Knowing How to Know

Time

This is an expansion upon the essay Beginning.

.

Cycle, Time and Time Track

TIME is an inherent characteristic of a cycle. It implies the persistence of something from beginning to end, whether it is desire, beingness, or awareness.

The essence persists while the form may change. Thus, beingness and awareness persist throughout a cycle while their manifestations as identities and viewpoints may go through various changes as the cycle progresses. These identities and viewpoints may stay in memory stamped with a sense of their relative occurrence. We may refer to this sense as TIME, and such a memory as TIME TRACK.

Thus, a “time track” of detailed incidents involving identities and viewpoints may exist in the memory.

.

Impressions and Assimilation

The impressions of the time track gets fixed in place when they have not been thoroughly viewed. These are elements that are only partially assimilated. When those elements are thoroughly viewed and fully assimilated the “memory impressions” transforms into “knowledge.”

The incidental details of memory dissolve into conceptual understanding when viewed thoroughly.

You may not know in detail what you ate for breakfast on 4th of July, 1987 but your attention is not fixed there. There is nothing there that needs to be known. The details of that moment have become irrelevant. The details of that breakfast may be approximated from the knowledge of that time period, but there is nothing mysterious that will demand your attention to be fixed there.

.

Memory and Recall

If one cannot spot any incidents on one’s time track then it is quite possible that all incidents of that period have been properly assimilated. But it is also possible that one is being prevented from perceiving the incidents of that time period because of a lack of assimilation somewhere else.

It appears that the periods on the time track may get assimilated with respect to the viewpoint held, but viewpoints during different periods do not get assimilated.

Not looking a certain period of the time track from the same viewpoint held at that time, may produce illusions. It has been said that the most fundamental illusion is TIME, and this essay may point to something similar.

Glossary

Time
Time is an inherent characteristic of a cycle. It implies the persistence of the cycle from beginning to end, whether it is desire, beingness, or awareness.

Time Track
The time track is the sense of relative occurrence.

Impression
A memory impression in the mind is made of associations that are relatively fixed. These are perceptual elements that are only partially assimilated. Upon full assimilation they have the fluidity of knowledge.

Recall
If one cannot recall a specific memory, then it is quite possible that the memory has been fully assimilated into knowledge; and it would have to be reconstructed carefully for the time under consideration. But it is also possible that a lack of assimilation elsewhere is preventing the recall of this time.

.

Beingness, Desire & Knowledge

A person is a being. That beingness is there, essentially, to satisfy some desire.

The key characteristic of beingness that is most valued is INDIVIDUALITY. This concept of individuality boils down to “an indivisible unit (of consciousness) that is unique.”

The INDIVIDUALITY is based on the uniqueness of the desire it is designed to pursue.

Each one of us is an individual. Each one of us is pursuing a unique “desire” that defines us. Though it is rare to witness an individuality defined by the single pursuit of a pure desire. Such individualities stand out because they go far in accomplishing their desire. Gandhi would be such a pure desire; and so would be Hitler. Here we are simply talking about a desire and not passing a judgment on that desire.

The knowledge disseminated by an individuality is obviously designed to serve that basic desire that defines it. There is no question about it. But, what I posit here is that there is “knowledge in itself,” which may then be moulded by the desire-bound-individuality for its purpose.

Knowledge may be biased by desire.

Thus, any person outputs knowledge that is slanted by the beingness of that person. There is no knowledge from any single source that would be free of slant, whether it is Hitler or Gandhi. But underlying that slant there exists “knowledge in itself.”

The biggest hurdle to perceiving that “knowledge in itself” is not the slant put on it by its “source”; though that can be a significant hurdle.

The biggest hurdle to perceiving that “knowledge in itself” is the the beingness that the viewer is. When one can rise above one’s own beingness then one may perceive that “knowledge in itself.”

“Knowledge in itself” exists for no beingness.

.

