Postulate Mechanics is a new subject that approaches the spiritual aspects of the universe scientifically. It uses the technique of SUBJECT CLEARING to ensure the completeness and precision of its content. The following key words and definitions act as stable data that introduce this subject. For other key words, please see PM: Glossary.

NOTE: “PM” is the abbreviation for Postulate Mechanics. The content of this subject is open to further refinement and update as long as they comply with the postulate of ONENESS.

POSTULATE MECHANICS
The universe is knowable. It is substantial enough to be sensed through its properties of matter, radiation, and thought. For matter we have Classical Mechanics. For radiation we have Quantum Mechanics. For thought, we now propose this subject called POSTULATE MECHANICS. Postulate mechanics deals with postulates, which form the reality of this universe.

POSTULATE
We sense this universe because it is substantial. It forms our entire consciousness. We are conscious of it because it has acquired a meaning. This meaning is provided by POSTULATES. Dictionaries define ‘postulate’ as a creative thought that is claimed to be true. It is then used as a basis for reasoning. For example, Einstein’s theory of relativity is based on the postulate, “The speed of light in a vacuum is constant for all observers, regardless of their motion.” This postulate has profound implications for our understanding of space and time. In general, a postulate brings clarity to what we sense. All scientific theories, philosophic rumination and religious faiths have begun with postulates.

SUBJECT CLEARING
Subject Clearing is a method of reasoning, in which elements/concepts in a subject are collected and arranged in a sequence. Please note that there can be many different levels in a subject, and a person may address one level at a time. The elements of a level are collected until all of them are accounted for. These elements are then stacked up in the sequence of most significant to the least. Mindfulness is the key to arrive at the correct sequence. Please note that an element is more significant than another that is derived from it. This sequential arrangement facilitates the detection of missing, contradictory or arbitrary elements. These are anomalies by definition. The most significant anomaly is then taken up and traced further in a similar manner, until that trail leads to a discovery and a resolution. This whole process is then repeated again and again, until the problem or confusion in that subject is resolved. This includes the subject of life. The Subject Clearing process helps revise or redefine concepts in a subject and update their definitions. It also detects and corrects misconceptions prevalent in the society.

UNIVERSE
This book of Postulate Mechanics addresses the subject of the UNIVERSE and the life within it. The universe is the outcome of postulates, because postulates make the universe knowable to us. The first postulate is that the universe has substance that can be sensed. This postulate makes the universe exist for us. The next postulate is that this substance is continuous, consistent and harmonious. This postulate makes the universe real to us, being integrated in all its aspects. The word UNIVERSE literally means “combined into one.” It is looked upon as a single whole.

LIFE
The life appears as a form made of substance that has inherent motion. We observe that thought has a form and inherent motion, so does radiation, such as light; and so does matter, such as the particles of atom. These are evolving forms. As life evolves, its form and inherent motion become increasingly complex. And so we have objects, minerals, chemicals, cells, plants, animals and humans. This evolution has led to self-animation and intelligence. New abilities may emerge in future as life has the potential to postulate and become aware within the constraints of oneness.

CONCEPTUAL LOGIC
Conceptual logic involves starting with broader but fewer concepts; and continuing with narrower but more numerous concepts, while ensuring consistency. This logic may be used to explore any subject—even a subject as large as the universe, and life within it.

CONCEPTUAL TRUTH
Conceptual truth involves oneness (continuity, consistency and harmony) among concepts. A single concept is neither true nor false in itself. The degree of continuity, consistency and harmony may also serve as ‘evidence’ of truth of a concept within a given context.

ANOMALY
An ANOMALY is something that doesn’t make sense. Actually, an anomaly is a violation of ONENESS, in the form of discontinuity (missing data), inconsistency (contradictory data), or disharmony (arbitrary data). An anomaly is basically a misalignment among emotion and concepts. As you look closely at an anomaly, it resolves into emotion and concepts. The concepts arrange themselves into a consistent order. This allows missing, contradictory and arbitrary data to be straightened out emotionally and conceptually. The anomaly then blows.

CRITERION OF TRUTH
The criterion of truth is absence of anomalies. The lesser are the anomalies present, the greater is the truth in a subject.

