The Nature of Energy

Reference: The Universe and Physical Elements

The word “energy,” as used by Newton meant, the “capacity for doing work imparted by matter in motion.” Moving matter had momentum that was transferred upon impact. The change in momentum of an object constituted force acting upon that object. When that force produced movement against some resistance, it was seen as work being performed. The capacity for doing work was then converted into actual work. Thus, we have mechanical energy. Heat was also recognized as energy. Heat involves motion of matter at atomic level. Thus, the basis of energy is momentum resulting from matter in motion.

In other words, to have energy we must have both matter (substance) and motion.

We usually recognize matter as a substance because it is substantial enough to be sensed; but when it comes to light, we recognize it only as energy. Light is recognized to have momentum, even when it is minuscule compared to a material particle.

Light is energy. Is light a substance with motion?

Newton did consider light to be a substance with motion. He considered light to be made of particles.

Light being a substance, that was very different from matter, was considered by Newton.

But, the existence of light particles could not be proved. Not everyone looked at light as a substance. Many looked at light as a wave traveling in space, and a wave theory for light was advanced. This theory did not require light to be a substance, but it did require a substantial medium for the propagation of light.

The alternative of light being a wave that was traveling in some medium was considered by most physicists.

Meanwhile, electricity was discovered and was intensely studied. Electricity was found to be a substance that was very different from matter. Based on his very precise experiments, Faraday forwarded the idea that electricity consisted of lines of force. These lines of force, when concentrated, formed the atoms of matter. Faraday supported Newton’s idea of light having substance. He suggested that light consisted of much finer lines of force.

Faraday suggested that matter got loosened into lines of force in electricity and light, and no medium was required for the propagation of light.

Maxwell applied the idea of lines of force to the wave theory of light. Using brilliant mathematics, Maxwell developed an electromagnetic theory, from which he could derive the “speed of light”. This was a wonderful validation of the electromagnetic theory. But Maxwell had to assume certain electromagnetic properties for space. Maxwell essentially declared space to be the medium for light waves. Later when very precise experimentation was carried out, no such medium for light could be detected. This was shocking for most physicists.

Light, more likely, was a substance that spread out in wave form.

Soon after the above discovery, Max Planck came up with the mathematical concept of “quantum” to resolve the problem of Black Body radiation. This idea basically proposed a proportionality between radiant energy and its frequency. This was a radical departure from classical physics because, in wave theory, energy is proportional to the amplitude. Einstein then applied this idea of quantum to successfully explain the photoelectric phenomenon, proving that the idea of quantum was quite practical. Based on this understanding, Einstein proposed the concept of “photon” as a particle of light.

Einstein finally provided the proof of light being a substance.

Einstein also showed that a particle of radiative energy became more condensed as it increased in frequency. Thus, the electromagnetic spectrum was also a spectrum of substance that, ultimately, included matter. Furthermore, with increase in frequency the speed of quantum reduced from the speed of light to a fraction of that speed for much condensed electrons.

Energy at the level of light could now be separated into substance and motion as in the case of matter.

A substance may now be defined more broadly as “that which is substantial enough to be detected or sensed.” Substance shall range from gradually thickening  radiative energy to rigid matter. Radiative energy was viscous rather than absolutely rigid like matter. Both viscosity and rigidity were now relatable to the property of mass inherent in any substance.

The substance may be quantifiable on a scale of mass.

Experimentally, no variations in the speed of light could be detected, making motion an inherent property of photon. Similarly, motion could be looked upon as an inherent property of quantum throughout the spectrum of substance, even when it could be affected by external conditions within a certain range. Evidently, such inherent speed decreased with increasing viscosity, rigidity or mass.

Motion is inherent to substance to some degree. It may be quantifiable on the scale of mass within a certain range.

Material particles are discrete and they are made of discrete atoms. But the quantum of radiative energy is a continuous wave-like flow of extremely thin consistency. This quantum may be compared to a certain concentration of Faraday’s lines of forces. The consistency of quantum thickens as its frequency increases.

A quantum may be viewed as a concentration of lines of force.

.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

Energy is proportional to frequency actually means that energy is proportional to its “mass density.” The idea of frequency comes from partially successful wave-theory.

Cycles and Substance

The universe is substantial therefore it has substance. In the outermost cycle, this substance is spread out so widely that it is extremely thin and may only be felt as primeval awareness of beingness. As the universe evolves, and the cycles shrink and become more numerous, this substance also thickens, and there is increasing awareness of beingness and activity. As the universe evolves further, and cycles really shrink and become infinitely numerous, the substance has become so thick that it appears solid. The awareness evolves to certainty of beingness, activity and havingness of material forms.

.

Matter & Quantum Particles

That aspect of substance, which appears to us as solid, is called MATTER. It is what makes up the nucleus of an atom. The nucleus acts as the anchor for the whole atom. Similarly, matter acts as the anchor for the whole universe. We are enveloped by matter, which is the layer of the universe most obvious to our senses. Beyond this layer of matter lies rest of the universe, that we try to perceive through metaphysics and religion. Hopefully, science will investigate that aspect of the universe.

