Remedy of Havingness

Summary

Remedy of Havingness is bringing back the sense of equilibrium, or oneness. To have this sense of oneness at all times is the natural goal of life. All processes that improve a person’s abilities must be directed toward this goal. Therefore, in a havingness process, a person should be able to push things into himself and his body and throw things away from himself and his body, or accept and reject things, with equal ease.

A person who is obsessively outflowing, or obsessively inflowing, would require his havingness to be remedied. The Step IV of SOP 8 (Expanded Give & Take) is processed with this equilibrium in mind. Inherent to this processing is the concept and principle of doing things by gradient scales. For example, one starts mocking up in smaller quantity and gradually increases that quantity. Even when mocking up something, one may start with a vague idea, and then gradually build up the mock up with greater details.

Exteriorization by Remedy of Havingness is an effort to handle fixation on the body. People may not be fixated on their body even when they do not find themselves dramatically outside the body. They may just have a wide, expanded viewpoint while still centered on the body. There is the sense of equilibrium, or oneness, with the body. Process R2-63, Accept-Reject (see page 158, Creation of Human Ability) may also be used to establish the sense of equilibrium in the person.

Hubbard says, “Any time the preclear begins to feel dopey or “boil off’ he has either run too long on a flow in one direction….” All processing must be applied in such a way that the feeling of equilibrium and oneness is maintained as much as possible. When a person has erased a lot of facsimiles, he may feel out of sorts. He should then apply the processes that are specifically designed to remedy havingness, until he regains the equilibrium.

Hubbard says, “However, it is not true that Havingness is the entire key to the Human mind. Havingness is the “gimmick” or “weenie” for which the game is played, and having something is very much like winning.” As I mentioned above, maintaining the feeling of equilibrium and oneness is the natural goal of life. Life is a game, and all games have this goal too. Havingness processes are quite general. Specific processes may provide faster resolution to specific aberrations, but they need to be supported by Havingness processes. Even the top activity of postulatingness requires the principle of oneness for equilibrium. Consult the text for this section for further details on Havingness processes and their commands

End of Cycle Processing
This is a cousin process to the Remedy of Havingness. This process is used when a person is not-ising (denying) existence. This process is described in the last three paragraphs of the text for this section.

Havingness is the feeling of equilibrium and oneness with the universe. Achieving and maintaining this feeling is the natural goal of life. Life is a game, and all games have this goal too. Havingness processes are quite general. Specific processes may provide faster resolution to specific aberrations, but they need to be supported by Havingness processes. Even the top activity of postulatingness requires the principle of oneness for equilibrium.

Summary

Hubbard says, “By havingness we mean owning, possessing, being capable of commanding, positioning, taking charge of objects, energies or spaces… [It] can be simply defined as ARC with the environment.” Havingness is the concept in Scientology that comes closest to the feeling of oneness or equilibrium. In the absence of havingness, there is the feeling of trying to reach but not being able to reach. This appears as fixation. The remedying of havingness is the overcoming of fixations to achieve some sort of equilibrium or oneness.

Hubbard says, “Just why a thetan should get himself so completely snarled up in energy might be an entire mystery to anyone who did not realize that a thetan has to cut down his knowingness and his total presence in order to have a game.” This statement presents an anomaly. The whole purpose of having a game is to engage in an activity towards attaining havingness or an equilibrium. Cutting down of knowingness would be moving away from equilibrium. This does not make sense.

Unknowable-knowable is the ultimate dichotomy. One is trying to know because there is something he does not know, and this is generating a lack of equilibrium. So there is already a game. All knowingness is generated through postulates. To know, one postulates so that greater equilibrium or oneness is attained.

But, Hubbard starts with the postulate that there is already an equilibrium in the form of an all-knowing thetan. So, knowingness must be cut down to generate disequilibrium, in order for the thetan to have a game to attain equilibrium.

Here is the fundamental anomaly in Hubbard’s Theta-MEST theory. Hubbard is rejecting the Unknowable, while postulating a theory. He does not see that he is postulating a theory because of the fact of Unknowable. Since the Unknowable is already there, one need not postulate unknowingness. One should simply postulate knowingness towards attaining oneness. The actual game is the recognition of the lack of oneness (anomaly) and resolving it.

