Solving Real-Life Problems

Reference: The 12 Aspects of Mindfulness

Here is a step-by-step method for using thought experiments to solve real life problems.

(1) Use your experience

  • Consider the problem.
  • Look for previous explanations.
  • Try to eliminate all inconsistencies using the 12 aspects of mindfulness.
  1. Observe without getting influenced by your expectations and desire for answers.
  2. Observe things as they are, without assuming anything.
  3. If something is missing do not imagine something else in its place.
  4. If something does not make sense then do not explain it away.
  5. Use physical senses as well as mental sense to observe.
  6. Let the mind un-stack itself.
  7. Experience fully what is there.
  8. Do not suppress anything.
  9. Associate data freely.
  10. Do not get hung up on name and form.
  11. Contemplate thoughtfully.
  12. Let it all be effortless.

(2) Form a conjecture

  • State a simple hypothesis or conjecture no matter how unconventional it may appear.

(3) Deduce a prediction from that explanation

  • Predict consequences that may follow from that explanation.

(4) Test (Experiment)

  • Check for the opposite of each consequence to disprove the conjecture.

(5) Verify

  • Note that this can never absolutely verify (prove the truth of) the conjecture. It can only falsify the conjecture.
  • If the conjecture cannot be disproven then continue with step (1) until the complexity of the problem is adequately addressed.
  • If the conjecture is disproven then go back to step (2).

Interiorization & Exteriorization

Free8
Reference: What is Awareness, Scientifically?

In Scientology, INTERIORIZATION refers to a condition that has to do with “going into and becoming part of the body too fixedly.” EXTERIORIZATION is defined as “a state where the individual experiences being outside his body.”

But the experience of being outside the body is just a feeling. It is the sense of “I” that appears to be outside the body.  This sense is the “center of awareness” of the body-mind system. The mind extends from the body but way beyond it. Therefore, the body-mind system is way bigger than the body. The body is only a small part of it. The sense of “I,” or the “center of awareness,” can be anywhere in the body-mind system. When it locates itself outside the body, then, the person gets the idea that he is not merely a body.

Until then, maybe, the person thought that he is just that body because the body appeared to act as the center of awareness. It may be said that the person’s attention was actually fixed on the body but he was not aware of it. When that attention suddenly becomes unstuck, and the “center of awareness” moves outside the body, the person feels very liberated. This comes to him as a big surprise. He literally feels being outside the body. He thinks that something very special has happened. He feels a deep “spiritual awakening.”

INTERIORIZATION is the condition of attention being too fixed on the body. When that attention suddenly becomes unstuck the person feels very liberated. This feeling of liberation is called exteriorization.

Such “out-of-body” experiences are actually quite common, but they are random and uncontrolled. It just so happens that the person’s considerations shift in such a way that the “center of awareness” moves beyond the confines of the body. It, then, appears to the person that he is outside the body, while there is no physical separation. The feeling of exteriorization may go away just as suddenly as it had come. The person does not know what actually happened; but he remembers the brief experience and longs for it. After having such experience the person’s attention may get fixed on getting exterior to the body.

When a person’s attention is too fixed on separating “self” from the body, then it is just another form of INTERIORIZATION.

Scientology and other religions convince a person that he is an identity, or individuality, that is immortal, and which can operate outside the body permanently. This may sound crazy, but a person, who already believes in a God existing outside the universe, and a soul existing after death, can easily be convinced that he exists separate from the body.

In truth, the sense of “I” is not something physical that is separate from the body. The real anomaly is that the person’s viewpoint is narrow and his idea of “self” is limited to his body. This is an area that needs to be carefully subject cleared. See SUBJECT CLEARING STEP 7—Subject: SELF.

The simple truth lies in broadening the viewpoint of the person on the subject of self.

But the broader problem is fixation of attention. The attention could be fixed on the body, or on getting out of the body, or on salvation, or on attaining nirvana. The actual problem is the state of the attention, which happens to be introverted. Wherever, the attention is fixed, it is an anomaly. That area of fixation must be subject cleared to broaden the viewpoint. In Hinduism, this is called getting rid of all attachments.

When the fixed attention truly becomes free by broadening the viewpoint, there is a feeling of liberation that continues. One attains the certainty that one is much more than some boxed in ideas and thinking patterns. This feeling is real and not just the illusion of being “outside the body.”

When there is no fixed attention either on body or on self, one can then be as large as the reality one is witnessing at any time.

The simple method for freeing fixed attention is subject clearing. One can then view the whole universe for what it is.