KNOWLEDGE
As sensations are assimilated, they, ultimately, lead to knowledge of the phenomena one is looking at. Knowledge thus obtained is applied to improve the conditions in life. Knowledge was, at first, conceived through philosophy, and applied through religion. Over time knowledge has been made more precise through the systematic approach of science. The knowledge that is needed today is about the understanding of the mind, so the potential of a person can be maximized.

The Scientific Method

The curiosity to know has progressed from religious speculations about life to extroverted philosophical inquiry of the universe. This inquiry then gave birth to the systematic approach of science. 

The modern scientific approach is based on observing more closely to formulate a hypothesis, and then using that hypothesis to arrive at some new conclusions. The next step is to verify those conclusions through further observations. 

Consistency is extremely important in such verifications. If the new conclusions cannot be shown to be consistent with life experiences, then one has to go back and work more on improving the hypothesis. If the conclusions are consistent with life experiences, then the hypothesis is accepted as a new theory. However, such acceptance is provisional because the verification can never be absolute. For the future may present observations that are not entirely consistent with the theory.

In today’s science, mathematics has become an important part of formulating and verifying a hypothesis. The scientist makes a mathematical model of the hypothesis. He, then, checks that model for mathematical consistency. This has become an important step in the scientific development. But, the mathematical consistency is not the same as consistency with life experiences.

In the past, consistency of a hypothesis was tested in the live environment of the laboratory. The scientist devised experiments that could be conducted using lab equipment. This was closer to life than mathematics and provided live verification. However, science has advanced to a point that such lab experimentation is not always possible, especially in the case of sub-atomic and cosmic phenomena.

Einstein’s theory of relativity could not be verified until the Solar eclipse of 1920. Still many doubts exist regarding this theory. In fact, the theory of relativity was not even considered when the Nobel Prize was awarded to Einstein. But Einstein also advanced a novel idea of conducting thought experiments to verify a hypothesis beyond the mathematical logic. Such thought experiments were closer to the logic of life experiences. They only need to be devised carefully. 

Once again the criterion of thought experiments had to be consistency; only that consistency was in terms of ideas. In addition, it was expected that the logical train of ideas would have no gaps. Also, there would be no arbitrary ideas that do not fit in the overall picture. In short, the criterion of a thought experiment would be continuity, consistency and overall harmony of ideas. 

But, if we look carefully, the criterion of continuity, consistency and harmony applies to all experimentation, whether it is mathematical or lab oriented, and it even defines the Scientific Method itself. The basis of the scientific method may be stated as the following twelve aspects of mindfulness.

Implants and “Oneness”

Hubbard wrote in SCN 8-8008: Identity versus Individuality:

“One of the control mechanisms which has been used on thetans is that when they rise in potential they are led to believe themselves one with the universe. This is distinctly untrue. Thetans are individuals. They do not as they rise up the scale, merge with other individualities. They have the power of becoming anything they wish while still retaining their own individuality. They are first and foremost themselves. There is evidently no Nirvana. It is the feeling that one will merge and lose his own individuality that restrains the thetan from attempting to remedy his lot. His merging with the rest of the universe would be his becoming matter. This is the ultimate in cohesiveness and the ultimate in affinity, and is at the lowest point of the tone-scale. One declines into a brotherhood with the universe. When he goes up scale, he becomes more and more an individual capable of creating and maintaining his own universe. In this wise (leading people to believe they had no individuality above that of MEST) the MEST universe cut out all competition.”

Thus, Hubbard believed that oneness is an implant. In his mind, oneness conflicted with his idea of individuality. To him, accepting oneness amounted to discrediting individuality.

But oneness does not equate to sameness. A table and a chair are both made of matter, but that does not mean that they are the same thing. Energy consists of a whole spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, but that does not mean that all electromagnetic radiation is the same. An individual is a part of mankind, but that does not mean all individuals are the same.

So, why is Hubbard so ticked about oneness of the universe?

All that Hubbard is ticked about is thought condensing into energy and matter. To him thetan is a form of thought; and, the universe is a form of energy and matter. And the two should not be regarded as the same. Well, that is alright. But does oneness means that everything the same?