Hubbard says, “The awareness of awareness unit builds space to cut down knowingness.” But when one looks at space one realizes that it is the extent of substance, where the substance can be thought, energy or matter. There is no empty space. The space may be appear to be empty of matter, but it is not empty of energy or thought. When one makes a postulate, he is putting thought out there and that thought has extents, which is its space. So, when one is looking at space, one is looking at a postulate. The idea that space cuts down knowingness is false.

Hubbard says, “Space makes it necessary, then, to look at something in order to know about it.” But space is not nothing. Space is something; and one can look at space by considering it. The idea that one looks through space is false. Looking is becoming aware of one’s postulate. The idea of “nothing” is a postulate.

Hubbard says, “The next thing a thetan does to cut down his knowingness is to create energy and to pass it to other thetans and to bring in the energy of other thetans so as to get a duration and a time-span.” Energy is condensed thought. As one looks at energy more closely it starts to de-condense into thought. The very idea of another thetan is a thought that is condensed into a concept. Therefore, an individual thetan is a unit of energy. To the degree such individual thetans are considered to be fixed they have duration, or a time-span.

Hubbard says, “If the thetan is successful and obtains a game in this wise, he continues on with this modus operandi of having a game, and when he does not have a game he simply cuts his knowingness down once more.” Basically, a thetan is not-knowing by condensing thought into energy, and adding that energy to itself. This is introversion. To Hubbard, the MEST universe is overwhelming. So, he introverts to have a game.

Hubbard says, “Of course, he reaches a point eventually where he does not get a game simply by cutting down his knowingness, and eventually assumes a fairly fixed, stupid, aspect.” Of course, the introversion leads ultimately to total fixation, stupidity, and no games. On the other hand, if one extroverts and faces the reality of the MEST universe, he finds fixations to dissolve, which, if done successfully, would result in increasing knowingness.

The fixations, at first, appears as sensations. As one feels these sensations and looks at them more closely, they de-condense into emotions. As one looks at these emotions more closely, they de-condese into finer details. He realizes that he must make effort to understand. The effort involves thinking to decipher symbols that make up the details. Hubbard refers to digesting the meaning of symbols as eatingness. But meanings of symbols contain more symbols to be deciphered. Hubbard refers to such proliferation of symbols as sexingness. As one persists in looking more closely grasping all the details, he finally breaks through the whole mystery of the sensations. Thus comes about the dissolution of fixation, and the perception of oneness. This is the know-to-mystery scale applied in the direction of extroversion from not-knowing to knowing.

Hubbard says, “At first one simply knows.” This is a false datum because the only option it provides is to not-know through introversion. Because of this false datum, Hubbard applies the know-to-mystery scale in the direction of introversion from knowing to not-knowing. The fact is: At first there is Unknowable, and one contacts it in the form of sensations through one’s sense organs. It is the assimilation of sensations, as described in the paragraph above, that leads to perception. The assimilation of sensations assures the oneness of havingness.

In the game of life there is always something more to know. It is only when one is fixated on one game, and thinks he knows all there is to know, that he runs into a scarcity of games. Where you see fixation, you will always find anomalies in the form of discontinuity (missing data), inconsistency (contradictory data), and disharmony (arbitrary data). As long as there are anomalies, there is always something more to know. So, there would always be games and the potential for greater havingness.

The possibility of games reduce as one becomes fixated. A person becomes fixated when he stops looking closely at what is there. His attention has become too scattered and he cannot focus it. Hubbard says, “This process [remedy of havingness] is done by asking the preclear to mock up something and pull it in, or mock up something and throw it away… Tell him to mock up eight anchor points in the form of the corners of a cube around him and pull them in upon himself. Ask him to do it several more times, and he immediately brightens up and becomes very happy.” This process is simply making a person experience more closely whatever he is holding on to. He is doing so en masse. As he pulls stuff into him it frees up his attention to look at what else is out there. Same thing happens when he throws stuff away. Again, when you ask a person what he wouldn’t mind knowing, he would search through all the stuff he is holding on to. This will make him look at that stuff en masse more closely. This is what you want him to do.