The KHTK Factors (old)

Please see A Course on Hubbard’s Factors

Factor2

Scn Factor 1: Before the beginning was a Cause and the entire purpose of the Cause was the creation of effect.

KHTK Factor 1: At the bottom of all existence is a disturbance oscillating between awareness and non-awareness.

NOTE: Cause and effect form a dichotomy that is a part of awareness. Awareness itself is a part of a deeper dichotomy of awareness and non-awareness.

.

Scn Factor 2: In the beginning and forever is the decision and the decision is TO BE.

KHTK Factor 2: The interchanges between non-awareness and awareness give rise to dynamic beingness comprising existence.

NOTE: A transition from non-awareness to awareness appears as creation. Similarly, a transition from awareness to non-awareness appears as destruction. Such transitions give the appearance of awareness changing from one form to another. This is also called survival. Here beingness has the sense of “existingness.”

.

Scn Factor 3: The first action of beingness is to assume a viewpoint.

KHTK Factor 3: The dynamic beingness intrinsically consists of motion and awareness.

NOTE: All motion and awareness are part of the universal beingness. Motion and awareness are two sides of the same coin. When there is motion there is also awareness, and when there is awareness there is also motion. A viewpoint is the narrowing down of awareness, and may be looked upon as a unit of awareness of motion.

.

Scn Factor 4: The second action of beingness is to extend from the viewpoint, points to view, which are dimension points.

KHTK Factor 4: The beingness perceives its form as energy and matter.

NOTE: The beingness has a form made up of energy and matter, where matter is condensation of energy. The beingness is aware of its form.

.

Scn Factor 5: Thus there is space created, for the definition of space is: viewpoint of dimension. And the purpose of a dimension point is space and a point of view.

KHTK Factor 5: Perception separates beingness observed from beingness as observer. This brings about the phenomenon of SPACE.

NOTE: The perception, and the space across which perception takes place, is contained withing the beingness. Using Hubbard’s terminology, the dimension point, viewpoint and space shall all be part of beingness.

.

Scn Factor 6: The action of a dimension point is reaching and withdrawing.

KHTK Factor 6: The beingness changes by the time it perceives itself. This brings about the phenomenon of TIME.

NOTE: Beingness is dynamic so it changes while it perceives itself. Considering the beingness to be a wave of awareness, its wavelength may be looked upon as space and its period as time.

.

Scn Factor 7: And from the viewpoint to the dimension points there are connection and interchange. Thus new dimension points are made. Thus there is communication.

KHTK Factor 7: Space and Time are not absolute but transformable into each other. Thus the motion of the dynamic beingness is denoted by its frequency.

.

Scn Factor 8: And thus there is light.

KHTK Factor 8: The perception across space is denoted by light.

NOTE: The phenomena of perception and space appear to be closely related.

.

Scn Factor 9: And thus there is energy.

KHTK Factor 9: The frequency of beingness expresses energy.

NOTE: Here beingness means “existingness” that is composed of inherent recurring awareness.

.

Scn Factor 10: And thus there is life.

KHTK Factor 10: And thus there is life.

.

Scn Factor 11: But there are other viewpoints and these viewpoints outthrust points to view. And there comes about an interchange amongst viewpoints; but the interchange is never otherwise than in terms of exchanging dimension points.

KHTK Factor 11: Motion and awareness condense to gain individualized forms and qualities, which then combine to generate objects and identities. Motion condenses into atoms that combine to generate objects. Awareness condenses into viewpoints that combine to generate identities.

.

Scn Factor 12: The dimension point can be moved by the viewpoint, for the viewpoint, in addition to creative ability and consideration, possesses volition and potential independence of action; and the viewpoint, viewing dimension points, can change in relation to its own or other dimension points or viewpoints. Thus comes about all the fundamentals there are to motion.

KHTK Factor 12: Objects and identities develop capabilities to interact in complex ways. Objects, such as, cells, are capable of complex interactions. Identities, such as, self of organisms, are capable of complex computations.

.

Scn Factor 13: The dimension points are each and every one, whether large or small, solid. And they are solid solely because the viewpoints say they are solid.

KHTK Factor 13: Solidity of objects and identities, and of the complex interactions among them, comes from increasingly condensing patterns of motion and awareness.

.

Scn Factor 14: Many dimension points combine into larger gases, fluids or solids. Thus there is matter. But the most valued point is admiration, and admiration is so strong its absence alone permits persistence.

KHTK Factor 14: Patterns of motion combine to form the gaseous, fluid and solid states of matter. Patterns of awareness combine to form the various characteristics and abilities. The most important factor is consistency, for the absence of consistency alone brings about unwanted conditions.

