Universe and Awareness

The Creation Hymn of Rig Veda

Of all the dichotomies in this Universe, the most interesting dichotomy is “awareness – non-awareness.”

“Non-awareness” is like a curtain. We do not know what is behind that curtain. We only know what is in front of it. When something emerges from that curtain we become aware of it. Until then we may only speculate about what is behind that curtain.

POSTULATE: The Universe begins as it emerges from behind the “curtain” of non-awareness.

Like any dichotomy, “awareness – non-awareness” may represent a single continuum, and the two ends extend to infinity in either direction. The “curtain” described above is a transition point on this continuum, and not a point of creation.

We cannot tell whether the universe was ever created or if it has always been there.

The state of the Universe behind the “curtain” can only be speculated. If there is a Divine Principle that stands above the Universe, it would lie behind the “curtain,” and would only represent a speculation.

Any Divine Principle that stands above the Universe may be relegated to speculation.

Since the Universe begins when it transitions from non-awareness into awareness, the common denominator of the entire Universe may be established as AWARENESS. Awareness is, however, only half of the dichotomy. The Vedic process of “Neti, Neti” (not this, not that) essentially asserts that the basis of this universe lies beyond awareness.

The Universe is made up of AWARENESS, the basis of which lies in non-awareness.

The idea, “God created this world” arbitrarily divides the awareness of Universe into “God” and “world.” God cannot be excluded from the awareness of Universe.

The Universal awareness shall include awareness attributed to gods or God.

The universe begins with awareness. It has evolved entirely out of awareness. It may end by transitioning back into non-awareness. The universe has to be aware of itself because it is all that there is.

The Universe is aware of itself.

SELF is “awareness / motion” at any instant.

Self may be very light and changing continuously.

Or, SELF could be very complex, lumbering along and changing extremely slowly.

SELF could be termed as “awareness unit.” It is more so when it is condensed and can be easily isolated from its surroundings.

SELF would then include all other parts, such as, spirit, mind and body.

The whole Universe could be termed as a SELF.

Then parts of universe may start to congeal. These parts may be regarded as “selves” in themselves.

But all these selves are connected as parts of the universe.

The Ultimate Self seems to be THAT behind the curtain of non-awareness. It can known only after it has transitioned into awareness. But by that time it is already changed.

Per THE PARADOX OF UNKNOWABLE this universe of awareness is persisting because of a desire to know.

    (1) As long as we are attached to the viewpoint of awareness, non-awareness remains out of our grasp.

    (2) What makes the attachment persist is that we are taking awareness for granted instead of recognizing it as inconsistency.

    (3) By resolving this inconsistency of attachment to awareness we shall also resolve the problem of non-awareness.

    (4) We shall then know the Universe as a consistent whole, which will include the dichotomy of “awareness – non-awareness.”

    (5) This complete understanding shall satisfy the desire to know.

    (6) On shall then know the unity beyond this dichotomous Universe.

The dimension of intuition would be unknowable and inaccessible to a viewpoint immersed in logical thinking.

Intuition lies in a dimension that is orthognal to the dimension of logical associations.

The universe consists of both awareness and non-awareness, or both Knowable and Unknowable dimensions.

A Universal viewpoint shall be above both of these dimensions. It will be a viewpoint that is not attached to any awareness or non-awareness. It is totally free. It shall be more like

No matter how much you know, there is always something unknown beyond it. And that is wonderful because that makes one strive farther to achieve a deeper understanding. Understanding, in my view, is bottomless.

It is this condition of never being able to know something in an absolute sense, which I like to refer to as Unknowable.

It is another way of saying that there are no absolutes.

Transition from non-awareness to awareness brings about Manifestation. We cannot say anything about whatever is behind the curtain of non-awareness.

One can only know what is manifested. One may only speculate upon what is not manifested.

KNOWABLE is that which is manifested. UNKNOWABLE cannot be defined because there is nothing manifested to be defined.

KNOWABLE is the nature of existence.

UNKNOWN is more like something manifested but not known. UNKNOWABLE is that which is not yet manifested.
