Relativity – The Special and General Theory by Albert Einstein

Appendix V (added later to this book by Albert Einstein)

Einstein says in Appendix V: “Since the special theory of relativity revealed the physical equivalence of all inertial systems, it proved the untenability of the hypothesis of an aether at rest. It was therefore necessary to renounce the idea that the electromagnetic field is to be regarded as a state of a material carrier. The field thus becomes an irreducible element of physical description, irreducible in the same sense as the concept of matter in the theory of Newton.”

Einstein refers to field as “an irreducible element of physical description.” Field, therefore, is a substance, which is more basic than matter. The defining characteristic of field is frequency, where the defining characteristic of matter is mass.

.

Einstein says in Section V: “Even though classical mechanics does not supply us with a sufficiently broad basis for the theoretical presentation of all physical phenomena, still we must grant it a considerable measure of “truth,” since it supplies us with the actual motions of the heavenly bodies with a delicacy of detail little short of wonderful. The principle of relativity must therefore apply with great accuracy in the domain of mechanics. But that a principle of such broad generality should hold with such exactness in one domain of phenomena, and yet should be invalid for another, is a priori not very probable.”

Einstein is justifying his assumption that the principle of relativity, which is valid for uniform translation of mass, also applies to electrodynamic and optical phenomena that does not deal with mass. This is a big assumption that should be watched carefully.

.

Einstein says in Section VII, “There is hardly a simpler law in physics than that according to which light is propagated in empty space. Every child at school knows, or believes he knows, that this propagation takes place in straight lines with a velocity c = 300,000 km./sec. At all events we know with great exactness that this velocity is the same for all colours, because if this were not the case, the minimum of emission would not be observed simultaneously for different colours during the eclipse of a fixed star by its dark neighbour. By means of similar considerations based on observations of double stars, the Dutch astronomer De Sitter was also able to show that the velocity of propagation of light cannot depend on the velocity of motion of the body emitting the light. The assumption that this velocity of propagation is dependent on the direction ‘in space’ is in itself improbable.”

The observation by Dutch astronomer De Sitter gives us a clue that motion in field does not necessarily follow the laws of motion in the rigid coördinate system applied to matter. Therefore, we cannot use a coördinate system designed for matter as a coördinate system for motion in field. Field seems to have its own “coördinate system” that is different from the “coördinate system” for matter.

.

Einstein says in Section VII, “The velocity of propagation of a ray of light relative to the carriage thus comes out smaller than c. But this result comes into conflict with the principle of relativity set forth in Section V. For, like every other general law of nature, the law of the transmission of light in vacuo must, according to the principle of relativity, be the same for the railway carriage as reference-body as when the rails are the body of reference.”

Undoubtedly, the principle of relativity applies to the “coördinate system” for matter. We are used to looking at uniform translation with respect to matter. Relative velocities are additive from the viewpoint of matter whose position can be pinpointed by a center of mass.

But light is a disturbance traveling within a field that cannot be pinpointed by a center of mass. It is a frequency spread throughout the field. Comparing speed of a mass particle, to the speed of disturbance in a field, is like comparing apples to oranges. A correct comparison for speed of matter would be to the speed of the field itself.

According to Bohr’s principle of correspondence, the discrete frequency, as it increases, becomes, as a limit, the continuous mass of classical mechanics. The coördinate system for matter is too limited to include the phenomenon of light. For the principle of relativity, we need a coördinate system that would be applicable to both matter and field. Such a coördinate system shall be based on frequency and not mass.

We need to review Einstein’s Theory of Relativity in a coördinate system based on frequency and not on mass.

Einstein’s theory of relativity is looking at space and time through the filter of mass.

Is Reality fundamentally Discrete?

lights_620

The whole idea of Quantum Mechanics keeps going back to Bohr atomic model, and to Bohr’s correspondence principle.

According to Bohr’s correspondence principle fundamental reality is discrete, but it seems continuous when one looks at the limiting case through Classical mechanics.

