Reality

reality3

Here is how the concept of reality is twisted in Scientology.

Reality is not looked at as “objective” by Hubbard. It is certainly observable, yet not necessarily objective. Each observer takes his own viewpoint… In any case, when we talk about reality, we talk about agreement. “Reality is the agreement upon perceptions and data in the physical universe. (All we can be sure is real is that on which we have agreed is real. Agreement is the essence of reality.” (Dn Ax. 113)

But…

The reality is what is out there. It does not consist of agreements or disagreements.

Hubbard equates reality with agreement, because reality can be changed by changing one’s agreements. Hubbard drew this conclusion from his experience with black magic. He could change a person’s reality by hypnotizing him.

But this is similar to changing the properties of light by filtering it. Hubbard was changing the reality of a person by installing agreements that acted like a filter.

Whether agreements are generated through hypnotism, or in more subtle ways, they act like filters. They take the form of beliefs, speculations, biases, prejudices, fixed ideas, etc., and they filter the reality.

The common denominator of such filters is that they generate inconsistencies in what is perceived. By becoming aware of inconsistencies one may then track down the filters that are influening one.

The true reality is the unfiltered reality. It does not consist of agreements or disagreements. And it is achieved by becoming aware of one’s filters and reducing their influence.

Affinity

Affinity

I had this realization on how the concept of AFFINITY got twisted in Scientology.

Hubbard defines affinity in terms of reaching. One reaches for something in order to have it close to one. Lack of affinity would be expressed in a withdraw. “Affinity is a phenomenon of space in that it expresses the willingness to occupy the same place as the thing which is loved or liked. The reverse of it would be antipathy (. . .) which would be the unwillingness to occupy the same space as or the unwillingness to approach something or someone.”

But…

True affinity would be the degree of comfort within oneself as one perceives the universe. And this makes one be inclusive of others and their viewpoints.

Affinity is just there, it is not created or enforced on oneself. One is already being.

Affinity has nothing to do with whether one can assume the beingness of another or not. The latter would require the ability to be a good actor. Just because an actor can pretend high affinity, it does not necessarily mean that he has high affinity.

Affinity is the degree to which one is comfortable within oneself and willing to look and perceive.

The point is that affinity cannot be forced on oneself. It just is, and it comes from being free of inconsistencies in one’s makeup.

A New Slant on Theta-MEST Theory

Shiva Shakti

Reference:  THETA & MEST / KHTK Postulate M-1

.

THETA is best postulated as an activity-less energy (Shakti in Hinduism).

MEST is best postulated as a dormant field (Shiva in Hinduism).

Both of these postulates exist side by side. Each complements the other like two sides of the same coin. I know this understanding is different from how Hubbard formulated it in Scientology.

MEST activates THETA. THETA disturbs MEST.

The disturbance is manifested as consciousness. The outer form of consciousness is the electromagnetic field. Consciousness is the pattern embedded within the electromagnetic field.

Both postulates – THETA & MEST – are static.

But the resulting interaction is dynamic from which come about

  • Awareness – space

  • Desire – time

  • Consciousness – energy

  • Identity – matter

Value of Scientology

Hub

Scientology largely consists of arbitrary hypotheses knitted together haphazardly. But there is also some value in it that attracts people.

In terms of valuable data from Scientology, on top of my list is AXIOM 11.

AXIOM 11: THE CONSIDERATIONS RESULTING IN CONDITIONS OF EXISTENCE ARE FOUR-FOLD.

(a) AS-IS-NESS is the condition of immediate creation without persistence, and is the condition of existence which exists at the moment of creation and the moment of destruction, and is different from other considerations in that it does not contain survival.

(b) ALTER-IS-NESS is the consideration which introduces change and therefore time and persistence, into an AS-IS-NESS to obtain persistency.

(c) IS-NESS is an apparency of existence brought about by the continuous alteration of an AS-IS-NESS. This is called, when agreed upon, Reality.

(d) NOT-IS-NESS is the effort to handle IS-NESS by reducing its condition through the use of force. It is an apparency and cannot entirely vanquish an IS-NESS.

It is AS-ISNESS that brings about relief in auditing action. I first encountered it on the first drill in Scientology called TR0 and it was mind blowing. It was from this drill that I came to recognize the value of seeing things as they are. It was later that I connected it with MINDFULNESS and understood what Buddha was talking about. This made perfect sense because Scientology acknowledges its roots in Buddhism.

.

Let’s take a deeper look at this axiom.