The Null Viewpoint

It seems that “spiritual” and “physical” are not independent of each other. The idea that physical universe is created by God seems to be an assumption that occurs in most religions. On the other hand the idea that spiritual consciousness has evolved out of chemical interactions seems to be asserted by many who reject religion.

A third idea may be posited that both physical and spiritual universes are subsets of a larger universe. This super set of all possible universes may be referred to as the Universe of Consideration. Please refer to the essay The Nature of Consideration.

Both “spiritual” and “physical” are different aspects of a Universe of Consideration.

The Universe of Consideration may be looked upon as a cycle. This universe includes all that is spiritual and physical and anything else that may be considered. What lies outside this universe cannot be known or viewed from within the universe. Please refer to the essay Beginning.

A null viewpoint is posited as THAT which is beyond this universe of consideration. This idea is similar to what is referred to as Brahma in Hinduism, or Nirvana in Buddhism. It is beyond any beingness, awareness, space, time, energy and matter.  Please refer to the essay The Nature of Existence.

The term “null viewpoint”  is just a projection of the consideration of viewpoint that exists within this universe. Probably, the null viewpoint has nothing to do with a viewpoint. I am positing the term “null viewpoint” as a placeholder just like the placeholder “zero” in mathematics. We could use a different term, such as “osh kosh,” instead of the term “null viewpoint,” and it would make no philosophical difference.

No definition may be stated for null viewpoint because no logic is applicable outside of the universe. Logic exists only within the universe of considerations, as it is based upon the associations among considerations. A definition cannot avoid the use of beingness, awareness, space, time, energy and matter. Thus, any attempt to impose the logic of the universe to comprehend THAT which is beyond the universe would fail. That is the inherent weakness of any attempted definition.

The nature of null viewpoint cannot be determined from any ideas about how this universe came to be. The creation of this universe cannot be determined  from a viewpoint based on this universe. From such a viewpoint, this universe would always appear to be there.

We may only say that the null viewpoint is “absence of consideration.” Beyond that any idea about the nature of null viewpoint would only be… well… er!… a consideration.

For practical purposes a NULL VIEWPOINT may be considered to be a “point of view” that has no fixidity, stuckness, or permanence to it. It is a viewpoint that is continually coming into being and dissolving.

A NULL VIEWPOINT may be looked upon as a totally fresh viewpoint each time with no prior considerations, and hence no prior beingness.

.

Philosophical Beginning

To have a universe it must be considered first. And it must be considered from Unknowable that is beyond consideration.

NOTE: No definition for Unknowable is provided here other than that it is a view without any prior consideration.

A universe would consist of beingness and the awareness of that beingness. Unknowable (Nirvana) would be beyond any consideration of beingness and awareness.

Note: Here the use of the word “awareness” implies “awareness of beingness.” Some philosophies use the word awareness in the sense of awareness of awareness. That meaning is not implied here.

The universe would start with the assumption of BEINGNESS. The moment universe comes into BEING it becomes AWARE of itself. At that moment beingness transforms into IDENTITY, and awareness transforms into VIEWPOINT.

Note: The use of the word “viewpoint” implies a point of view, or considerations about something, such as, “a viewpoint of women.” Using “viewpoint” strictly in the sense of a location one is viewing from is a narrower interpretaton.

From the viewpoint:

  1. This identity has dimensions that define it. That is its SPACE.

  2. This identity persists. That persistence is its TIME.

  3. This identity appears to be active. That activity is ENERGY.

  4. This identity impinges through senses. That impingement is MATTER.

The universe, which comes into existence, is a system of IDENTITY, VIEWPOINT, SPACE, TIME, ENERGY and MATTER.

These components may be regarded as concrete or “physical.”

The corresponding abstractions in terms of BEINGNESS, AWARENESS, DEFINITION, PERSISTENCE, ACTIVITY and IMPINGEMENT may be regarded as “spiritual.”

“Physical” and “spiritual” are two aspects of the same system.

.

Addition Nov 14, 2022:

(1) For a viewpoint, which is part of a cycle, what is beyond the cycle is UNKNOWABLE.

