OT VIII & History of Man

Reference: Book I: Postulate Mechanics (Text Book)

A version of OT VIII prescribes studying and word clearing of four lectures by Hubbard on History of Man. The main points from these lectures are summarized below.

History of Man 1: Organization of Data (5203C10A, 10 March 1952)

  1. Scientology is portrayed here as a route for knowing. Any route for knowing involves assimilation of data.
  2. Only data that is not assimilated at all is beyond experience. This is what the “unconscious” consists of.
  3. All knowledge starts with THOUGHT because nothing can be known without thought.
  4. Thought is a substance like matter and energy, simply because it can be sensed.
  5. Thought has its own “physics” that needs to be fully worked out.
  6. A theta line represents thought that contains a long series of patterns.
  7. Such patterns can be static (fixed) or dynamic (moving).
  8. Thicker patterns appear as emotions. Really thick patterns acquire mass and make up the organism.

.

History of Man 2: Main and Sub-Theta Line (5203C10B, 10 March 1952)

  1. An individual is essentially a long sequence of thought patterns arranged against time.
  2. Scientology uses E-meter to trace back these patterns to understand the nature of the individual.
  3. Scientology postulates a main body of thought (Theta) that thinks up the physical universe (MEST).
  4. Theta interacts with MEST and becomes individualized (as thetans) through experience.
  5. Thus there is individuation (separation from knowingness) and the beginning of a time track.
  6. These thought patterns gradually become increasingly complex and acquire complex properties. NOTE: According to Postulate Mechanics (PM) there is increasing inertia and decreasing motion from thought to energy to matter. This is accompanied by increasing symbolization as it happens in higher computer languages.
  7. Hubbard associates this increasing complexity with increasing individuation and decreasing knowingness. NOTE: According to PM, no knowingness is lost as long as harmony is maintained despite complexity. Tone level decreases only with decrease in harmony.
  8. The changes occur across lifetimes as theta continues through the theta line, and records death and preconception.
  9. There is also a protoplasm (genetic) line that continues through procreation and it does not record death and preconception. NOTE: Theta line and genetic line are not really separate, but are integrated.
  10. There is also a dead man line, where thetan maintains attention on the identity of past bodies that it occupied. NOTE: There is no separate thetan. There are only static and dynamic patterns that characterize the theta/genetic line.
  11. Hubbard believes that a thetan can inhabit multiple bodies simultaneously. NOTE: This is Hubbard’s interpretation of the phenomena generated by facsimiles.

.

History of Man 3: Theta and Genetic Lines of Earth (5203C10C, 10 March 1952)

  1. According to Hubbard, Theta is thought and MEST is matter universe, and they are very different.
  2. There is a theta body line (thetan) and a MEST body line (genetic line), which are two very different lines.
  3. Hubbard sees a person having one individuality (thetan) but several different personalities (genetic lines).
  4. Engrams farther back on the track are mutual to many current personalities.
  5. The individuality is strengthened as its different personalities come together and integrate.
  6. According to Hubbard, two such personalities can be in two different bodies far apart, but sharing the same thetan.
  7. The more “individual” one is (down the line as a personality), the more MEST he is.
  8. There are engrams that are common to the whole human race.
  9. Theta line is that line where the individual uses the genetic line to make one or many bodies that pass through time.
  10. Hubbard’s confidence for the above theory comes from his use of the e-meter.

.

History of Man 4: Principal Incidents on the Theta Line (5203C10D, 10 March 1952)

  1. According to Hubbard, humans are part of an evolutionary race, which goes back into the depths of this galaxy.
  2. There is a Theta-I (individual) line that goes way back billions of years to the origin (incident one).
  3. The Incident One is the first separation of theta, which is a light facsimile.
  4. And there is a Theta-E (earth) line that goes back from two hundred to a hundred thousand years ago.
  5. Theta-E starts with an incident when the person first arrived on Earth.
  6. The protoplasm (genetic) line (on earth) is the cycle of conception, birth, procreation, conception, and so on. Death is not part of it.
  7. This theta line is the cycle of preconception, conception, birth, procreation, death, jump-off, preconception, and so on.
  8. There is also a Facsimile One—basic on the service facsimile chain—which consists of a heavy incident.
  9. Facsimile One consists of an original, highly mystic race being invaded by an invader, highly electronic, race.
  10. The electronics destroyed the mystic power and started to impersonate theta.
  11. The second incident millions of years later was of being rounded up and shipped off to Earth where he joined in with the genetic line.
  12. Hubbard believed that there’s a race existing right now out in outer space, which is not interested in us, but some of us may contact it telepathically
  13. Hubbard knew that this data obtained through the use of e-meter shall stretch people’s credulity; therefore, he made it confidential at OT Levels.

Comments

Hubbard obtained his data by questioning preclears connected to E-meter. The way he interpreted the E-meter reactions to his questions became the source of his data. Obviously, the interpretation depended on the questions asked. The questions depended on the theory that Hubbard formed in his mind. Hubbard’s theory depended on the postulates he started out with.

Hubbard postulates Theta, which dreams up MEST (matter, energy, space and time). The purpose of Theta is to bring about MEST and to be in total control of it. Theta breaks off into thetans which are essentially the spiritual beings, which humans are. There are MEST bodies separate from such beings, which they control. Their purpose is to control the MEST (physical) universe. These postulates of Hubbard put Theta and MEST at odds right off the bat.

From general observations, the universe is a system that can be sensed. Anything substantial enough to be sensed can be defined as substance. Matter is obviously a substance. But energy and thought are substances too because they can be sensed. We observe that the universe is made up of substance (matter, energy and thought). This substance combines harmoniously to form the universe as a single system that runs on precise laws.

Now, Hubbard’s Theta may be compared to thought-substance, and MEST may be compared to matter-substance. Of course, thought is different from matter; but both, being substance, are in harmony and not at odds. Therefore, Hubbard’s postulates produce a theory of the universe that is inconsistent; and, therefore, unscientific.

Where auditing is concerned, it is basically an investigation that a person is conducting to understand himself. He is an integrated spirit-mind-body system. There is no separate thetan controlling the body. His mind consists of assimilated data (memories) and unassimilated data (facsimiles). The process of auditing is to convert unconscious facsimiles into conscious memories.

During auditing of facsimiles, data may come up that is surprising or completely dissociated with reality. There are dreams and hallucinations. But any such data has value only if it resolves some deep doubts, confusions or anomalies. Otherwise, no significance should be attached to it.

The goal of auditing is to resolve anomalies to attain a state of harmony. While auditing himself, a person should never deviate from this goal.