A “black five” is a person who is heavily fixated and difficult to process. His knowingness has become really condensed into a belief. In order to improve him you have to get him lie about things knowingly, so he can regain the ability to postulate. When he willing to know things then he can have games. Then he would be able to mock up and remedy havingness. For details on the process commands to remedy havingness, you may read the original materials.

Comments

The fundamental idea underlying the remedy of havingness is to restore a person’s willingness to know so he can get back into playing the game of life. One plays the game of life by looking at the sensations from sense organs more closely. This exercise makes the person go through the stages of the know-to-mystery scale before the sensations are fully assimilated, and an equilibrium is maintained. This helps the person overcome his fixations and realize the sense of havingness.

The viewpoint of the person expands, and his whole beingness starts to become increasingly finer. His sense of discrimination increases and he is able to take on more challenging games.

Summary

Hubbard says, “A game consists of freedoms, barriers, and purposes… [It is] any state of beingness wherein exist awareness, problems, havingness and freedom (separateness) each in some degree.” In scientific terms, when a system is disturbed, there is activity to bring it back into equilibrium. So, a game may be seen as a system with a number of variables interacting with each other to reach the state of equilibrium.

Hubbard says, “The goal of Scientology is the rehabilitation of the game.” A person is prevented by his fixations to participate in the game of life. His fixations makes him think that he knows what is necessary. 

Hubbard says, “Auditing is that process of bringing a balance between freedom and barriers.” Auditing is supposed to make a person aware of his fixations, that are cutting across his freedom of choice. 

Hubbard says, “Auditing is a game of exteriorization versus havingness.” Exteriorization is the release from fixation on the body; whereas, havingness of bodies is the feeling of oneness with bodies. According to Hubbard, the remedying of havingness of bodies “will clear away universes in which a person is stuck.”

Hubbard says, “The preclear is usually close to a no-game condition.” No-game condition is “have for self and can’t have for others.” Auditing handles this condition by helping the person reach an equilibrium between freedoms and barriers.

Comments

The condition of equilibrium is stated as ONENESS in Buddhism, where oneness is defined as the state of continuity, consistency and harmony. Oneness acts as the constraint that harnesses the arbitrariness of freedom.

However, this condition of oneness was rejected by Hubbard in Scientology because he could not tolerate the idea of self dissolving into oneness as in Buddhism. Hubbard’s fixation on self limited the effectiveness of auditing. Hubbard tried to establish an ideal condition with the concept of HAVINGNESS through games.

SCN 8-8008: The Six Levels of Processing

Summary

This addition was made to the book 3 years later in 1955. Earlier auditing approach, apparently, was very controlling, The auditing approach was relaxed with this issue. The following describes the processing as done by the person using the subject clearing approach.

Level One

At the beginning of a session certain rudiments are established so that the session goes smoothly. It requires being well-oriented in the environment one is in. The person knows what he wants to accomplish in that session and how he is going to proceed. He follows the discipline of subject clearing to get settled into the session. He is fully aware of all his thoughts and eager to proceed. 

He then runs Opening Procedure of 8-C (see R2-16 on page 44, Creation of Human Ability). This procedure is about examining, communicating with and owning things. The person moves around randomly touches various objects. He then selects precise spots on objects to touch and does so. Lastly, he repeatedly selects a spot, moves to it, decides when to touch and when to let go. This process is run until the person is perceiving the physical universe uniformly and is able to contact it.

Level Two 

The level two has a series of processes that are run in populated places. The person spots things that have some capability of postulating. He may then realize that he has that capability too. He then practices seeing objects as they are by differentiating them from one other. He then spots people too as different individualities. This may help him recognize the uniqueness of his own frame of reference as an individual. The “not-know” process then helps the person recognize some of the preconceptions about people and things that he might be carrying.

Level Three 

On level three, a person executes different steps in quiet places that help him extrovert his attention and assume viewpoints that exist out there external to him. Thoughts do not have to be inside the head or emanating from the head. They can exist out there on their own. It could be the intention or purpose associated with an object. He just has to recognize this. Thinking a thought in an object is to think from the viewpoint of that object. One can choose between two things from the viewpoint of that object. Thus, using an external viewpoint, a person can make choices and decisions.

