The Universal Context

Previous: Confusion and Faith
Next: Evolution of the Universe

The main topic of mindfulness discussion in the third class on Mindfulness Course is UNIVERSAL CONTEXT. We take up this topic because confusion can be completely eliminated only in the universal context.

.

SUBJECTIVE & OBJECTIVE

  1. Faith helps align the confusions in life. The wider is the context of faith the greater order it brings to life.

  2. There are uncountable narrow personal contexts. Faiths, which are limited to those contexts, bring order only within those contexts. Faith limited to narrow personal context is SUBJECTIVE.

  3. When expanded, narrow contexts converge to the same universal context. Faith that is valid throughout the universal context brings complete order. Such universally broad faith is OBJECTIVE.

.

THE SCOPE OF UNIVERSAL CONTEXT

  1. By definition, the universal context includes everything. There is nothing beside the universal context.

  2. The universal context shall include multiverses, parallel universes, the physical universe and even the gods or God.

  3. Thus, the universal context includes all attributes, physical and metaphysical.

.

THE ORIENTATION POINT OF THE UNIVERSE

  1. The universal context increases in attributes with evolution. We may, therefore, have a scale of universal attributes that goes from zero to infinity.

  2. The reference point of “zero attributes” is theoretical because absolute nothingness does not exist. This reference-point is useful in measuring evolution on a universal scale.

  3. This universe is continually changing physically and metaphysically. No form in it survives forever. Therefore, it is always in motion.

  4. We may, therefore, call the reference point of this universe, STATIC, which will be a point of no motion. All motion in the universe shall be relative to this static. All attributes of the universe shall converge to static.

  5. The STATIC of no attributes shall act as the orientation point for the universe of infinite attributes.

.

NIRVANA AND GOD

  1. Nirvana in Buddhism is expressed as accessing that “still center” around which the self is built. Attaining nirvana literally means “blowing out, extinction, disappearance”. It implies that no attributes are left. We may identify nirvana with the STATIC described above.

  2. God is generally described in terms of omniscience (infinite knowledge), omnipotence (unlimited power), omnipresence (present everywhere), divine simplicity, and as having an eternal and necessary existence. We may identify God with infinite attributes – the other end of the scale described above.

  3. We may put all the physical attributes in the category of the physical universe; and all the metaphysical attributes in the category of God. But these categories are for convenience only. In actuality, all the physical and metaphysical attributes are well-integrated.

.

In the next class we shall look at the evolution of the universe.

Confusion & Faith

Previous: Mindfulness Meditation
Next: Mindfulness Approach

The main topic of mindfulness discussion in the second class on Mindfulness Course is CONFUSION & FAITH. We start with this topic because it is something common to all our experience.

.

CONFUSION & STABLE DATUM

  1. Confusion is natural. It appears in the universe as chaos. The process of evolution converts this chaos into order.

  2. Confusion is common to all our experience. Bringing order to this confusion helps us evolve. That is what life is all about.

  3. To speed up our own evolution it is important to understand the concept of confusion.

  4. Confusion is RANDOM MOTION. An example would be the swirling confetti that is falling from above. It is very difficult to track down each and every piece of that confetti.

  5. If you can hold on to just one piece of confetti, you can then track the motion of all other confetti relative to it. Therefore, in order to start handling confusion, you must find something that is stable, and which you can hold on to.

  6. FAITH acts as that stable datum to which you can align the confusing data of life. The faith does not have to be correct or true. It just have to be relatively stable. Thus, people do acquire all kind of strange faiths.

.

FAITH & UNIVERSAL CONTEXT

  1. The stability of faith depends on the context to which it appiles. A faith may be workable in a limited context, but not in a different or larger context. The larger is the context to which a faith applies, the better it is.

  2. To bring better order to life, one needs to examine and upgrade one’s faith continually so that it is workable within larger contexts. One can always improve upon one’s faith.

  3. The best faith is that which can be held constant in the largest context possible, which is the UNIVERSE.

.

In the next class we shall discuss the nature of the universal context, or the UNIVERSE.

The Stages of Evolution

man

Previous: The Process of Evolution
Next: The Dynamics

The stages of evolution seem to be as follows:

  1. From continuity to discreteness
  2. From stillness to animation
  3. From reaction to analytical thinking
  4. From analytical thinking to critical thinking (intelligence).

.

FROM CONTINUITY TO DISCRETENESS

Both continuity and discreteness come into picture with disturbance. The discreteness grows as follows:

  1. The frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum
  2. The resonances of the electronic structure
  3. The particles of the atomic structure

At first, we see continuity manifested more at low frequencies, whereas, discreteness is manifested more at higher frequencies. The next level of discreteness is manifested as resonances among frequencies. This is the area of Quantum Mechanics. The ultimate level of discreteness is manifested as particles, with the atoms.

