The Anatomy of Space

Summary

Hubbard says, “Before energy can exist in this universe, space must exist.” It appears that space represents the extents of substance, where the spectrum of substance consists of thought, energy and matter. Initially, when there is a postulate made up of thought, space appears as the extents of that postulate. So space exists only as the extents of some postulate. Energy comes about with condensation of postulates.

Hubbard says, “His inability to create space is one of the most aberrative characteristics of the thetan…” This means that a person’s inability to postulate is his most aberrative characteristics. Hubbard’s concept of thetan represents the beingness of the person, which results from postulates.

Hubbard says, “He has become reduced to a point… for he has no space of his own but must depend upon bodies and other conditions to believe that he has space.” Actually, the thetan, as a thought, has much larger space than the material body. The apparent lack of space is due to the fixation of attention. When a thetan has no space, it means that all his awareness has condensed into energy and matter, for example, the body and its actions. In other words, all his thinking is identified with physical manifestations and he can’t think independently. 

Hubbard says, “The assignation of dimension is the essence of space, but even before dimension can be assigned, one must have viewpoint.” More simply, a person’s space is his awareness of what is there; and the viewpoint is how that awareness is framed. The viewpoint is determined by the persons postulates; and his freedom to change that viewpoint is limited by his fixations. So, the essence of space is the person’s ability to postulate and become aware.

Hubbard says, “The preclear has a viewpoint and is the centre of that viewpoint… Where he is aware of being aware is, however, his central viewpoint… he is yet as himself the centre of assignation of dimension where he is and as he is.” As stated above, a viewpoint provides the framework to a person’s awareness. It is made up of postulates pertaining to that subject or situation. The “center” of that viewpoint is, obviously, a postulate. Hubbard believes that “center” to be the location of the person’s beingness. Therefore, not only the thetan, but also its location, is a postulate. Whether a person is in or out of the body, depends on postulates and the condition of fixation.

To exteriorize from body, the person needs to become aware of the postulate that is keeping him fixated to the body. This postulate would be at the center of his viewpoint about his body, or about bodies in general. The person may start by examining his surroundings to extrovert his attention. He spots ridges (resistance to extroversion) and dissolves them. (See SOP Issue 3, Step IV). One may do creative processing as suggested in this section to finally exteriorize.

Creative processing (visualizing postulates) is very different from facsimile running. When one is attempting to handle a fixed viewpoint, it is best done with creative processing, not by running facsimiles.

Hubbard has his own definitions for space and time. All you need to know is that space represents the extents of a postulate; and, time represents the duration of a postulate. The postulates provide the frame of reference called the viewpoint. The viewpoint monitors our awareness. The center of that viewpoint may be considered our beingness.

Drills with space are actually drills that exercise the viewpoint. The purpose of exteriorization is to expand the viewpoint beyond the frame of reference provided by the body. If a person cannot do this then have him question everything that he is taking for granted, until all understanding becomes a oneness.

Summary

Here we have the very first Scientology Grade Chart. The goal is to accomplish Step I. Other steps are there to help you accomplish Step I. Once you are progressing well on Step I, you may continue to apply it to various aspects of your life. These steps are as follows from the viewpoint of Subject clearing.

NOTE: Under the section CREATIVE PROCESSING Hubbard says:
“Using Standard Operating Procedure, Issue 3, as given in this volume, the auditor yet takes a very thorough assessment of his preclear with an E-Meter. He discovers, in accordance with information in this book, what the preclear is unable to start, change, stop; create, alter, destroy; be, do or have; differentiate, associate or identify; on each and every one of the eight dynamics and their component parts. The auditor makes a complete list. This is the Can’t list. Exteriorized, if possible, or interiorized as in the later numbered cases, the preclear is then made to “mock-up” illusions about each one of these Can’ts and to change the size, character and position of the illusion or any part thereof in space, shift it in time simply by knowing it has been shifted by him, until at last the preclear is able to handle the whole object of the Can’t with complete facility.”

