August 26, 2026 – I am greatly saddened to hear that Chris passed away on Aug 25. I have lost a great friend with whom I discussed philosophy and science regularly. I felt something was not right when, starting November 2025, I stopped hearing from him.
Chris’ wife Shelley informed me of the following: “Three weeks ago, he began falling and dropping things. We expected the CT scan to indicate some inner ear infection or something. It revealed a 2 cm mass deep in the middle of his brain. It was inoperable, but we were hoping the biopsy could indicate some helpful path of radiation and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the tumor’s aggressive growth, in addition to swelling and bleeding in the brain did not allow us to pursue other paths. Chris was in hospice for 2 days, and passed on Tuesday August 25, with loving family around him.”
I shall miss a wonderful friend!

Vinaire, What a nice thing to do. I am really touched. I especially like your use of “the man in front of the screen” and once more am touched that you have bothered to remember that reference and can see me in that way. The “TV Snow” experiment is not something that many people will ever know about but for me was an excellent moment of profound leveling. I think only you and Rafael bothered to take note of it but that is more than enough acknowledgement. Thank you one more time.
You have deserved this acknowledgement for some time, because you have been helping my thinking all along.

That’s too bad because I was feeling pretty amazing for a little while there! My ego has never been so full of pomp and circumstance! You know I’m kidding but the first thing I did this morning was send the link to my wife (already at work slaving while I dilly dally) and she wrote back, “Vinaire is now officially permanently invited to our house. I love the people who appreciate the people I love! What an extraordinary tribute. I got tears in my eyes!”
I won’t ever win a Nobel or Pulitzer, but this was pretty dang close. Thank you one more time.