(2) The universe is the superset of all cycles. According to the Vedas, the universe is also cyclic.

(3) We are part of the cycle of the universe. Our viewpoint lies within the universe.

(4) We can never know what is beyond the universe. This is UNKNOWABLE.

(5) We may only speculate about the UNKNOWABLE. That speculation becomes knowable, but the UNKNOWABLE remains unknowable.

(6) What we refer to as GOD is UNKNOWABLE. All that we attribute to GOD are our speculations only. We know these speculations only and not GOD.

Consideration
To consider is to examine what is there and give it a shape through visualization. A consideration is the shape given as a structure of associations. The moment something is triggered by the unknowable, it is defined in the mind by considerations.

The Nature of Consideration

A consideration is a pattern of relationships in the mental matrix. The moment something is perceived, it is defined in the mind by considerations. Considerations are grouped into concepts. Concepts are labeled as “key words”.

Components of the Universe

The route of Physics seems to be the considerations of matter, energy, space and time. The route of Metaphysics seems to be the considerations concerning what is there. Considerations are ubiquitous, self-evident and axiomatic.

The major components of this universe seem to be matter, energy, space, and time and considerations.

To get some clue to this universe we need to look at both physics and metaphysics. These two subjects are intertwined with each other.

.

Definition

Dictionary defines a consideration as a careful thought, a decision, or something that is to be kept in mind in making a decision, evaluating facts, etc. Thus, considerations come about as one associates what is there.

The concept of consideration is so basic that it may be said that the human consideration of unknowable, is what finds its expression in the concept of God.

.

Structure

A consideration, such as, “There is God,” can be perceived to exist.

  1. This considerations has a form, which distinguishes it. That is a harmonic of SPACE.
  2. This consideration has substance. That is a harmonic of ENERGY.
  3. This consideration becomes solid as it gets fixated. That is a harmonic of MATTER.
  4. This consideration evolves and persists. That is a harmonic of TIME.

Thus, considerations seem to have the aspects of matter, energy, space, and time.

On the other hand.

Matter, energy, space, and time appear to be considerations underlying what is out there.

.

Characteristics

Some of the characteristics of considerations are as follows:

(1) A consideration tends to generate more considerations. For example, the idea of “beginning” is a consideration. It gives rise to the consideration of “before the beginning,” which generates inconsistency.

(2) The opposite considerations always seem to occur as a by-product of any consideration. For example, the consideration of “beginning” also seems to give rise to its opposite consideration of “end.”

(3) Widely different considerations may interact and generate a new consideration. For example, as one looks at the considerations of “beginning” and “end,” a third consideration of “change” seems to arise.

(4) Considerations seem to combine to generate more complex considerations. For example, from “change” arises the consideration of “time”, and that leads to the consideration of “cycle” (begin—change—end).

.

Generation

The consideration is triggered by something “out there.” That something is UNKNOWABLE because we know only THAT which is triggered.

That which is triggered is manifested and has a BEINGNESS.

Along with manifestation comes the consideration of AWARENESS.

This process gives rise to the basic consideration of CAUSE and EFFECT.

Along with this process comes the consideration of ABILITY.

The manifestation brings about the considerations of MATTER, ENERGY, SPACE and TIME.

We then connect with BEINGNESS the ABILITY to CONSIDER and become AWARE of MATTER, ENERGY, SPACE and TIME.

The idea of associating considerations to generate new considerations consists of the considerations of CONTINUITY, CONSISTENCY and HARMONY. This is the consideration of LOGIC. An infinity of complex considerations, then, arises.

The whole universe seems to be an outcome of considerations of what is there.

Concept
Origin: “something conceived.” A concept is an idea formed by mentally assimilating all the considerations about something.

Consideration
Origin: “to examine.” To consider is to examine what is there and give it a meaning by associating appropriate perceptual elements. The moment something is perceived, it is defined in the mind by considerations.

Key Word
A key word is a label given to a well-defined concept.