Level Four 

On level four, the person runs Opening Procedure by Duplication (see R2-17 on page 47, Creation of Human Ability). On the first part of this procedure the person examines, communicates with and owns two dissimilar objects. He then places these objects several feet apart so that he can walk between them and pick them up without bending over. He then examines the properties of the two objects alternately. He does this with full attention each time newly until he realizes the influence of preconceptions.

Level Five 

On level five, the person realizes what clarity is like as opposed to confusion. There were things in school that were not clear. He had to memorize them though still confused. When there is no understanding, there is a scarcity of communication. To remedy this, he first visualizes what it is like to be confused. He then starts visualizing all the things that has been confused about. Then he starts spotting the actual confusion that he would like to clear up. Lastly, he mocks up family members and the people he has depended upon. He notices the confusions related to them. This level makes the person realize what clarity is like without confusions and preconceptions.

Level Six 

By the time a person reaches this level, his attention is quite extroverted. He now follows the processes of Route One (see page 33, Creation of Human Ability). The process R1-4 helps a person become aware of his fixation on the body. On the process R1-5, the person looks more closely at things that are occupying his attention, as contrasted with having the attention totally free. The process R1-6 gets the person free his attention from other things that may be fixing his attention. The process R1-7 also gets him to unfix his attention. The process R1-8 makes the person start looking at new things, now that his attention is no longer fixated. The process R1-9 gets the person to look around the various phenomena of the universe on a gradient. The process R1-10 helps the person gain new perspective on things he has been avoiding throughout his life. The process R1-11 gets a person to recognize anomalies and look at them more closely until they resolve. The process R1-12 helps a person realize that he can postulate towards recognizing oneness of things. The process R1-13 gets a person to look at his past conditioning more closely until it starts to resolve. The process R1-14 gets a person to look at his fixed modes of thinking and recognize fixed ideas. Lastly, the process R1-15 gets the person look at the universe broadly and start recognizing more basic anomalies.

Comments

On these levels, a person is gradually extroverting his attention, and developing the ability to observe with clarity without confusions and preconceptions, to a level where he can start solving actual anomalies in the environment.

Summary

These definitions are updated with the use of subject clearing from those provided in the book Scientology 8-8008.

THETAN: This term designates the beingness of a person. This is what he believes himself to be. Whatever identity he assumes, he is that. He may become confused about who is his; but at any moment, he is capable of postulating who he is. To believe that he is made up of some core characteristic that is immortal at some level, is a fixation. It is a common aberration.

AUDITOR: Auditor is the person who, like a therapist, helps a preclear become clear in his mental state. But having an auditor always impacts one’s ability to think for oneself negatively. Fortunately, most processes in Scientology can be applied in a mantra-like fashion to oneself in a meditative or contemplative setting. Use of an auditor is recommended only when a person is a beginner in Scientology, or when he is incapable of applying Scientology processes to himself.

LOCATION: A location is a postulate of where something is. A thetan postulates itself to be located at the center of the skull where all perceptions converge.  But a thetan can postulate itself to be anywhere inside or outside the body. The thetan can believe itself to be the body with its center of attention inside the skull. But this is a fixation and a common aberration. A thetan is not a thing that has location. A thetan postulates things that have locations.

SELF-DETERMINISM: Self-determinism is the thetan’s ability to postulate without becoming fixated. He can change his postulate as needed to conform to the principle of oneness. The thetan itself is a postulate. So the beingness called thetan itself can change as needed to conform to the principle of oneness.  Thus, self-determinism may be defined as the ability to maintain the principle of oneness. Note: Oneness is the continuity, consistency and harmony of postulates. This principle is not explicitly acknowledged in Scientology.

ILLUSION: Illusion is an altered perception of what exists in reality.

REALITY: Reality is the that which conforms to the principle of oneness. It is the perception from which all inconsistencies have been resolved. This defines the reality of the universe. It is continuous consistent and harmonious.

DELUSION: Delusion is continuing belief in things that are not consistent with reality.

CERTAINTY: A person’s fixations may be looked upon as certainties because they are providing him stability by keeping his confusion at bay. But if a slight disturbance throws that person into confusion then his certainties are of the nature of fixations. True certainties are part of one’s awareness and sense of confidence.