Matter has the property of appearing discrete. From the smallest atom to the largest material object, there is a boundary that defines matter. But when we get down to the atom, we find the nucleus surrounded by quantum particles. The word “particle” is a misnomer in the context of “quantum.” These “quantum particles” are not solid. They have a diffused boundary. They are more like a “thick fluid.” The word “quantum” refers to some characteristic of substance, which is not “mass.” We may call it some sort of a “viscous substance” that can exert pressure. Even light can exert pressure, as discovered in science.

We happen to refer to this quantum substance as “energy,” which is a bad choice of a label, but we are stuck with it. The word “energy” when applied to matter, differentiates matter from its motion. But when the word “energy” is applied to light, light itself is identified as motion—the differentiation between what is moving and its motion is lost.

.

Rigidity & Center of Mass

Matter reacts mechanically per the Newton’s laws of motion. But the laws of Newton apply to a “center of mass” that represents “rigid matter with fixed boundary.” There is no center of mass when one considers a “quantum particle,” because there is no rigidity with fixed boundary. Here we have a discovery of “soft mass” that has no equivalent in the material world. Newton’s laws of motion do not apply to it. Electromagnetic laws apply only to a special quantum particle called “electron.” Different laws apply to extremely diffused quantum particle called “photon” of light.

To call quantum particles of different types as “soft mass,” and associate with them the property of inertia in a general way, is the logical thing to do as hinted at A Logical Approach to Theoretical Physics. But this is a very novel idea in Physics. So far it has not been acceptable to physicists. I have been laughed at or ignored for suggesting this idea on Quora.com.

The nature of matter is, essentially, being “rigid with a fixed boundary.” As matter loses its rigidity and fixedness of boundary, for example, in the quantum state, it loses it meaning, and is incorrectly replaced by the idea of energy.

The Cyclic Universe

Reference: The Universe and Physical Elements

The basic model of the universe may be described as cycles within cycles within cycles. The earlier is the cycle the larger, lighter and more encompassing it is. The later is the cycle the smaller, denser and more limited it is. The evolution takes its course from earlier to later cycles.

Prior to any evolution there may simply be the impulse to evolve as described in The Creation Hymn of Rig Veda. Even gods came later. The universe being cyclic means that any “creation” is, essentially, a type of change. The idea that “God created this world” can only mean that God evolved into this world. God and this world are one and the same universe.

The earliest cycle shall have the longest, continuous duration; they will form the background without a boundary. In comparison, the later cycles shall appear increasingly discrete within that background. Total continuity of the background without variation is equivalent to infinite speed since speed appears only when there is discreteness. Therefore, as evolution occurs towards smaller but more numerous cycles the speed slows down. As cycles become smaller, they also appear increasingly condensed, viscous or solid.

.

The Physical Dimension

In the physical dimension, this evolution appears in the form of the electromagnetic spectrum. With evolution of this spectrum, the wavelength decreases while the frequency increases. The electromagnetic energy gradually condenses finally taking the appearance of solid matter. This whole spectrum is evident in the structure of the atom, where solid matter appears at the nucleus in the center far from atom’s boundary.

Matter would be the ultimate condition appearing at the end of evolution of the electromagnetic spectrum. One would expect the electromagnetic wave to be gradually decreasing in speed with increasing frequency. This speed may appear to be nearly constant around the frequency of visible light in the inertial frame of reference (the perspective of matter) as postulated by Einstein.  But the “speed of light” is obviously not constant over the whole electromagnetic spectrum.

The physical matter, in a way, is the uppermost visible crust of the universe behind which the enormity of universe lies. In our ignorance, we believe this material crust to be the whole of universe. We even call it the physical universe. As we come to know more of this universe through science and yoga, our perception is improving.

The uppermost cycle is the most stretched out and least dense as a substance. We may call this the background of Space. It forms the ultimate reference for all other cycles, which we see progressing within this background. We call this progression Time.

.

The Spiritual Dimension

The impulse to evolve prior to any evolution may be considered the spark that accompanies the evolution all the way. It makes the light move and electrons whiz around the nucleus of an atom. This is the spiritual dimension underlying all motion. It is the spirit underlying the evolution from space to matter. It is what we have been describing as energy.

At the uppermost reaches we have pure, raw energy that we associate with the gods. As this energy condenses, it first appears as the self-animation of light and electrons. This energy then evolves into the complex motion within the DNA molecule and the cells. The cells then evolve into the plant and animal kingdoms. The motion gradually evolves from insentient simplicity to sentient reaction. The reaction evolves in its selectivity in response to increasingly complex conditions. The selective response evolves into analytical observation and considered response to the incredibly complex environment. And finally, it evolves as intelligence  in the humans.

The spiritual dimension that started out as an impulse to evolve, finally evolves into self-animated, complex and intelligent action, which we call life. Thus, intelligence and life are later developments. Intelligence didn’t exist in the beginning. But it exists now after much trial and error, as the peak of evolution.

But there are greater stages ahead of us. The Garden of Eden never existed in the past. It lies in the future.

