The Logic of Duality

Reference: The Logic of Truth

In this essay we are going to look at the logical structure of the universe. A logical universe shall be a universe that is consistent throughout. It shall have a ring of truth to it simply because it is consistent.

In the process of looking at the universe logically we are bound to run into inconsistencies. We shall look at each inconsistency more closely and see where they would lead us to if we resolve them.

The very first inconsistency that comes up about the nature of the universe is. “Is this universe basically an expression of duality or non-duality?”

Everywhere we see opposing concepts—such as, ‘night and day’, ‘good and evil’, ‘man and woman’, etc. Actually, the question above itself is an expression of duality. Any concept seems to brings about an opposite concept. Can we then conclude that this universe is an expression of duality?

“Not so fast,” says the non-dualist, “Non-duality points to the idea that the universe and all its multiplicity are ultimately expressions or appearances of one essential reality.” It is asserted that there is a reality that transcends the opposites.

How can we grasp that reality conjured up by the non-dualist?

A logically consistent universe shall be made up of states that proceed from one state to the next in a consistent manner leaving no gaps.

On a number line, the value of a number changes from one point to the next in a consistent manner without any gaps.  The number line extends in a consistent manner from negative infinity to positive infinity.

Is the concept of number the “one essential reality,” which expresses itself in the duality of negative and positive infinities?

Let us consider the duality of ‘night and day’ of the real universe. We find that night is changing into day, and day is changing into night with the steady rotation of earth. We notice the continuously varying characteristic of illumination, which expresses itself in the extremes of night and day.

Is illumination that “one essential reality,” which expresses itself in the duality of night and day?

We shall see a duality when we focus on the extremes and do not take into account the continuously varying nature of some attribute of the universe. The bigger is the gap between two points on the scale of that attribute, the more is the likelihood that those points shall appear as opposites.

So, duality appears when we focus only on the extreme states of a varying characteristic. Duality disappears when we recognize the characteristic that is varying continuously.

Thus we settle the argument about the essential nature of the universe by taking a mindful approach to looking at the “opposites” more closely.

The Logic of Truth

Logic of Universe

Truth, as perceived, is never absolute. Truth is perceived from one logical state to the next logical state in a relative manner only. The smooth transition of truth from one step to the next is the harmony that qualifies the truth.

The harmony of truth reflects in the consistency of observations from one moment to the next. When the consistency is missing in observation then there is probably some truth hidden somewhere.

One may have no idea of what the absolute truth is; but one can definitely spot inconsistency when it is present. There is a built-in sense within us that flags inconsistencies.

When we are searching for truth it does not really matter whether that truth is absolute or relative. We just want to discover the missing step, which is causing the inconsistency in one’s observation. When we find that missing piece of truth, the consistency in observation is restored.

Looking for absolute truth may be an impossible task. But looking for consistency in observation is feasible.

Maybe if we start seeking consistency in everything, we may ultimately reach the absolute truth. That is a hope and not certainty.

There may be many levels of consistency in what we observe. Once we have achieved a certain level of consistency, we may know intuitively that there must also be consistency at a deeper level of abstraction. We may now become aware of new inconsistencies at deeper levels. And so we look for deeper truth to attain deeper harmony within ourselves.

Thus, truth is not just one-dimensional affair. Truth is probably two-dimensional, or even multi-dimensional. This may point to the universe having a multi-dimensional logical structure as we see in the subjects of mathematics and philosophy.

The whole logical structure of the universe may be looked upon as one single truth. That truth may be absolute, or maybe not, but it can definitely provide a context in which the relativity and interconnection of all other truth could be seen.

Knowing this overall logical structure of the universe may lead us to the absolute truth.

The absolute truth may be a moving target, but the strategy outlined here, at least, gives us a workable approach toward it.

Life and Death

Life is made up of motion and awareness. Inherent consciousness arises when there is a change in motion and awareness. Such consciousness cannot be separated from changes in motion and the manifestation of inertia.

Atoms consist of configurations of changing motion and awareness, which is accompanied by inertia and consciousness. The periodic table expresses these configurations in a series of properties. Simple configurations express themselves as simple properties. Complex configurations, as in biological make up, express themselves as complex properties identified as life.

Human consciousness, or animation, is not the benchmark for life.

The benchmark for life is “a configuration of changing motion and awareness that is accompanied by inertia and consciousness.”

As atoms combine into complex macro molecules, the complexity of motion becomes capable of programmable instructions, such as, in DNA. This becomes the basis of life.

It is an error to think in terms of “life produces matter,” or “matter produces life.” A more accurate statement is,

Motion and awareness accompany each other and as they form into complex configurations, life and matter are generated.

Death is the disintegration of such configurations. Therefore both the body and the soul disintegrate at death. Neither the body nor the soul can exist independent of each other because their configurations go together.

