SCN 8-8008: Beingness, Doingness, Havingness

This paper presents Section 11 from the book SCIENTOLOGY 8-8008 by L. RON HUBBARD. The contents are from the original publication of this book by The Church of Scientology (1952).

The paragraphs of the original material (in black) are accompanied by brief comments (in color) based on the present understanding.  Feedback on these comments is appreciated.

The heading below is linked to the original materials.

Space is not necessary to the beingness of a thetan when the thetan is above the tone level of 40.0 and can create space at will. He creates space to have specific beingness. At 40.0 space and beingness can be considered to be interchangeable. Beingness can exist without any energy or matter, which is to say, without time.

There can be no space (awareness) without substance (thought). Beingness starts out as totally harmonious (assimilated) thought at 40.0. Above 40.0 there is just emptiness. To have beingness there must be thought energy. The identity of the mental matrix is expressed as “thetan”.

However, in this universe, in order to achieve a state of beingness, which is more to our point here, it is necessary to have a viewpoint from which dimension points can be created or controlled. One has as much viewpoint as he has space in which to view in relationship to other viewpoints having space in which to view, thus one has a condition of relative beingness.

At 40.0 the viewpoint of beingness is universal (objective). The dimension points extended are part of the beingness. The beingness is totally aware of itself. The attention units looking at different areas may be considered different viewpoints, but they all, being objective, are in complete agreement.

As beingness descends on the tone scale, the viewpoints start to become narrower. They provide the “boundary conditions” for the beingness; therefore, the original beingness starts to break down into narrower beingnesses. Viewpoints are no longer in agreement because there are not fully objective. Now they see a universe separate from them populated by other viewpoints and dimension points. Here we have individuality entering into the picture.

As the viewpoint rises up the tone scale, the broadness of viewpoint becomes more obvious among the individualities. This is not merging of individualities by any means. We may call this the emerging sense of the common purpose of evolution.

Action requires space and energy manifestations, and the definition of action could be doingness directed toward havingness. In order to accomplish action, a preclear must be able to handle energy.

Doingness means motion. Thus there is energy being directed by underlying force. This is accomplished through consciousness being shaped by the underlying desire. All this takes place within the confines of the viewpoint.

Doingness with energy and objects as found in the MEST universe is very far from the only method of producing existence. This is a specialized form of behaviour and may exist in any universe but is very peculiar to the MEST universe.

There is continual feedback as doingness takes place. The results of what is happening always influence what is going to happen next.

Time is an abstract manifestation which has no existence beyond the idea of time occasioned by objects, where an object may be either energy or matter. Time can be defined as change in space, but where one attempts to define motion as change in space; the definition lacks usefulness since one does not define what is changing in space; there must be something there to change in space in order to have the illusion of time.

As was earlier discovered in Scientology, the single arbitrary is time. This is because time did not exist as such but stemmed from havingness. When Man experiences “time,” he is experiencing havingness or not-havingness.

Time is summed up as “had,” “have,” and “will have.” Goals in the MEST universe are summed uniformly under the heading of “will have.” One engages in action in order to have.

With force producing motion we have energy; and with desire modifying awareness we have emerging consciousness. As the force of desire intensifies we have consciousness condensing into more enduring behaviors and experiences. When things are enduring they influence what happens next.

This is one of the most important points of processing. The individual has made a postulate to have and has then gained something he did not want at every single point on the time track where you find him stuck. He desired to have a castle. He may have been engaging in an action which would gain for him a castle and was stopped and killed by an explosion which destroyed a wall before him. The explosion caught him with a postulate that he would have and gave him something he did not want. Struggling with the facsimile afterwards, the auditor will find that the incident began with the postulate to have and is now in a state of indecision since the explosion is unwanted.

When things are enduring it takes time to bring further changes. This is like increasing inertia slows down the velocity (activity); or increasing complexity slows down forward progress. It is not easy to turn things around if things don’t happen as desired.

Bluntly, any and all aberrative incidents to be discovered in a preclear are a reversal of havingness where the preclear did not want something and had to have it or wanted something and could not have it or wanted something and got something else.

The entire problem of the future is the problem of goals. The entire problem of goals is the problem of possession. The entire problem of possession is the problem of time.

Time is impossible without possession of objects.

People get into trouble when it is too late to make changes. Foresight was missing. One did not predict the outcome. Things happened that were not planned. Hindsight may show what was missed but then it is too late. There is too much confusion. One is stuck with what one has.

Thus is resolved one of the weightier problems of the human mind. The auditor may find it difficult to encompass this principle, since time may continue to exist for him as an entity, an unknown and hovering thing. If he will use the principle that the past is had or did not have, that the present is has or does not have and that the future is will have or will not have, and that past, present and future are divided and established entirely by desire, enforcement and inhibition of havingness, he will find his preclear recovering swiftly.

Turning back the time is basically unwinding the confusion. The whole problem of auditing is how to unwind the confusion once it is spotted. The confusion is between what was desired and what one ended up having. One simply unwinds this confusion.

In Scientology, Hubbard champions individuality that is competing intensely with other “individualities”. It is interesting to observe that such “individuality” comes about with the narrowing of viewpoint from a universal level. Hubbard believes that broadening of viewpoint would merge one with universe with the loss of individuality.

Broadening one’s viewpoint does not mean that one loses individuality and merges with others. It simply means that one becomes capable of seeing things as they are, without any filters. One is very much in control of one’s interests, goals and purposes while living in cooperation and harmony with rest of the universe.

A person is motivated by desires that guide his actions toward having individual experiences. The broad viewpoint helps one attain knowledge and foresight with which to navigate the present toward distant future goals. Trouble arises when viewpoints are narrow and lack knowledge. As one lacks foresight, one may get trapped into situations where it is too late to turn back. One is then stuck with experiences that are difficult to assimilate. Subject clearing then help one assimilate such experiences, attain knowledge and broaden one’s viewpoint.

A human being is at the evolutionary peak of this universe. He is very much himself but also in harmony with rest of the universe. He is the vanguard with the responsibility of evolving this universe further.

Hello and thank you for posting this, as today I was pondering this epitome recollected from the late 1960s, when I left home to seek my fortune and got hooked in NYC by the orgs ;-). Nevertheless, life kept me free, in this case for lack of cash, which was all well and good…

Actually I was pondering this “be-do-have business” in a new light of my current study of Pythagorean Hylozoics, (a relatively recently appearing presentation which is completely free of materialistic orgs at this point and is instead giving latent adherents a head up in their incarnations). This particular source hylozoics, (see laurency dot com), presents a simpler, more refined origination as follows.

Pythagoras originally taught that the three aspects of existence are consciousness, motion and matter which might provide a clearer basis for being, doing and having.

Hello Bo, you have interesting blogs. Thank you for writing.

You write, “Pythagoras originally taught that the three aspects of existence are consciousness, motion and matter which might provide a clearer basis for being, doing and having.” I can see that.

I have recently been compiling a list of postulates to provide me with a framework, using which I can align the knowledge that I come across. What you have fits with the following postulate:

POSTULATE # 3: Energy condenses from thought to electromagnetic radiation to material objects.

COROLLARY: The innate impulse of energy condenses from considerations to flow to structure.

I am sure these postulates will have higher harmonics where they will have a more specific form. But this is something I have started to compile very recently to assimilate the tremendous amount of data that exists out there. Actually, I recently studied a bit of Pythagoras from Wikipedia.

These postulates are a work in progress. See below.

At the moment I am stuck and not sure where to go after Postulate # 15. So, I decided to go through basic Buddhist texts. Maybe you can help with a discussion.