Einstein believed that fundamental reality is actually continuous. That was his primary disagreement with quantum mechanics.

Einstein did not disagree with the formulas of Quantum mechanics as far as they successfully led to real inventions. But he saw those mathematical formulas more than just the result of trial and error. Einstein felt that a real interpretation for the working formulas of quantum mechanics was missing. If those formulas could be explained in realistic terms, then fundamental progress in science could be made.

Maybe Einstein was right. When we apply the logic of Bohr’s correspondence principle to electromagnetic waves, we notice something interesting. The frequency of electromagnetic waves is discrete, but as it increases it becomes continuous in its limit.

As the frequency spectrum enters the gamma range, the electromagnetic field seems to converge upon itself (see the reference above). This produces electrons and the electronic field. As the frequency continues to increase within the gamma range the center of the electronic field seems to condense into a nucleus made up of “continuous mass”.

The discrete frequency is the property of a wave that is inherently continuous. So, underlying the discrete reality of frequency there is the continuous reality of wave.

Frequency is related to energy, and it is visible as “stationary orbits” of Bohr’s atomic model. But underlying that frequency there is the reality of wave. The electromagnetic wave is “disturbed space”.

Quantum mechanics focuses on the discrete energy states and avoids looking at the underlying reality of continuous space. That is why it sees reality as discrete.

But it seems that a bit of deeper digging will discover continuous space as a more fundamental reality.

If that can be done it will make Einstein very happy.

What does “God is One” mean?

Reference: Viewpoint & Objectivity

The statement “God is one” is true only from an objective viewpoint.

Most people see God from a human-centric or self-centric viewpoint. They do not have an objective view of God. They think that their subjective idea of God is the only true God. But there are as many “subjective gods” as there are people.

This is a dangerous situation. People may agree broadly on one idea of God. But an idea is neither objective nor true just because lot of people agree to it.

People of a religion group around a subjective idea of God. “Jehovah”, “Christian God” and “Allah” are three subjective ideas of God.  People of these three religions have been fighting each other since ages to prove superiority of their God, which seems to constitute their way of living.

The truth is that all subjective views of God are incomplete. People who are trying to defend “one God” are defending an incomplete subjective idea of God.

Before one can truly talk about “One God” one needs to understand God in an objective sense. That means understanding God in a universal context, and not just in the context of one’s group, denomination, religion or culture.

The “personal god” is not the true God. It is a self-centric reflection of God. Even a human-centric notion of God is not totally objective.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam are flawed because their notion of God is culture-centric.

Any religion that does not see God in a universal context is limited and flawed to that degree.

I asked the following question on Quora,

Can a phenomenon such as light be discrete in terms of energy but not in terms of space?

In other words, is photon discrete because of the way it interacts, but we erroneously assume it to be a particle in space?

The answer I got is that this question is a no-brainer and it has long been settled. But then, what is this mystery about wave-function collapse?

After a bit of Q&A I arrived at the following conclusion.

“Now it has started to make some sense. A measuring apparatus cannot measure position in space directly, because it interacts with the photon in terms of energy first. It will interact with an “energy particle” and through that interaction it will try to determine position in space. Of course the “energy particle” will collapse the position of the wave function.

“But that doesn’t mean that the position is collapsed in reality. The “space particle” does not exist. There is only a continuous wave in space, only we cannot measure it. Thank you. Now I understand what collapse of wave function means. It is an illusion.”

The imprint on photographic film also is an outcome of energy interactions, therefore it is impossible to observe the electron in the double slit experiment as it actually behaves in space–as a wave.

The problem is that we are trying to observe a spatial phenomenon indirectly through an energy phenomenon.

Quantum Mechanics is looking at space through the filter of energy.

Addition (12/31/18)

There is no position is space until there is a material particle. An energy particle does not exist because energy cannot be localized in space like matter. A measuring apparatus cannot observe a photon or an electron because, spatially, it is a wave. Electron is a wave more quantized (susbtantial) than the light (photon) wave. Please see