As body disintegrates, the soul disintegrates too. The soul cannot survive the death of the body.

At birth, complex configuration of motion and awareness come together to produce a new body and a new soul. Certain configurations repeat. Thus we have continuation of forms and characteristics as species. There can even be continuation of certain personality traits and memory.

There may be the illusion of an identity moving from one body to another, but there is no permanent soul.

If there is any life after death, it is the motion and awareness of very fundamental kind as expressed in the properties of electromagnetism, atoms and molecules, which are yet to be known fully.

Unified Field, Inertia, Observer and Consciousness

space

The following is my answer to the question asked on Quora.com:

If energy/mass and space/time are all observer-dependent ways of construing the unified field, what is the observer? Is consciousness a property of the unified field?

.

UNIFIED FIELD

The theoretical ground state for this universe is inertia-less primordial field. It may be referred to as the unified field. This field, when disturbed, gives rise to the electromagnetic radiation that possesses inertia. The inertia of electromagnetic radiation then condenses into mass within an atom.

.

INERTIA

Inertia is primarily associated with mass. However, inertia is part of all phenomena. Motion is not infinite because motion is defined by inertia. There is a speed-limit to light because of inertia. The universe is kept together only because of inertia.

Inertia is analogous to friction. We can walk because there is friction. Similarly, a phenomenon exists because there is inertia. Inertia is ubiquitous just like motion. Inertia and motion are intimately related.

Energy may be looked upon as a form in which motion may be stored. Mass may be looked upon as a condensation of energy. We see inertia transitioning from wave-frequency to particle-mas within the atom.

Inertia may be plotted on a scale as described in INERTIA: A Summary

At the extreme left of this scale where inertia is approaching zero, we have the inertia-less unified field as “space.” At the extreme right of this scale, where inertia is approaching infinite, we have the extreme concentration of mass as “black hole.”

.

OBSERVER

In the broadest sense there is no observer separate from what is being observed. Both observer and observed are part of reality. Ultimately, it is reality observing itself. Science is observing the universe from the viewpoint of the universe.

The net velocity of the universe relative to itself is zero. So, the velocity of a scientific observer relative to the universe is zero.

.

CONSCIOUSNESS

Motion and awareness seem to be aspects of each other. The properties of animated organisms and inanimate objects are an expression of the motion and awareness that they are composed of. The universe is imbued with motion, and thus, it is imbued with awareness.

These ideas are expanded upon in What is Awareness, Scientifically?

The investigation to bring consistency to various concepts continues.

Inertia, Space and Location

 GabrielHorn

A state of motion is defined by INERTIA. The main confusion seems to be between physical and mental aspects of MOTION. So, there is physical inertia as well as mental inertia.

PHYSICAL INERTIA = FREQUENCY & MASS

MENTAL INERTIA = FIXEDNESS & EGO

Physical inertia is made up of the FREQUENCY of electromagnetic waves, and the MASS of material particles. On the spectrum of physical inertia, frequency appears in the lower half, and mass appears on the upper half.

Mental inertia is made up of the FIXEDNESS of attention, and the EGO of individuality. On the spectrum of mental inertia, fixedness appears in the lower half, and ego appears on the upper half.

Based on the concept of inertia we may define SPACE and LOCATION as follows.

PHYSICAL SPACE = A STATE DEVOID OF PHYSICAL INERTIA

MENTAL SPACE = A STATE DEVOID OF MENTAL INERTIA

Space may be defined as the lower end on the spectrum of inertia. Thus, physical space would be an electromagnetic wave of zero frequency and infinite wavelength.

Mental space would be a state of attention that is totally free.

PHYSICAL LOCATION = THE CENTER OF MASS

MENTAL LOCATION = THE CENTER OF EGO

A location may be defined as the upper end on the spectrum of inertia. Thus, physical location would be an infinite mass that is centered at a point. We visualize geometrical point to be dimensionless but discrete. On this concept of point we base the whole subject of geometry. But geometry is only as useful as it is consistent with physical observations.

Mental location would be an immense ego that is centered at a “point”. The “point” is visualized as the spiritual “I”. On this concept of “I” we base the whole subject of spirituality, where God is the ultimate “I”. But spirituality is only as useful as it is consistent with what is experienced.

The concept of SPIRIT is derived from the mental aspect of motion, just like the concept of MATTER is derived from the physical aspect of motion. Both spiritual and material aspects are present at every point on the spectrum of motion or inertia.

When we talk about SPIRIT, we are talking about mental aspects and not the physical aspect. So, SPIRIT has to do with mental space and time, whereas, MATTER has to do with physical space and time. We cannot talk about SPIRIT in terms of physical space and time as it has been done in many religions.