AXIOM 11: THE CONSIDERATIONS RESULTING IN CONDITIONS OF EXISTENCE ARE FOUR-FOLD.

Yes, the conditions of existence start with CONSIDERATIONS. Considerations form the guts of all manifestations. They are the atomic structure of the spiritual world. It is beautifully explained in Hubbard’s Phoenix lectures.

(a) AS-IS-NESS is the condition of immediate creation without persistence, and is the condition of existence which exists at the moment of creation and the moment of destruction, and is different from other considerations in that it does not contain survival.

Manifestations present themselves to us as we consider them, or as we look at them in NOW. There is no persistence in them. They change as we change our considerations, or change our attention. It is simply a recognition of what is there at any moment. They do not survive from one moment to next as we become fully aware of them. The “cycle” is completed in each moment. Creation and destruction happens there and then. Nothing is carried forward.

Anything that is carried forward is, therefore, not being viewed in its entirety. What a beautiful concept!

(b) ALTER-IS-NESS is the consideration which introduces change and therefore time and persistence, into an AS-IS-NESS to obtain persistency.

Anything that is carried forward is, therefore, not being viewed in its entirety. It is being altered in some fashion. Either one is not looking at all of it, or adding considerations to it that are not there. A good word is “filter”. We tend to look through filters of our expectations (rose colored glasses), assumptions, speculations, etc., and not see what is really there.

I believe that we can overcome this tendency to alter IS-NESS by applying mindfulness. Buddha’s view of mindfulness may be grasped through Mindfulness Exercises.

(c) IS-NESS is an apparency of existence brought about by the continuous alteration of an AS-IS-NESS. This is called, when agreed upon, Reality.

Even when we do not use “filters” consciously, and see things as they are, we are looking at an IS-NESS that is persisting.  This IS-NESS is persisting because there are unconscious filters (biases, prejudices, fixed ideas, etc.) in play that are continually altering what is there. We are looking at this IS-NESS through filters that we are not aware of. We now have two choices:

  1. Either we alter this IS-NESS further by consciously acquiring new filters,
  2. Or we become aware of existing filters and start recovering from the on-going alter-is.

One way to become aware of existing filters, and to recover from on-going alter-is, is to spot inconsistencies that are present in the IS-NESS.  Such inconsistencies provide a window into the filters that we are not conscious of. When we follow the inconsistencies to the realization of how we are contributing to them, we become aware of our existing filters. We can then put them aside.

(d) NOT-IS-NESS is the effort to handle IS-NESS by reducing its condition through the use of force. It is an apparency and cannot entirely vanquish an IS-NESS.

When one blames others or invalidates them, one is using force. One is also using force when one simply tries to impose one’s “reality” on others without engaging in discussions. This was addressed in Discussions and what needs to be avoided . Such use of force contributes to NOT-IS-NESS. By doing so one is denying oneself and others a good look at what is there.

Thus, by NOT-IS-NESS one ends up with a view, which is pretty much made up of one’s own filters. At present, the Church of Scientology is primarily devoted to NOT-IS-NESS. This is just the opposite of what it should be doing.

The above understanding has been very valuable to me.

Thetan and Exteriorization

exteriorization

Many people have “out-of-body” experiences, which they fondly remember for the rest of their lives. Such experiences are never under one’s control. They cannot be consciously repeated. Usually they do not repeat on their own either. A big deal is made out of “out-of-body” experiences in Scientology. In fact, Scientology has made itself a big $$$ “church” by exploiting this phenomenon.

.

For most people, body is an intimate part of their self. The Scientology command, “BE THREE FEET BACK OF YOUR HEAD” may simply serve to jar, momentarily, one’s fixed attention on the body. It may give one a glimpse of what it is like when the attention is not fixed on the body.

This command may not have any effect on a person whose attention is too fixed on the body, or whose attention is not fixed on the body in the first place.

Those who are affected by this command may believe that they have suddenly separated from the body and are ‘exterior’ to it. In actual case there is only a shift in viewpoint of the person. He didn’t even know how fixed his attention was on the body.

Scientology uses strange vocabulary, such as, ‘thetan’ and ‘exteriorization.’ It believes that the person is a spiritual entity, called ‘thetan’, which has separated itself from the body, called ‘exteriorization’. But what has actually happened here is a relief from fixation on the body. This sudden relief may be surprising, but soon that feeling of ‘exteriorization’ is gone.

Only a memory of that feeling remains. But it is enough for people to wanting to keep going up the Scientology “bridge”.
