilibrium. It is like bodies at different temperatures, when brought in contact, tend towards a single equilibrium temperature. But the “equilibrium” in case of the universe seems to be returning to continuity, harmony and consistency after being disturbed. This is explained in greater details in the essay, Self-Determinism and Laws of the Universe.

So, from a broad scientific viewpoint,  the dynamic principle of this universe seems to be “change toward greater continuity, harmony and consistency after being disturbed.”

The word “survive” is used broadly to mean “to remain or continue in existence or use”, as in the sentence, “Ancient farming methods still survive in the Middle East.” Or, in the sentence. “Few survived after the holocaust.” But to regard “survive” as a dynamic principle of existence, would mean “there is a state that continues as it is throughout all changes unconditionally”. This is not so in reality.

In Dianetics, the human soul or beingness is assumed to “survive” unconditionally. This is an idea borrowed from Christianity where human soul is thought to be immortal. That is a subjective consideration, and not a dynamic principle of existence. Thus, Hubbard is considering “survive” from a limited human-centric viewpoint and not from a universal viewpoint.

It would be an error to consider “survive” as a scientific principle applying to all existence as it is subjective and vague.

Scientifically, the dynamic principle of existence is CHANGE toward greater continuity, harmony and consistency as the universe evolves.

Applying this scientific principle to Dianetics may bring about some interesting understanding about the condition of Man.

Axioms 31-45

DN AXIOM 31: Wrongness is always miscalculation of effort.

.

DN AXIOM 32: THETA can exert itself directly or extensionally.

THETA can direct physical application of the organism to the environment or, through the mind, can first calculate the action or extend, as in language, ideas.

.

DN AXIOM 33: Conclusions are directed toward the inhibition, maintenance or accelerations of efforts.

.

DN AXIOM 34: The common denominator of all life organisms is motion.

.

DN AXIOM 35: Effort of an organism to survive or succumb is physical motion of a life organism at a given moment in time through space.

DEFINITION: Motion is any change in orientation in space.
DEFINITION: Force is random effort.
DEFINITION: Effort is directed force.

.

DN AXIOM 36: An organism’s effort can be to remain at rest or persist in a given motion.

Static state has position in time, but an organism which is remaining positionally in a static state, if alive, is still continuing a highly complex pattern of motion, such as the heartbeat, digestion, etc.

The efforts of organisms to survive or succumb are assisted, compelled or opposed by the efforts of other organisms, matter, energy, space and time.

DEFINITION: Attention is a motion which must remain at an optimum effort. Attention is aberrated by becoming unfixed and sweeping at random or becoming too fixed without sweeping.

Unknown threats to survival when sensed cause attention to sweep without fixing. Known threats to survival when sensed cause attention to fix.

PM AXIOM 36: An organism’s effort can be to remain at rest as in equilibrium, or persist in a given motion.

An attribute of higher level organisms is attention. Attention is a motion which must remain at an optimum effort. Attention is aberrated by sweeping at random or becoming too fixed.

.

DN AXIOM 37: The ultimate goal of LAMBDA is infinite survival.

.

DN AXIOM 38: Death is abandonment by THETA of a life organism or race or species where these can no longer serve THETA in its goals of infinite survival.

.

DN AXIOM 39: The reward of an organism engaging upon survival activity is pleasure.

.

DN AXIOM 40: The penalty of an organism failing to engage upon survival activity, or engaging in non-survival activity, is pain.

.

DN AXIOM 41: The cell and virus are the primary building blocks of life organisms.

.

DN AXIOM 42: The virus and cell are matter and energy animated and motivated in space and time by THETA.

.

DN AXIOM 43: THETA mobilizes the virus and cell in colonial aggregations to increase potential motion and accomplish effort.

.

DN AXIOM 44: The goal of viruses and cells is survival in space through time.

.

DN AXIOM 45: The total mission of higher organisms, viruses and cells is the same as that of the virus and cell.

Axioms 16-30

DN AXIOM 16: The basic food of any organism consists of light and chemicals.
Organisms can exist only as higher levels of complexities because lower levels of converters exist.
THETA evolves organisms from lower to higher forms and supports them by the existence of lower converter forms.

.

DN AXIOM 17: THETA, via LAMBDA, effects an evolution of MEST.
In this we have the waste products of organisms on the one hand as those very complex chemicals which bacteria make and, on the other hand, we have the physical face of the Earth being changed by animals and men, such changes as grass holding mountains from eroding or roots causing boulders to break, buildings being built and rivers being dammed. There is obviously an evolution in MEST in progress under the incursion of THETA.

.

DN AXIOM 18: LAMBDA, even within a species, varies in its endowment of THETA.

THETA is the vector resulting from the assimilation of all inherent motion. Theta is a variable where an organism’s inherent motion is concerned.

.

DN AXIOM 19: The effort of LAMBDA is toward survival. The goal of LAMBDA is survival. The penalty of failure to advance toward that goal is to succumb.
DEFINITION: Persistence is the ability to exert continuance of effort toward survival goals.