.

Scn Factor 15: The dimension point can be different from other dimension points and thus can possess an individual quality. And many dimension points can possess a similar quality, and others can possess a similar quality unto themselves. Thus comes about the quality of classes of matter.

KHTK Factor 15: It is the differences and similarities among the characteristics of matter, and the abilities of organisms, that bring about the classes of beingness.

.

Scn Factor 16: The viewpoint can combine dimension points into forms and the forms can be simple or complex and can be at different distances from the viewpoints and so there can be combinations of form. And the forms are capable of motion and the viewpoints are capable of motion and so there can be motion of forms.

KHTK Factor 16: The patterns of motion and awareness become increasingly complex through interactions; and so we have atoms, cell structures, higher organisms, their characteristics and capabilities.

Note: The viewpoints are a reflection of what is being viewed.

.

Scn Factor 17: And the opinion of the viewpoint regulates the consideration of the forms, their stillness or their motion, and these considerations consist of assignment of beauty or ugliness to the forms and these considerations alone are art.

KHTK Factor 17: All considerations, such as, stillness and motion, beauty and ugliness, are patterns of awareness built into the patterns of motions, and their interactions. They develop into a sense of “I” and opinions.

.

Scn Factor 18: It is the opinions of the viewpoints that some of these forms should endure. Thus there is survival.

KHTK Factor 18: There is a continual change of beingness in its patterns of motion and awareness; but as some of these patterns endure in their forms and opinions there is survival.

.

Scn Factor 19: And the viewpoint can never perish; but the form can perish.

KHTK Factor 19: But even the patterns that endure in their forms and opinions, are bound to change eventually, as there is no underlying permanence.

NOTE: The form and viewpoint are reflection of each other. There is no absolute form or viewpoint independent of each other that can endure forever.

.

Scn Factor 20: And the many viewpoints, interacting, become dependent upon one another’s forms and do not choose to distinguish completely the ownership of dimension points and so comes about a dependency upon the dimension points and upon the other viewpoints.

KHTK Factor 20: All motion and awareness is interconnected. There is no absolute separation. Any sense of “I” and “ownership” is part of the manifestation of the complex patterns of motion and awareness.

NOTE: Viewpoints are not “senior” or “junior” to the forms being viewed. Such opinions are simply a part of what is.

.

Scn Factor 21: From this comes a consistency of viewpoint of the interaction of dimension points and this, regulated, is TIME.

KHTK Factor 21: There is an inherent consistency in all motion and awareness.

NOTE: Any inconsistency in motion and awareness simply stands out. It fixes or disperses the attention.

.

Scn Factor 22: And there are universes.

KHTK Factor 22: The whole system of motion and awareness is the UNIVERSE.

NOTE: In a literal sense, the word UNIVERSE means, “turned into one”. Thus multiple universes are simply subsets of an overall UNIVERSE.

.

Scn Factor 23: The universes, then, are three in number: the universe created by one viewpoint, the universe created by every other viewpoint, the universe created by the mutual action of viewpoints which is agreed to be upheld—the physical universe.

KHTK Factor 23: Separate universes may congeal within the UNIVERSE as the sense of “I” and ownership emerges; but they are still interconnected and never separate.

.

Scn Factor 24: And the viewpoints are never seen. And the viewpoints consider more and more that the dimension points are valuable. And the viewpoints try to become the anchor points and forget that they can create more points and space and forms. Thus comes about scarcity. And the dimension points can perish and so the viewpoints assume that they, too, can perish.

KHTK Factor 24: The sense of “I” and ownership brings about attachments, which create a sense of scarcity and potential loss.

.

Scn Factor 25: Thus comes about death.

KHTK Factor 25: Thus comes about death.

.

Scn Factor 26: The manifestations of pleasure and pain, of thought, emotion and effort, of thinking, of sensation, of affinity, reality, communication, of behavior and being are thus derived and the riddles of our universe are apparently contained and answered herein.

KHTK Factor 26: Pleasure and pain, thought, emotion, effort, thinking, sensation, affinity, reality, communication, behavior and being are all manifestations of these factors.

.

Scn Factor 27: There is beingness, but man believes there is only becomingness.

KHTK Factor 27: Fundamentally, all these manifestations are a continual interplay of awareness and non-awareness; but the attachments to them brings about a desire for permanency where there can be no permanency.

.

