Reference: Scientology OT Levels
According to Postulate Mechanics:
- DIANETICS handles Engrams, Secondaries and Locks.
- SCIENTOLOGY GRADES handle Fixed beliefs and Misjudgments.
- OT LEVELS handle the underlying Postulates and Misconceptions.
- The OT Level I handles Beingness by broadening it.
- The OT Level II handles Beingness through the theory of GPM.
- The OT Level III handles Beingness through the theory of Body Thetans.
At OT III, the new datum introduced is that a person is not a single being, but a composite being made of BODY THETANS (BTs). These BTs are to be audited, so that they become clear and go away to pick up their own bodies.

The Body Thetan
LRH says, ”One’s body is a mass of individual thetans stuck to oneself or to the body. One has to clean them off by running Incident One then Incident Two. It is a long job, requiring care, patience and good auditing. You are running beings. They respond like any preclear. Some large, some small. Thetans believed they were one. This is the primary error. Good luck.”
These body thetans appear to be units of deep programming much like AI (artificial intelligence) that manifest as body sensations. The body thetan (BT) appears to be a part of one’s beingness like the intimate viewpoints one has. Getting rid of it, at first, may seem like getting rid of some aspect of oneself.
When you are running a body thetan, you are essentially sorting out a viewpoint. This viewpoint may be associated with some body sensation that originated in some experience. A group of body thetans (BTs) crushed or held together by some mutual bad experience is called a cluster. This may be a complex viewpoint acquired through some traumatic experience.
It would require great patience and care to recognize that a viewpoint (body thetan) is not really a part of one’s self. One’s self is pure awareness that has no identity with anything in the physical universe.
According to Subject Clearing, a body thetan would be a special kind of anomaly that affects one’s viewpoint. It consists of something that one accepted without assimilating it.
Regarding cleaning up Body Thetans, Hubbard says, “One has to clean them off by running Incident One then Incident Two.” But according to Dianetics theory one wold run Incident Two first. He would run Incident One only when the Incident Two does not erase.

Incident Two

The key aspect of an engram is a “shock” at its core. In Incident Two this “shock” is portrayed as an H-bomb explosion. In one can locate the area of explosion when running a body thetan, and experience this explosion as a “shock,” one is doing extremely well. Other details may pass by very fast to be recognized. One may catch only glimpses of them.
One would then be freed up of the viewpoint that one is running as a body thetan. This is what one wants.

Incident One

LRH Note on Incident 1 (Transcript) Addition
Incident I is run when the body thetan (viewpoint) remains embedded after running Incident II. On Incident I, if one can experience the effort to stop, one is doing very well. One would then easily let the viewpoint (body thetan) go.

Understanding OT III
When a person receives a sensation he gives it meaning by making postulates. As long as he is conscious that he has made those postulates, he knows that he is not those postulates. Therefore, he is not identified with those sensations and postulates. But the moment he becomes unaware of having made those postulates he becomes identified with them.
The earlier are the sensations, and the older are the postulates, the more likely it is that a person is identified with them. These postulates have become part of who he thinks he is.
The concept of BT (body thetan) basically represents such identification on an “atomic” scale. Running a BT (body thetan) through Incident Two makes one aware that there is an identification that does not make sense. Running the BT through Incident One makes one aware of the postulate that was made and the moment of identification.
But to be able to run through these two incidents, the BT must not be hung up on the earlier grades. So, a person must be very familiar with all the earlier grade processes and how to run them. The subject clearing approach with The 12 Aspects of Mindfulness (instead of the E-meter) makes the auditing very fast and easy to do.
.
Running OT III
The key aspect here is that one needs only to “intend” to run the BT through grade processes and OT III incidents.
LRH Notes on Running OT III (Transcript)
- Locate a body thetan, or cluster, as a sensation, or an area of pressure, on the surface of the body, inside the body, or in the environment around the body.
- Note down this body thetan and run it on the following steps until it blows. Do not start on another body thetan until then.
- Run Incident 2. If you run Incident 2 as far as “the Pilot” it blows up or loosens up the cluster.
- Do not speak your commands. Just “intend” them. A BT controls easily.
- Any BT or BTs will blow on Incident 2. Those who don’t go away can be run on Incident 1’s.
- After a BT leaves, some other BT may copy it, or the incident just run.
- Make sure you run Incident 1’s on anything you find so no strays are left.
- When you can find no more on which to run Incident 1’s, once more look over the body and locate a sensation or pressure area. Run another Incident 2. Then Incident 1’s on any.
- Severe impacts and experiences ALSO make clusters. If you have found a cluster (pressure area) that does not respond or disintegrate to Incident 2 running, get Dianetic auditing. List “What impact or incident would cause a cluster?” and R3R on the items found. Then do more Incident 1’s to clean up the strays with solo.
- A very SP BT can be run on grades and Power and should then respond to Incident 2 and Incident 1.
- There are hundreds of BT’s you will find. If you find none, get audited on Dianetics in general and as above. If you find only one or two, get the Dianetic Impact List done.
- Do Incident 2 and Incident 1’s on what you can find to begin with.
When you do the above steps with The 12 Aspects of Mindfulness as your guide, you will do fine.