There is a spectrum of discreteness from frequencies to resonances to particles visible in the atoms. The nucleus of an atom is particle-like; and the electronic structure is resonance-like. The atomic structure then extends beyond in a frequency-like manner.

.

FROM STILLNESS TO ANIMATION

Atoms as particles combine and grow in complexity of forms. We have rocks, metals, minerals, etc. All these material forms do not have the ability of self-animation. Therefore, we do not consider them to have life. A piece of rock just sits there totally still and lifeless.

Self-animation seems to enter at the level of RNA and DNA molecules. These molecules are large and they have enough number of electrons in their orbitals to carry out the functions of electronic circuits. So, these molecules are programmable, and they are programmed by nature. These molecules are, therefore, self-animated. This self-animation of forms is what we call life.

.

FROM REACTION TO ANALYTICAL THINKING

The life enters into the picture and becomes more and more complex – first as plant life, then animal life, and finally human life. At first, the animation is purely in the form of reaction. By reaction is meant, that there is only one option in how to respond to some stimuli. Gradually, analytical thinking starts to enter the picture. Here we have more than one option on how to respond to some stimuli.

When we see the organisms of the same specie responding differently to the same stimuli, then we know that some analytical thinking going on there. There is greater analytical thinking at the level of highly evolved animal life.

.

FROM ANALYTICAL THINKING TO CRITICAL (INTELLIGENT) THINKING

Analytical thinking, at its highest stage, evolves into critical thinking (intelligence). This occurs at the level of humans. Intelligence is the ability to recognize differences, similarities and identities, and to take a decision based on one’s observation of things as they are. This is the highest evolution we have gotten to so far.

However, the reactive mode is still retained in humans. The critical thinking mode often descends into analytical and reactive modes under stress. It remains in the lower modes when the person is stressed. To evolve further, we need to fully understand the critical, analytical and reactive modes.

.

CONCLUSION

An objective philosophy must focus broadly on the whole process of evolution and not just on Man. It should now consider the next step of evolution beyond Man.

Awareness develops into consciousness along the steps outlined above. Any “free will” shall exist only within the perimeter of the laws of evolution.

Life, as we know it,  first emerges with RNA and DNA molecules that can act as self-animated molecular computers because of their advance electronic structure. Life is a manifestation of something more fundamental.

That something more fundamental is the Law of Alignment (consistency, harmony and continuity).

The Process of Evolution

Previous: A Basic Model of Universe
Next: The Stages of Evolution

This universe is evolving. The evolution is gradually bringing order to the randomness of this universe. Underlying this evolution is the Law of Alignment that naturally seeks continuity, harmony and consistency (ref: Self-Determinism and Laws of Alignment).

In our model of the universe, the chaotic disturbance or randomness is symbolized by PHI; and the organized motion or ordered experience is symbolized by THETA (ref: A Basic Model of Universe). During the process of evolution PHI is gradually being converted into THETA per the Law of Alignment.

At the interface of PHI and THETA there lays LAMBDA, the life organism. LAMBDA is made up of a “physique” and a “control center”. The physique senses the misalignment between its own efforts and the random efforts of PHI. The control center sorts out those misalignments by freely associating them with the universally-indexed, experiential field of THETA.

Within LAMBDA itself, the misalignment of efforts on the “physique” side is immediately reflected as the misalignment in experience on the “control center” side. Similarly, the alignment of experience on the “control center” side is immediately reflected as the alignment of efforts on the “physique” side.

In short, the process of evolution is made up of the following steps.

  1. LAMBDA has a “physique” made up of physical elements.

  2. LAMBDA also has a “control center” made up of metaphysical elements called experience.

  3. The “physique” is directed by the “control center”.

  4. The physique of LAMBDA senses the misalignment between its own efforts and the random efforts in its environment (PHI).

  5. This misalignment of efforts is immediately reflected as misalignment in experience in the control center. The control center consists of a well-aligned and indexed experiential matrix that immediately applies its alignment and indexing to the incoming misalignment.

  6. The control center brings the misalignment into alignment through free association. Any gaps in free associations are filled by working out the required continuity, harmony and consistency with appropriate starting postulate.

  7. The incoming misalignment thus gets straightened out and assimilated into the experiential matrix of the control center.

  8. This assimilated and aligned experience is immediately reflected in the efforts of the physique.

  9. The newly aligned efforts of the organism then interact with further random efforts in the environment as in step 4 above.