Scn Factor 28: The resolution of any problem posed hereby is the establishment of viewpoints and dimension points, the betterment of condition and concourse amongst dimension points, and, thereby, viewpoints, and the remedy of abundance or scarcity in all things, pleasant or ugly, by the rehabilitation of the ability of the viewpoint to assume points of view and create and uncreate, neglect, start, change and stop dimension points of any kind at the determinism of the viewpoint. Certainty in all three universes must be regained, for certainty, not data, is knowledge.

KHTK Factor 28: The resolution of any problem posed hereby lies in seeing things as they are, spotting of the inconsistencies as they present themselves, and resolving them through the practice of mindfulness.

.

Scn Factor 29: In the opinion of the viewpoint, any beingness, any thing, is better than no thing, any effect is better than no effect, any universe better than no universe, any particle better than no particle, but the particle of admiration is best of all.

KHTK Factor 29: There is inherently a relative consistency in all manifestations arising from the continual interplay of awareness and non-awareness; and nothing is ever absolute.

.

Scn Factor 30: And above these things there might be speculation only. And below these things there is the playing of the game. But these things which are written here man can experience and know. And some may care to teach these things and some may care to use them to assist those in distress and some may desire to employ them to make individuals and organizations more able and so give to Earth a culture of which we can be proud.

KHTK Factor 30: Thus we have an eternal stage that stages its own plays eternally.

The Human-Centric Fixation

Human8
Reference:  Motion and Space-Time

The scientific method searches for truth in the Universe by coming up with a hypothesis from empirical observations, testing the hypothesis by making predictions, and then verifying the predictions. This works to the degree one is objective.

It is much easier to be objective when studying physical objects. This is not so when studying mental objects because the mental processes one uses to study are very similar. This difficulty may be overcome by the practice of mindfulness (seeing things as they are). Mindfulness requires the following criterion.

POSTULATE: Truth is determined by consistency of definitions and data in the broadest context possible.

.

The scientific observations are reality-centric because rigorous consistency with physical reality is maintained through the use of experiments and mathematical models. Any assumption that cannot be verified by actual experiment is discarded.  Any inconsistency associated with a hypothesis must be resolved before it is accepted as a theory.

When it comes to maintaining rigorous consistency with mental reality, thought experiments become very necessary. But such thought experiments must be conducted for consistency in the broadest context possible.

Reality-centric observations are accepted only after rigorous verification.

.

It is the human-centric observations that made us believe that (1) Earth is the center of the universe; (2) the Sun revolves around the earth; and (3) the Earth is flat. These conclusions were proven wrong when science established greater consistency in celestial observations through the use of experiments and mathematics.

The human-centric observations are limited to human context. Assumptions are made to compensate for that limitation. When such assumptions are elevated to the level of beliefs it becomes very difficult to correct them. Even when the human-centric observations were shown to be inconsistent with celestial observations, science had to fight long and hard to get its conclusions accepted.

Human-centric observations suffer from belief in unverified assumptions.

.

Many believe that this Universe was created. When one conducts thought experiments in a broader context, one finds that the Universe could have transitioned from non-awareness into awareness. The Universe did not have to be created. The belief that this Universe is created has never been verified objectively. In fact, the ancient Vedas do not believe that this Universe was created. This raises doubt about this religious belief in creation.

It is a human-centric belief that this universe was created.

.

Furthermore, the religious belief goes on to say that this Universe was created by an eternal Being who has awareness and intelligence more sophisticated than those of humans. Scientific studies show that human awareness is only a recent development that has evolved from earlier forms of awareness. Ancient Vedas speak only in terms of elemental awareness at the beginning of the universe. It is highly unlikely that a highly sophisticated Being existed at the beginning of the universe.

It is a human-centric belief that this Universe started from highly developed awareness.

.

It is a religious belief that spirit and matter are separate, and that awareness can exist all by itself. Thought experiments show that awareness arises only when there is relative motion. Relative motion is a material characteristic. We find that awareness and relative motion cannot be separated from each other.  Separation between spirit and matter cannot be verified objectively. In fact, ancient Vedas speak of Brahma and existence to be one.

It is a human-centric belief that “spirit and matter” are separate.

.

It is commonly thought that an observer must be separate from what is being observed; that an observer cannot observe itself. But we find that the reality-centric observation is essentially reality observing itself. The observer is part of the reality. The observer does not have to be identified with a self. When one observes in as broad a context as possible then it becomes possible to recognize reality for what it is. From this viewpoint the observer is not separate from what is observed.

It is a human-centric belief that observer must be separate from the observed.

.