STEP VII—PRESENT TIME BODY ORIENTATION: The purpose is to orient your attention by having you recognize, first, the  parts of your body; then the things in the room; and then the geography of your location. There is no thinking involved here. The whole idea is to get in intimate touch with present reality by directly experiencing it through physical senses. After you complete this step, go to step VI.

STEP VI—ARC STRAIGHT WIRE: The purpose is to orient you, first, to your real memories; and then to your imagination that is not real. Locks are minor incidents of misunderstanding where attention gets stuck. You alternately recall a lock from your memory, and then consciously imagine something that did not happen. Do this until you can comfortably differentiate between the real and the imaginary. Upon completion, go to Step I.  If there is any difficulty, go to Step VII.  

STEP V—BLACK AND WHITE CONTROL PROCESSING:  The purpose of this step is to overcome resistance to postulating. Make a list of what you would, or would not, create or destroy. Write down items in the order they come to your mind. Select an item that would not create, or not destroy. Visualize to create what you would not create, or visualize to destroy what you would not destroy. Do it lightly and on a gradient so it is fun. Do this with all such items on your list. In the next part of this step, you work to overcome the fear of unknown. Mock up stuff that is unclear and confusing (black spots, black crosses, etc.). Then mock up and stuff that is clear and understandable (white spots, white crosses, etc.). Do creative processing with these items as described in the materials. Do as much as you can. Do it lightly and on a gradient so it is fun. There may be “black” things that introvert your attention, such as, sickness, criminality, police, secrets, etc. Mix them up with “white” things that help extrovert your attention. Continue to mock up this stuff and move it around, until your attention extroverts. Do lot of creative processing as described in a subsequent section. Then go to step I. If there is any difficulty, go to Step VI.

STEP IV—RIDGE RUNNING: The purpose of this step is to overcome ridges in the mind. Ridges are fixations where attention gets stuck and it is difficult to move through. It may be something you are holding on to, and which is difficult to let go. The confusion in these areas appears as “black,” and the clarity of understanding as “white.” Black may also appear when nothing is there. Start on this step by giving yourself the command to walk. Wait to see if this command runs into any resistance in the mind. If so then locate the ridge, such as, “Can’t walk” or “Too bored to walk.” Put attention on this ridge along with the original command “to walk” until the ridge dissolves. Then give the command to walk again. Do this until all the ridges to this command have dissolved. Repeat this procedure with commands, “Listen,” “Talk,” “Nod,” “Move,” etc. Take up “Look” as the last command. If you can do all this, start with Step I again. If there is any difficulty, go to Step V.

Step III—SPACE PROCESSING: The purpose of this step is to free your viewpoint from the fixations with respect to the body. Usually the viewpoint is fixated on the body. Visualize yourself inside the body in the same orientation. Visualize yourself inside the body with feet upwards, and then gradually turn the feet around. Continue with the visualizations as suggested in the materials. You may visualize skydiving and bungee jumping, falling upwards, flying like superman, etc. You may visualize yourself inside animal bodies or even in the bodies of other people. See what happens when you do so. Finally, assume your normal orientation inside your body and go to step 1.

STEP II—BY ORIENTATION: The purpose of this step is to extrovert the attention with respect to the body in a very direct manner. These are all mental visualizations but they do enlarge the viewpoint with respect to the body. Here one is imagining assistance of various “beams” to move one’s viewpoint around as if it is something physical. It is pushing and pulling oneself out of the back of the head. It is raising and lowering oneself while outside and to move to various parts of the room while still outside. But these are just postulates. This is what  an artist, architect or a scientist commonly does without even thinking about it. “Old lines with terminals fixed to him” are instances of your attention being fixed on certain people, things, places, etc., due to past incomplete communications. By consciously putting attention on such instances you can drain them of their influence. The influence exists only because of your unawareness. Hubbard makes this dramatic so it appeals to people at lower tone levels. If you can do all this, go to Step I. If there is any difficulty, go to Step III.