The evolution continues.

Restoring the Vedas

Lecture series delivered December 23 – 30, 2011

Restoring the Vedas (Part 1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTTqkxTVKYc (15:34)

The first commentary on the Vedas was Brahmanas, and the next was Upanishads. Vedas are eternal, they have always been there. In a sense, THE VEDAS represent a fully assimilated universal matrix of knowledge, of which the individual mental matrix is a part. They are connected through meditation.

.

Restoring the Vedas (Part 2)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMLyRfnckBU (15:28)

Even when not all knowledge is spelled out in the Vedic texts, the seeds of knowledge are there. From those seeds the knowledge has been evolving. According to Vedas the real knowledge is that which can be used to rise from mortality to immortality. Immortality is the highest attainment.

.

Restoring the Vedas (Part 3)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcciM-TpMwg (15:30)

Immortality has something to do with the physical being. This physical being breaks its limits. When the limits are broken it opens out to the light. It becomes very wide in its consciousness that is infinite. This is Vedic immortality according to Sri Aurobindo.

As far as I can see, the physical body has never achieved immortality. But one may say that a person, while living, who has attained the level of awarenes of Nirakar Brahman has attained immortality. The physical body may die, but he has knowingly become one with the living universe.

.

Restoring the Vedas (Part 4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWCELJUi_k4 (14:25)

The difference between outer being and the inner (psychic) being is that the outer being accumulates knowledge, but the inner being assimilates knowledge. In this universe there are cycles within cycles within cycles. The topmost (broadest) cycle that contains all the other cycles is the closest to immortality. When the topmost cycle within one is integrated (assimilated) with all the cycles that it contains than one has reached the ultimate depth of immortality.

.

Restoring the Vedas (Part 5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K02shufBWcM (15:03)

It is not just the immortality of the spiritual being, or the mental being that one is after. The ultimate immortality that Vedas are after, is the immortality of the whole body-mind-spirit system. The body must also be part of that immortality. This is central to the understanding of the Vedas. It appears that evolution is moving in the direction of the immortality of the body also.

.

Restoring the Vedas (Part 6)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLHEsJsvoZ4 (15:04)

Ignorance is not something original. It has been created; and, therefore, it can also be ended. Ignorance occurs and bondage is created during the process of evolution because it is all based on trial and error. And it is upon reviewing the trial and error process and sorting it out that knowledge comes about and ignorance and bondages are dissolved. The purpose of being on earth is to immortalize this whole earth system and not to run away from it.

Restoring the Vedas (Part 7)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_aUq76anB0 (15:08)

The Vedic rishis had reached this point where even body could be immortalized, but the evolutionary process does not end there. The task is the immortalization of all the body-mind-spirit systems in an integrated form. Veda talks about widening of the consciousness of the physical being. Emphasis on this idea is the newness of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga. The evolution must lead to a new kind of a body-mind-spirit system that is immortal. The lecture ends here.

Introduction to the Vedas Part-1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJfWYlNT3VE (25:32)

Vedas contain the highest knowledge. “Rig” of Rig Veda means Hymn of praise that comes out of the human being in greatest ecstasy of wonder. The Sanskrit language was highly developed by the time the Vedas were composed. The Vedas were composed in poetic form, which shows a high level of expression. They are a composition of sounds and words.

.

Introduction to the Vedas Part-2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVtASgQusz8 (25:32)

The Gayatri Mantra is a great example of this high level poetry. Every word of a Vedic mantra has a meaning. This meaning must be understood. The Vedic Rishis discovered that this physical universe is incredibly vast. There are dimensions that are even larger than the “physical” dimension. This is the intermediate universe. Behind this vast intermediate universe there is an even higher universe.  But you must examine and test these universes for yourself. There are methods by which capacities can be developed to experience these universe. The Vedic rishis had made a great discovery of this method called “meditation.” According to this discovery, our intellect is capable of developing thoughts. But we do not fully know the power of thinking. Thinking has many kinds of powers, and these powers can be developed at higher and higher levels.

.

Introduction to the Vedas Part-3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4F5mL7YHQ0 (29:12)

Thoughts have different pitches like the sounds have and these different pitches have different effects. The effects are basically in terms of the removal of confusions and the creation of clear ideas and flowing images. Meditation is a process of repeating certain ideas in a slow, regulated and steady motion with complete concentration, so that ideas which are not relevant to the thought under consideration, are not allowed to enter. Then see how this thought flows like a river towards its goal. When this is done, every meditation discovers its target. Every meditation has a target—an object to be discovered. It is aiming for a clarity about something—an as-isness of some doubt, perplexity or confusion. The Vedic rishis made the discovery that we have within us a capacity called the “intellect”, and that capacity can be utilized by concentration, and it can go to the target, which is supreme light.

Literal word-by-word meaning of Gayatri Mantra:

  • Devasya: Divine, of the supreme Lord.
  • Dhimahi: We meditate upon. Concentrate.
  • Dhiyo: The intellect.
  • Yo: May this (light).
  • Nah: Our.