This is a universe of change. A form appears, survives for some time, and then disappears. No form survives forever. Therefore, the natural goal in this universe is evolution. As forms evolve they survive better.

.

DN AXIOM 20: LAMBDA creates, conserves, maintains, requires, destroys, changes, occupies, groups and disperses MEST.
LAMBDA survives by animating and mobilizing or destroying matter and energy in space and time.

.

DN AXIOM 21: LAMBDA is dependent upon optimum motion. Motion which is too swift and motion which is too slow are equally contra survival.

Life organism must maintain a harmonious rate of interaction with their environment. When this rate is too swift or too slow it works against their survival.

.

DN AXIOM 22: THETA and thought are similar orders of static.

THETA is the static viewpoint. Thought comes about when postulates occur to explain what is there.

.

DN AXIOM 23: All thought is concerned with motion.

What is there is sensed as something dynamic. Thought begins as postulates to provide perception to that dynamic sensation.

.

DN AXIOM 24: The establishment of an optimum motion is a basic goal of reason.
DEFINITION: LAMBDA is a chemical heat engine existing in space and time motivated by the life static and directed by thought.

Thought is the basic fabric that dynamically constructs point by point what is there to be perceived. It brings about consistency of perception. This is the basic goal of reason. This fabric of thought hardens into radiation and matter and give structure to the life organism.

.

DN AXIOM 25: The basic purpose of reason is the calculation or estimation of effort.

Thought recognizes where oneness is violated. It then postulates and assimilates all the postulates to bring about oneness of perception. This is how reason functions.

.

DN AXIOM 26: Thought is accomplished by THETA FACSIMILES of physical universe, entities or actions.

Life organisms maintain a mental matrix in which all sensations received by the organism are assimilated. Thoughts are generated when perceptions cannot be assimilated due to anomalies (discontinuities, inconsistencies, and disharmonies). The goal of these thoughts is accomplished when the anomalies are resolved.

.

DN AXIOM 27: THETA is satisfied only with harmonious action or optimum motion and rejects or destroys action or motion above or below its tolerance band.

PM AXIOM 27: Evolution in this universe requires eliminating all extremely slow or sudden shifts in motion and establishing harmonious action.

.

DN AXIOM 28: The mind is concerned wholly with the estimation of effort.
DEFINITION: Mind is the THETA command post of any organism or organisms.

The reason is applied through the mental matrix of the life organism, which is concerned wholly with the resolution of anomalies. Therefore, the mental matrix may be regarded as the command post of the life organism.

.

DN AXIOM 29: The basic errors of reason are failure to differentiate amongst matter, energy, space and time.

.

DN AXIOM 30: Rightness is proper calculation of effort.

.

Axioms 1-15

DN AXIOM 1: The source of life is a static of peculiar and particular properties.

Anything that we perceive is a form that is built up out of our sensations. The actual source of this universe and the life within it is unknowable. But we can postulate it and then perceive it. We may postulate this source as an absolute motionless static that acts as the reference point for all motion, just like zero acts as the reference point for all numbers. The reasoning is that one can become fully aware of all motion only from a motionless reference point.

.

DN AXIOM 2: At least a portion of the static called life is impinged upon the physical universe.

DN AXIOM 3: That portion of the static of life which is impinged upon the physical universe has for its dynamic goal, survival and only survival.

.

DN AXIOM 4: The physical universe is reducible to motion of energy operating in space through time.

.

DN AXIOM 5: That portion of the static of life concerned with the life organisms of the physical universe is concerned wholly with motion.

This substance forms a spectrum in which as consistency decreases, the motion increases. For example, we observe in atom, the electrons having lesser consistency but higher motion than the nucleus. Thus, substance can have complex forms made of varying consistencies and motions. The more complex is the form and its motion, the more it is identified as a life organism. But a simple form with its simple motion, such as an atom, can also be identified as having an elemental form of life.

.

DN AXIOM 6: The life static has as one of its properties the ability to mobilize and animate matter into living organisms.

The ability to mobilize and animate matter into living organisms means that the universe has the ability to evolve complex structures exhibiting complex motion. This inherent complex motion appears as the attribute of self-animation of life. A living organism is just this complex structure with self-animation.

.

DN AXIOM 7: The life static is engaged in a conquest of the physical universe.

There is no “spiritual agent” engaged in the conquest of “physical universe”. It just an assumption that the spiritual and physical elements have separate existence. The two are different aspects of the same universe that is evolving toward increasing complex life organisms.

.

DN AXIOM 8: The life static conquers the material universe by learning and applying the physical laws of the physical universe.

SYMBOL: The symbol for the LIFE STATIC in use hereafter is the Greek letter THETA.

