From Scientology 8-8008, section THE BEINGNESS OF MAN:

“The personality and beingness which actually is the individual and is aware of being aware and is ordinarily and normally the “person” and who the individual thinks he is, is the thetan; and this awareness can continue, is clarified and is not interrupted by a detachment from the body which is accomplished by standard processing.”

In an out-of-body experience (OBE), a person feels that he is outside the body. He can view his own body from a distance. He can perceive the environment also from that vantage point. Scientology interprets this phenomenon to assert that the person has moved out of the body. This person is the “thetan”, which can exist all by itself without the physical body.

In reality the viewpoint has shifted from the frame of reference of the body to a frame of reference that surrounds the body. The metaphysical viewpoint has not separated itself from the physical body. This would be inconsistent.

Most people look at the world from the frame of reference of their body all the time. When, all of a sudden, this frame of reference happens to shift from body to the environment, the person experiences the dramatic phenomenon of OBE.

In the out-of-body phenomena the viewpoint shifts from the frame of reference of the body to a frame of reference that surrounds the body.

Scientology Filter: It is an arbitrary assumption in Scientology that the spiritual beingness of a person can be separated literally from the physical beingness.

Human viewpoint has many dimensions. Spatial view is just one aspect of it. We can get a better idea of this aspect from the following example.

Let’s look at an atom. When the viewpoint is limited to the nucleus we are subjectively aware of the nucleus, but not much else. When that viewpoint expands to the first electronic shell of the atom we can objectively see the nucleus. When that viewpoint expands beyond the electronic region, we can objectively see the whole atom – a nucleus surrounded by electronic shells. If we expand that viewpoint beyond the electromagnetic field, we can objectively see atoms as “whirlpools” in the electromagnetic field.

The spatial aspect of human viewpoint can easily expand beyond earth. What one sees is a good approximation of reality. It is very vivid in case of OBE.

The Scientology thetan is simply the spatial aspect of the human viewpoint.

Reference: Scientology

Science assumes that the universe is, as its name implies, a vast single system. It further presumes that the things and events in the universe occur in consistent patterns that are comprehensible through careful, systematic study.

The scientific ideas have developed over the course of human history. The progress of these ideas is marked by improved experimental observations; improved thinking in terms of logic and mathematics; and improved validation in terms of technology.

For the purpose of the current project, we postulate the following.

POSTULATE 1: Universal reality is a single system that is continuous and harmonious at every point in all directions.

Thus, we shall consider scientific knowledge to be logically and intuitively consistent at every point in all directions.

This leads immediately to the following conclusions.

COROLLARY 1: Scientific truth consists of consistency in the perception of reality. Any inconsistency shall indicate missing truth.

COROLLARY 2: The resolution of inconsistency reestablishes the missing truth.

This provides us with a definition of scientific truth as follows.

DEFINITION 1: Scientific truth is knowledge that is consistent with universal reality.

The scientific truth is considered objective because it simply is. It is unmodified. It implies a universal context and a universal viewpoint. A truth is subjective when it is seen to be consistent only within a context where reality is being modified by the personal viewpoint. 

POSTULATE 2: The Scientific Truth simply is. It is objective and unmodified.

COROLLARY 3: Truth is subjective when limited and modified by personal viewpoint.

A personal viewpoint filters the reality. Filtering is done by bias, prejudice, assumption, fixed idea and blind faith.

POSTULATE 3: Personal viewpoint is made up of filters that limit and modify the view.

DEFINITION 2: Filters are made up of bias, prejudice, assumption, fixed idea and blind faith.

COROLLARY 4: Objectivity depends on absence of filters.

Thus, truth may be plotted on a scale of subjectivity to objectivity. Truth is not objective so long as there are doubts and perplexities due to inconsistencies. Even when there is “certainty” of objectivity, truth could be subjective because of unknown filters.

COROLLARY 5: One never takes truth to be absolute. A truth can always be improved further.

The Scientology logic is based on survival.

“LOGIC 11: The value of a datum or field of data can be established by its degree of assistance in survival or its inhibition to survival.”

This introduces a filter because the idea of survival brings in personal consideration. Therefore, logic in Scientology is subjective.

Reference: A Critique of Scientology Philosophy

From Scientology 8-8008, section THETA-MEST THEORY:

“One of the most valuable contributions of Scientology to knowledge is the definition of a true static… Formerly a static was defined only as a motionless object which definition is not adequate, since an object—or a state of rest for an object—is attained only by an equilibrium of forces and all objects have in themselves, if only on a molecular level, motion, and exist in space which is itself an integral portion of motion. Hence we see we are dealing with a higher level static.”

This is a very good observation. A deeper level of static shall be zero energy. According to Einstein, matter is condensed energy. Therefore, even when still, none of the objects are truly static as they contain motion at atomic level.

We observe matter converting back to electromagnetic energy in atomic or nuclear explosions. The electromagnetic energy is disturbance in space. This disturbance has a frequency spectrum. On this spectrum, the theoretical frequency of zero may be the true static. This shall denote undisturbed space. 

POSTULATE 5: The theoretical static is undisturbed space where space represents the overall scope of physical dimensions.

Space provides the extent in which we find the dimensions of energy and matter.

From Scientology 8-8008, section THETA-MEST THEORY:

“In Scientology, the static is represented by the mathematical symbol theta… Theta can be the property or beingness of any individual and is, for our purposes, considered to be individualistic for each individual… The capabilities of the static are not limited.”

Static is no motion but it is associated with unlimited potential in Scientology. This is inconsistent because true static shall be complete absense of energy whether it is kinetic or potential. It is not only a static in physical dimensions but also in spiritual dimensions.

Scientology Filter #3: It is an arbitrary assumption in Scientology that static condition in the spirtual dimenion is unlimited capabilities.

The overall scope of spiritual dimensions is represented by awareness. Therefore, the true static shall denote undisturbed awareness.

POSTULATE 6: The theoretical static is undisturbed awareness where awareness represents the overall scope of spiritual dimensions.

Awareness provides the scope in which we find the dimensions of consciousness and identity.

COROLLARY 7: The physical concept of space extends into metaphysics as the concept of awareness.
