FG Version: Preface

Reference: Postulate Mechanics

NOTE: PM means “Postulate Mechanics.” FG means “Fifth Grader.”

All my life, I wanted to understand things that confused me. There were many subjects I did not understand, and that bothered me. I studied science, but quantum mechanics was too hard for me. Life itself also seemed very complicated.

When I retired in 2012, I finally had time to look for answers. I decided to study the connection between physics, which studies the physical world, and metaphysics, which asks deeper questions about reality.

I began with the things I had not understood when I was young, especially in school. I studied the basics of mathematics, physics, and Hinduism. I also looked at Buddhism and Scientology, which I had studied later in life.

One helpful idea I learned from Scientology was to clear up the meanings of words. I used this idea when I ran a Math Club at the Safety Harbor Library from 1995 to 2010. Later, I started a blog to help people learn by themselves. I also tutored math and wrote The Book of Mathematics on my blog.

In 2015, I helped young adults who had dropped out of high school prepare for their GED tests. They were using computer programs to learn math, but many of them just sat there, confused and frustrated. They wanted the GED certificate, but they did not really know how to learn the math.

I worked with them one by one. I tried to find the words and ideas they did not understand. But they were overwhelmed. There was too much coming at them all at once. This reminded me of how I had felt when I tried to learn quantum mechanics.

Then I had a breakthrough. I began teaching math from the very beginning. I explained the easiest ideas first, then slowly moved to harder ones. I focused on important math words and used puzzles to keep things interesting. I used an abacus to explain numbers.

The students felt relieved when they saw that all numbers are written using only ten digits, 0 through 9, just as all English words are written using only 26 letters. I showed them how place value works in our number system. Soon they could read and write large numbers with confidence.

This made them interested. They started asking many questions. I realized that these were the basic ideas they had never truly understood before. This experience helped me develop what I call Subject Clearing.

Subject Clearing means learning a subject in a clear order. You start with the simplest definitions and ideas. Then you move step by step to harder ideas, without skipping anything important. Every subject has its own inner logic, and learning becomes easier when that logic is followed smoothly.

It took me some time to see how powerful this method was. Then I wondered: could I study the whole universe as a subject? That sounded like a very big idea. But I was retired and had time, so I kept going.

Then I realized that the key idea I had been missing was the meaning of the word “Substance.” That gave me the starting point for this book, Postulate Mechanics. This book may only touch the surface of the universe, but I am sharing it anyway.

More than the book itself, I want to share the method of Subject Clearing. It has helped me understand many ideas discovered by great thinkers of the past. I feel lucky to have had the education I received, and I feel lucky to live in the age of the Internet, where so much knowledge is available.

I am happy to share what I have learned through Subject Clearing. I hope this method helps you too.