  10. And the cycle continues.

Here we see that a misalignment immediately triggers free association (and postulation) until the alignment in the experiential matrix of the organism is restored. But the experiential matrix of the organism seems to be surrounded by an experiential matrix of the society. So, this triggering of free association may have a ripple effect beyond the organism into the society of that organism.

We may look at THETA as the “universal experiential field”. This experiential field will then contain all the smaller experiential matrices. The experiential matrices may act respectively as control centers of species, societies, groups and individual organisms. We may therefore say that THETA functions as the “control center” of the entire universe per the Law of Alignment.

This is a description of the mechanism by which randomness of PHI gets converted into the organization of THETA.

This is evolution.

A Basic Model of Universe

Previous: Self-Determinism and Laws of the Universe
Next: The Process of Evolution

All properties of the universe must converge back to the reference point of absolute zero for proper orientation. We call this point STATIC. This reference point is theoretical but very essential. The static is the orientation point from which to view this vast universe. For further data on the logic which helped arrive at the concept of static, please refer to Nirvana and Realization of God.

The key characteristic of the universe is the cycle of action, which is described as “begin-change-end”. There are cycles within cycles ad infinitum. One cycle leads into another cycle. This gives us a universe of change where no form survives permanently. We symbolize this change as DELTA. We refer to this DELTA in general as disturbance.

Another characteristic of this universe is the Law of Alignment. Every state of the universe emerges from a previous state. We may only speculate on how the universe began, but we can logically say that each state of the universe aligns with the state just before it. For further data on the logic which helped arrive at this law, please refer to Self-Determinism and Laws of Alignment. This Law of Alignment underlies all other laws of this universe.

Thus this universe has a natural tendency to align the disturbance within it. There is continual movement toward greater order. We call this movement EVOLUTION. The chaotic disturbance is gradually evolving into organized motion.

We refer to the chaotic disturbance as PHI. We refer to the organized motion as THETA. Thus we may state the following.

  1. DELTA (disturbance) is the basic characteristic of change in this universe
  2. DELTA has the aspects of PHI (chaos) and THETA (order).
  3. PHI is continually evolving into THETA, goaded by the Law of Alignment.

THETA evolves as more and more disturbance gets aligned. THETA has spiritual and physical aspects that are always equivalent as follows.

  1. THETA is goaded spiritually by Desire, the physical equivalent of which is Time.
  2. THETA starts out as Awareness, the physical equivalent of which is Space.
  3. THETA then changes into Consciousness, the physical equivalent of which is Energy.
  4. THETA then condenses into Identity, the physical equivalent of which is Matter.

We may refer to the spiritual aspects of THETA as ICAD using the first letters of Identity, Consciousness, Awareness and Desire. We may refer to the physical aspects of THETA as MEST using the first letters of Matter, Energy, Space and Time.

Thus, we may state the following.

  1. The spiritual aspect of THETA is ICAD, the physical equivalent of which is MEST.
  2. Evolution of THETA means the evolution of ICAD and MEST.

The interface between THETA (order) and PHI (chaos) are the life organisms. The symbol used for life organism is LAMBDA.

PHI forms the environment of LAMBDA. LAMBDA perceives the random efforts in the environment, and converts them into experience by aligning and assimilating them into an experiential matrix. The efforts have the characteristics of MEST. The experiences have the characteristics of ICAD.

  1. The interface between THETA and PHI is called LAMBDA (the life organism).
  2. The interaction of LAMBDA with PHI is in terms of MEST efforts.
  3. The interaction of LAMBDA with THETA is in terms of ICAD experience.

The experiential matrix acts as the Control Center of LAMBDA. It guides the physical form of LAMBDA, which then senses the efforts in the environment and interacts with them. This way the efforts in the environment get aligned. Thus evolution takes place not only in terms of experiential matrix (ICAD) but also in terms of physical forms (MEST)

The experiential matrix combines among individual life organisms, colonies, species, and all properties in the universe to become a universal experiential field. This is THETA.

On the other hand all random efforts in the environment combine among all regions on a planet, solar systems, and galaxies in the universe to become the universal disorder. This is PHI.

There is always free association going on in the experiential field with the perceptions received from the environment to align all the experiences. These aligned experiences then guide the efforts to bring order in the chaotic environment.

  1. The Law of Alignment is continually converting PHI into THETA through the interface of LAMBDA.

It is important to know the basic terminology here as we shall be using them again in subsequent essays.

STATIC: The absolute zero physically and metaphysically
DELTA: The symbol for change or disturbance
THETA: The symbol for organized motion
PHI: The symbol for chaotic disturbance.
ICAD: Identity, Consciousness, Awareness and Desire