EP of OT III
LRH NOTE ON OT III EP (Transcript)
You run OT III on body thetans that are attached to self. Here self is pure awareness that is not identified with anything in the physical universe. OT III EP is achieved when all body thetan (imposed viewpoints) have disappeared.
.
Misconceptions on OT III
- The word “thetan” is used in the sense of self. It is defined as something independent of the body. However, the SELF may be defined correctly as follows: “The Self is the capability that can potentially become aware of the whole universe. But self, as it actually exists, is identified with elements of the universe. The self is not aware of such identification. It is, therefore, limited in its awareness. The identified self extends itself as a mind to establish awareness. The mind then extends itself as a body to execute its directives.”
- The word “body thetan” is used in the sense of something extraneous attached to oneself. It may be defined more correctly as “a particle of identification.” This appears as a viewpoint and manifests as a sensation.
- The word “cluster” is defined as a group of body thetans crushed or held together by some mutual bad experience. However, it may be defined more correctly as “a complex identification.” Its complexity arises from a traumatic experience.
- Dianetic engrams are like superclusters of BTs that should already been run before this point. When no superclusters are there, Dianetic techniques will only stir up random BTs or identifications.
Many errors occur in auditing on OT III because of these misconceptions.
.
OT III and Dianetics
OT III is a generalization of Dianetics. Instead of running incidents you run sensations, which are “atoms” of incidents. With this understanding, a review of DMSMH may be fascinating.

Gains on OT III
The gains on OT levels have been fantastic at times, but not uniformly so. I am sure the clarity of OT levels will be isolated and presented over time. Here is a sincere expression of what is possible on OT levels:

Comments
This HCOB re OT III makes more sense when the term “body thetan” is replaced by a “particle of identification.”

The problem LRH has faced mostly is getting others to apply his tech. Yes, there have been failures on OT3 as well, and LRH traced it to inappropriate application of tech.
The problem may be traced to two source.
(1) Tech being easy to understand and apply.
(2) The student being able to grasp the tech appropriately.
Hubbard came up with Study Tech as a solution, but the weakness of study tech is that it uses existing definitions which can be inadequate.
Hubbard then came up with Data Series as a solution, so that the student could appropriately evaluate the context and the definitions, but the weakness of Data Series is that it lacks the overall ideal scene for logic, and it is not that easy to understand.
Hubbard then implemented the policy of “standard tech” where one had no flexibility in interpreting what Hubbard wrote. This then simply transmitted the anomalies in Hubbard’s thinking and writing to the student.
By replacing E-meter with Mindfulness, the liability of self-conditioning is eliminated from Scientology.
The Freezone still uses the E-meter. It should replace it with mindfulness.
OT III is a generalization of Dianetics. Instead of running incidents you run sensations, which are “atoms” of incidents.
Under all that mumbo-jumbo of OT III all you are clearing up is the SHOCK when a sensation was first experienced.