It is commonly assumed that “observer” is a being with humanlike awareness. This being is unique, permanent and separate from reality. However, thought experiments show awareness is also relative motion that forms the basis of all reality. Further studies show that human awareness has evolved from earlier awareness. There is no unique, permanent being that is separate from reality. “Beingness” is changing all the time like the rest of reality.

It is a human-centric belief that observer is unique, permanent and not part of reality.

.

The observer is not some fixed point from which reality is being observed. Observer is part of reality as is that, which is being observed. It is reality observing itself. It is the fixation on self that makes one believe that one is unique and separate from reality.

The human-centric belief is characterized by fixation on self.

Awareness and Motion

earth-alone
Reference: Universe and Awareness

If you are alone out in interstellar space, you shall be hard put to decide if you are totally still or moving at the speed of light. Your awareness shall arise only with relative motion.

In this thought experiment, awareness cannot be separated from relative motion. We may, therefore, postulate that relative motion is the outward form of awareness.

POSTULATE: Relative motion is the outward form of awareness.

.

The relative motion can be very simple, such as, a ripple in water. This is simple awareness. Or, relative motion can be very complex, such as, the motion inside a watch. This is complex awareness. Thus, complexity of awareness is related to complexity of motion.

Awareness may be assessed objectively in terms of motion present.

.

When one is completely free of thoughts, there is still the perception of the present. So there is some motion. But when one is in deep sleep, in which hours pass by in a blink of an eye, there is no perception. There is no motion either. Thus, any perception, including the perception of space and time, relates to motion.

All perception, including the perception of space and time, relates to motion.

.

According to Buddha (India, c. 563 BCE or c. 480 BCE), the Absolute Truth is that there is nothing absolute in the world, that everything is relative, conditioned and impermanent, and that there is no unchanging, everlasting, absolute substance like Self, Soul, or Ātman within or without.

In other words, the principle of the unity of Universe is awareness in the form of relative motion. Absolute stillness would be non-awareness.

This is a universe of awareness and motion. There is no absolute stillness in it.

.

Awareness represents the spiritual aspect of this universe, whereas motion represents the material aspect of this universe. The material aspect is the visible form of this universe. The spiritual aspect is the inherent nature of this universe.

The material aspect of this universe is its visible form . The spiritual aspect of this universe is its inherent nature.

.

According to Heraclitus (Greece, c. 535 – c. 475 BCE) there is only perpetual change and eternal ‘Becoming.’ This condition is created from a dynamic and cyclic interplay of opposites. These opposites are dichotomies that may be represented as the two directions in which a continuum may extend. This continuum may be expressed as a scale with infinite gradient of values. This makes each value to be relative and none that is absolute.

All values in this universe are relative (determined by other values). There is no absolute value.

.

The Eleatic school first identified a Divine Principle with the unity of the universe. This basic principle may be stated as “awareness – motion”. Parmenides (Greece, c. 515 – c. 460 BCE), however, identified this principle with a unique and invariable Being that stood above all gods and men. This Being was later seen as an intelligent and personal God who stands above the world and directs it.

Anything that stands above the universe shall remain behind the “curtain” of non-awareness from which the Universe emerges into awareness. We may only speculate what is behind this “curtain” of non-awareness. The Being of Parmenides, therefore, has to be a human-centric speculation. This speculation leads to the separation of spirit and matter, which contradicts the principle of “awareness that has the outward form of motion.”

The idea that an absolute Being stands above this universe comes from a human-centric speculation.

.

Awareness develops into self and motion develops into body. The two are one and same. Body is the outward form of self. Self is the inherent nature of the body. If there is a universal Self, then its body is the Universe. Awareness and motion, or Self and body, are not really separate.

A universal Self shall have the Universe as its outward form. There is no absolute Being separate from the Universe.

.

The self of a stone shall be its inherent nature. We are not saying that the self of a stone is similar to the human self. Human self is characterized by the inherent nature of humans. We cannot use human self as the criterion to define the self of other things.

Awareness shall be the inherent nature of visible forms. It shall be determined by the motion within that form, the most fundamental motion shall be that at atomic level. We have been using a “human-centric” view of awareness as the criterion to declare material objects to be unaware. That is a very narrow view.

In humans, awareness is much more complex because of the complexity of motion in the human form. It is expressed as the subjectivity of the human mind. In material objects, awareness is much simpler because of much simpler motion in their form. It is expressed as the physical, electrical and chemical properties.

In Vedas, the word “dharma” is used to describe the inherent nature of things. This is same as the concept of awareness described here.

Awareness is truly represented by the inherent nature of things. Thus all things are aware in their own way.