Step I—-POSITIVE EXTERIORIZING: This step is to dramatically free your attention completely from any fixation on the body. Most people have their attention fixed at the center of their head. If it can be anywhere else, it is a big deal. You command yourself to be a foot back of your head. If this happens then you follow up with actions as described in the materials. This can be a breakthrough for some people, though it is a common action for artists and other professionals to place their viewpoint at other locations. About repairing items in the body, it is a matter of putting attention at that location and simply applying the discipline of Subject Clearing. About creating and destroying your own illusions, consider the postulates that come to your mind and examine them against the principle of oneness. This is an ongoing process. It should be combined with general subject clearing. If there is any difficulty, go to Step II.

Postulate Processing

Summary

Postulate processing is that processing which addresses the postulates, evaluations and conclusions of a person at the level of self-determined thought.

Hubbard says, “Actually energy is produced by the thetan simply by postulating that it will be in existence.” A thetan represents beingness of the person. It may appear to be the source of a postulate, but the thetan itself is a postulate. So the actual source of the postulate is unknowable, and the thetan itself is a part of the postulate that appears. The self-determination boils down to full awareness of the postulate.

Hubbard says, “This condition has been misused by most thetans.” This means that many postulates have violated the constraint of oneness (continuity, consistency and harmony). When that happens we have an anomaly, and aberrations follow. These aberrations are erroneously assigned to the thetan, instead of recognizing them as violations of oneness, and focusing on resolving those violations.

Hubbard says, “The thetan… has set up the postulate that every time he makes a postulate a reverse postulate will occur which he will not know about.” The truth is that a postulate is made to know the Unknowable; and one knows with certainty only when the postulate fulfills the constraint of oneness. The actual dichotomy is “Unknowable-knowable.” But Hubbard shifts this dichotomy to “Know-know not” as if one knows and then decides to know not. That is an arbitrary reversal and an aberration.

Hubbard says, “It is not true that postulates have to be located all through the facsimiles and worn out by repetition.” A facsimile exists only because there is an anomaly (discontinuity, inconsistency or disharmony). Going through the facsimile again and again may not resolve the anomaly, because its resolution may require awareness in a larger context than the facsimile provides. That larger context may be obtained by using the principle of oneness.

Hubbard says, “The most aberrative things in that facsimile are what the preclear himself decided.” This means that the evaluations and conclusion are made without reevaluating beingness. Here we have a fixation on beingness. This may violate the principle of oneness. As this fixation continues the evaluations and conclusions become increasingly unwieldy.

Hubbard says, “When doing creative processing and moving objects and energy in created space and time, the preclear is doing this by making postulates.” Hubbard doesn’t recognize that space and time are by-products of substance (thought, radiation and matter). The postulate of beingness, which is taken for granted, provides the background of space and time. The subsequent postulates for motion of radiation and objects then provide additional space and time. It is not clear how one postulates space and time directly as Hubbard assumes. 

Hubbard says, “Moving time, as in any other postulate is knowingness not viewingness.” Unfortunately, under the guise of knowingness, anything can be assumed, without having to explain it. Hubbard ignores the scientific method that operates on the principle of oneness, and allows postulates to be made arbitrarily without knowable constraints in his theory.

Hubbard says, “The entire subject of postulates is the subject of certainty and self-belief.” This is where self-hypnotism comes in under the guise of knowingness. This is the key to understanding where Scientology has gone wrong. Once the principle of oneness is applied as a constraint in making postulates, a person can run postulate processing with certainty, and aberrations are handled rapidly.

What is missing in Hubbard’s theory is the first natural law that applies to thought. This law is the principle of ONENESS. This principle acts as the overall constraint to what can be postulated. When no rules or laws are applied, aberrations enter into one’s perception and thinking.