There is no such thing as the “conquering of the physical universe.” There is only the evolution of the universe toward increasing complex systems. The natural laws underlying these complex systems are also evolving. This evolution involves continually increasing assimilation of the postulates underlying the universe towards increasingly greater ONENESS. The “Life Static” (Theta) is postulated as the spiritual agent. But it is nothing more that a static viewpoint from which all motion can be perceived as is.

.

DN AXIOM 9: A fundamental operation of THETA in surviving is bringing order into the chaos of the physical universe.

The viewpoint of THETA observes all motion of the universe to be evolving from chaos toward increasing order. The life organisms help support and accelerate this evolution.

.

DN AXIOM 10: THETA brings order into chaos by conquering whatever in MEST may be pro-survival and destroying whatever in MEST may be contra-survival, at least through the medium of life organisms.

SYMBOL: The symbol for the PHYSICAL UNIVERSE in use hereafter is MEST, from the first letters of the words MATTER, ENERGY, SPACE and TIME, or the Greek letter PHI.

Hubbard uses THETA as a symbol for a purely “spiritual agent”, and MEST as a symbol for a purely “physical universe”. Both are assumptions that lead to an erroneous hypothesis. The physical may denote substance, while the spiritual may denote the inherent motion of the substance. Anything pro-survival brings greater order and organization. Anything contra-survival opposes that.

.

DN AXIOM 11: A life organism is composed of matter and energy in space and time, animated by THETA.

SYMBOL: Living organism or organisms will hereafter be represented by the Greek letter LAMBDA.

.

DN AXIOM 12: The MEST part of the organism follows the laws of the physical sciences. All LAMBDA is concerned with motion.

.

DN AXIOM 13: THETA operating through LAMBDA converts the forces of the physical universe into forces to conquer the physical universe.

.

DN AXIOM 14: THETA working upon physical universe motion must maintain a harmonious rate of motion.

The limits of LAMBDA are narrow, both as to thermal and mechanical motion.

.

DN AXIOM 15: LAMBDA is the intermediate step in the conquest of the physical universe.

The Mind’s Resolution

tripping-through-bogomils-mind-otto-rapp

Previous: The Human Mind
Next: Mindfulness Approach

A mind is troubled when it is beset with doubts, perplexities and problems. Such troubles come from misalignment of data in the mind, which prevents the mind from resolving the troubles.  If that data could be aligned the troubles shall resolve.

The mind tries to resolve the misalignment of data by making postulates. A postulate is something taken as self-evident or assumed without proof as a basis for reasoning. A postulate is valid to the degree it helps align data. A valid postulate makes it possible to resolves doubts, perplexities and problems.

A postulate is something taken as self-evident or assumed without proof as a basis for reasoning.

The common error occurs when the postulates align data only within a narrow context. Thus difficulties and problems are partially resolved in a narrow context only. From this comes about the idea of comfort zones. The narrow-minded postulates do not work beyond their comfort zones.

People become used to their narrow-minded postulates. These postulates become part of their mindset and beingness. They are happy as long as they are in their comfort zone. But when their circumstances change they find it difficult to adjust and they become unhappy. Most people are unhappy because nothing remains the same in this universe for long. It is common to be thrown out of comfort zone.

The mind becomes problematic when its postulates align data only within a narrow context.

In other words, all problems come from being narrow-minded. The solution, therefore, is to have postulates that help one align data in as broad a context as possible. One’s postulate must be flexible. When one becomes aware of a larger context, one should be able to update the postulates to align data in that larger context.

The solution is to develop postulates that help one align data in as broad a context as possible.

The mind becomes more problematic as its narrow-minded postulates become fixed. Resistance to change comes from fixed narrow-minded postulates.  The only way to overcome this resistance is to encourage willingness to examine the misalignments of data in a larger context.

Resistance to change comes from narrow-minded postulates that have become fixed.

Postulates that help align data in a universal context are considered objective. The laws pf physics fall in this category and so do the fundamental postulates of various philosophies. Postulates that help align data in a limited context only are considered subjective.

Postulates that can help align data in a universal context are objective. They can help resolve all doubts, perplexities and problems

Subjective postulates are usually limited to the context of “self” of a person. These subjective postulates act like filters that “color” the perceptions and evaluations of the person. Any problems that extend beyond the “self” of the person cannot be resolved by subjective postulates.

A person unwilling to change his subjective postulates ends up generating unusual solutions to resolve his problems. His life becomes increasingly complex, and he mostly runs around on wild goose chases.

Subjective postulates make one’s life very complex.

Free association helps one align data in a universal context. It helps one upgrade the postulates from subjective to objective. Sometimes misalignments in data come about from traumatic painful experiences. To resolve such misalignments free association needs to be carried out in a patient and disciplined manner. That discipline is provided by mindfulness.

Severe misalignments of data may be resolved through practice of free association under the discipline of mindfulness.

In cases where deeply painful data is difficult to access, a mindfulness guide may help the person through needed free associations. The mind is then able to inspect the postulates made under traumatic conditions and sort them out.