KNOWINGNESS: Knowingness is what gives a person confidence. He feels one with the reality of the universe.

ABERRATION: Aberration manifests when there is violation of oneness. It is based on anomalies, such as, discontinuity (missing data), inconsistency (contradictory data), or disharmony (arbitrary data).

THETA PERCEPTION: The reality is sensed through the sense organs. These sensations, when assimilated, result in perceptions. The perception consists of size, odor, tactile, sound, color, etc. Theta perception is the complete assimilation of sensations, such that, there are no alterations or distortions. The assimilation of sensations requires their de-condensation. On this depends the accuracy of the perception of the universe out there. On the accuracy of perception depends the ability to reason, and to resolve problems.

MEST PERCEPTION: It is actually a raw unassimilated sensation. It is the “condensed” event that was sensed. It is like a recording because it is not yet de-condensed and assimilated. Its details, therefore, cannot be perceived. The processing is all about de-condensing and assimilating these “recordings.”

ORIENTATION: Orientation is knowingness of locations relative to each other on some reference scale or grid.

RIDGES: Ridges are relatively fixed patterns that appear in a flow. They continue to be there in a potential form even after the flow has stopped. Fixed ideas, prejudices, bias, and other fixations are all ridges.

FACSIMILES: Facsimiles are raw sensations that have remained unassimilated because of their complexity. They are still in the same form in which they were first received. They are yet to be assimilated and converted into perceptions.

END OF TERMINAL: This is the terminal at the other end of a communication line from you. It could be your car, or a loved one, that you are in constant communication with. When the car is stolen, or the loved one dies, the end terminal is no longer there. Since the person can no longer flow communication to that terminal, the flow reverts back to him. In other words, he introverts. The feeling of loss and grief is, therefore, an introversion. In creative processing, the end terminals can be mocked up and the flow resumed. This handles many difficulties.

ASTRAL BODIES: This is an explanation of phenomena, such as, out-of-body experience and life after death. Scientology explains these same phenomena differently.

ELECTRONICS: Electronics is a branch of physics and engineering that focuses on the behavior, flow, and control of electrons and other electrically charged particles. In Scientology, the mental phenomena is modeled after the phenomena observed in electronics.

TERMINALS: A terminal is the point of current entry to, or point of current departure from, any conducting component in an electric circuit. By manipulating the resistance of conducting components the flow of current through the circuit can be controlled. In Scientology, the ridges and facsimiles are looked upon as conducting components that control the flow of thought. In short, a person’s fixations get activated by the person’s environment and control the flow of his thoughts. 

THE HUMAN SOUL: The beingness of a person.

MYSTICISM: Mysticism is popularly known as becoming one with God or the Absolute. Scientifically, it would be realizing the oneness (continuity, consistency and harmony) of reality.

FREEDOM: Freedom lies in recognizing the principle of oneness as the overall constraint.

SLAVERY: Slavery lies in the fixation of awareness.

THE HUMAN BODY: The human body provides an overview of human beingness. Underlying human body are postulates, genetic programming, ridges, bones and muscles.

THE HUMAN MIND: The human mind is the maturing of a long series of genetic programming, where it can turn around and modify itself.

STIMULUS-RESPONSE: This is the push-button aspect of the genetic programming, that still influences the human mind.

THE REACTIVE MIND: The reactive mind refers strictly to the stimulus-response aspect of the human mind. It highlights the fixations in the operation of the human mind.

THE SOMATIC MIND: This is the aspect of the genetic programming that applies to the body. It is also natural like the upper end programming of the human mind.

SCIENTOLOGY: The science of knowing how to know. It is continuing on this path through subject clearing.

KNOWING HOW TO KNOW: It is being free of fixations and continuing to recognize and resolve anomalies.

THETA CLEAR: A being who knows that the beingness is not immortal—that it can change—even disappear and be recreated again.

CLEARED THETA CLEAR: Operates purely on postulates. There is no attention on beingness at all.

A THETAN EXTERIOR: A person who is neither fixated on his body, nor on his self.

The above are Scientology definitions, which were proposed by Hubbard, and which are now updated with the help of Subject Clearing. These definitions may be updated further as progress is made in knowing how to know.