No, it doesn’t. Oneness comes from the elimination of discontinuities, inconsistencies and disharmonies. It results in clarity rather than sameness. You see thought as thought, energy as energy, and matter as matter. All three are forms of substance that make up this universe.

And under these major categories, you see a chair as chair, light as light, and a particular idea as that particular idea. You come to see things as they are.

And this is the oneness of the universe because it is all connected by the clarity of knowingness.

The universe is the knowable part of the dichotomy, “Unknowable-knowable.” And that is all it means. All things knowable are part of this universe. If the Cause is knowable, it is a part of the knowable universe.

So, Hubbard had a misunderstanding about oneness of the universe as it is viewed in Buddhism. He invalidated Buddhism because of his own deep misconception. A deep misconception is the result of an implant. So, we are looking here at an implant of Hubbard.

More on Oneness

The universe is sensed as a spectrum of substance (thought, energy and matter). By interacting among each other, thought, energy and matter acquire forms and meaning. These forms and meanings appear as patterns within thought, energy and matter.

The basic patterns may be referred to as the laws of nature. These laws must be consistent among themselves to provide a complete picture of the universe. This consistency extends from continuity at one end to harmony at the other. Together, the continuity, consistency and harmony of these patterns represent the principle of oneness. 

In his Theta-MEST theory, Hubbard postulated theta (thought) to be separate from MEST (energy and matter). According to his theory, theta impinged on MEST and then separated gathering the laws of MEST. There existed a tension between theta and MEST, without which the universe could not exist. Therefore, a merger or oneness between theta and MEST was unthinkable to Hubbard. Hubbard’s fear of losing his individuality expressed itself through his own flawed postulate that theta is separate and independent of the physical universe.

In truth, thought is a part of the spectrum of substance, just like energy and matter are. The integration of thought, energy and matter has resulted in this knowable universe. Spiritual and physical elements are not separate, but they form two aspects of this universe. Anomalies arise during the course of interactions among thought, energy and matter. But as these anomalies are resolved, evolution occurs.

The Spiritual-Physical

The universe represents all that is knowable. This universe has generally been divided into spiritual and physical. 

The physical are those aspects of the universe that are sensed as ‘energy’ and ‘matter’. These sensations are given meaning, and so they acquire identities that we study in the subject of science.

The spiritual is assigned the remaining aspects of the universe, which are thought and awareness. But thought is a category of substance that is sensed like energy and matter. 

So, thought may be moved to be with  ‘energy’ and ‘matter’. This reorganization of “physical” may be called substance. This leaves “spiritual” to be pure awareness. This reorganization of “spiritual” may be called Self. 

The reorganized dichotomy of Self-Substance is a more scientifically precise division of the universe than the dichotomy Spiritual-Physical.

Misconception

It is a key misconception to think that the spiritual phenomena, which we can inherently sense and know, is not part of this universe. The truth is that anything knowable is part of this universe.

The Unknowable

The Unknowable

Beyond knowable, there is Unknowable. There can only be a vague sense of the Unknowable. We become aware only when we sense something and are able to interpret it correctly. 

To know the unknowable, one has to postulate what may be there. We know what impinges on our senses by symbolizing it and giving it meaning. Reality is established by the oneness (continuity, consistency and harmony) of all that we postulate. We cannot know more than the meanings we assign. 

When we look at the dichotomy “Creator-creation,” we find both of these items in the category of knowable. Similarly, both items of the dichotomy, “Cause-effect,” are in the category of knowable. Again, both items of the dichotomy “Spiritual-physical” are knowable. Actually, the whole Universe is knowable. When it comes to Unknowable, we simply cannot talk about it.

Notes

It is an error to think that there was nothingness or some identity in the beginning. There is a phenomenon we know nothing about. There is only some primitive awareness of sensation and postulate followed by  perception. Out of that come identities. Identities are then aware of the harmonics of those sensations, postulates and perceptions.

All we can say that from Unknowable comes awareness, postulates, and the assimilation of those postulates into perception. This is the basic mechanism of this universe.

Fundamental awareness is made up of sensations. An identity is a composite of sensations. Where those sensations and identity come from, we do not know. When we are trying to understand ourselves, we are basically trying to understand the sensations that constitute us.
