Certainty Processing

Summary

One may resolve an uncertainty by looking for possible certainties nearby. Usually, there are two certainties: ether there is a resolution to the dilemma, or there is none. When we focus on the center of a somatic with these two certainties, we move toward a resolution of the uncertainty. This may also resolve the somatic in some cases.

In a dynamic system, when a change occurs at a location, more changes occur around that location such that the constraint of oneness is satisfied. If surrounding changes are suppressed we get anomalies. This fact is explained in Scientology as “cause-effect.” A resolution comes from fully recognizing all the changes.

A terminal is any mass used in a fixed position in any communications system. Matching terminals is putting two terminals next to each other and comparing them. Comparing the mock up of a terminal to another mock up of itself, makes one look at that terminal more closely from different viewpoints. This helps one recognize what is truly there and thus helps handle the difficulty.

There are always a positive and a negative certainty. When the two are in conflict there is uncertainty. By looking at the opposite certainties of a condition you can assess that condition more accurately. Hubbard provides examples of how this principle may be applied in auditing.

Hubbard says, “The basic law underneath this is that a person becomes the effect of anything upon which he has had to depend.” More accurately, a person becomes aberrated when he is fixated. Fixation comes from dependence without understanding the underlying laws. The physical universe is a dependency to the degree you do not understand its natural laws. By understanding those laws you can make them cooperate with you. This is very evident from the scientific progress made so far. The whole point of certainty processing is to bring about that understanding of the natural laws of thought.

The opposite certainties have a gradient of certainties between them like the values on a scale whose ends represent zero and infinity. By looking at opposite certainties more closely one slowly moves toward recognizing what is actually there. In doing so one also recognizes the fixed sense of “self” or the fixed viewpoint one has.

People are hung up on their fixations because they see them as certainties. But there is always an opposite certainty. It helps to look at both opposites more closely to get the sense of one’s fixation and the actual reality that lies beyond it. 

Thus one can handle one’s hang up on communication. Actually, you can handle your hang up on any subject or item by processing “There is […item…],” “There is not […item…].” Certainty processing can also help recover viewpoints. Everybody has viewpoints, you have a viewpoint, relatives have viewpoints, sexual partners have viewpoints. “[…..] has a viewpoint,” “[…..] has no viewpoint.”

Facsimiles are sensations that represent a very condensed event. When that sensation is decomposed it comes forth as a complex narration in picture form. To handle facsimile more easily, one may run, “There are pictures,” “There are no pictures.” Hubbard provides many examples of how certainty processing may be run. Read them from the original materials.

Hubbard says, “The only reason a person is hanging on to a body or facsimile is because he has lost his belief in his ability to create.” Actually, it all boils down to the ability to postulate. He cannot postulate to undo a phenomenon, because in order to do that he must understand that phenomenon first.

At this point in the development of Scientology, Hubbard is looking at different ways of flushing out anomalies on a case. Once a person becomes aware of an anomaly, he can then resolve it. Certainty processing is one of those ways.

Summary

This procedure is safest when applied by oneself using the discipline of Subject Clearing. All gains come from the clearing of misconceptions and the reduction of fixations. One should address the whole beingness of a person instead of addressing just the body or the thetan.

When Hubbard talks about the “exteriorization of the thetan” he is basically talking about eliminating the fixation on the body. Hubbard treats this as a priority and the accomplishment of a major step. Once the fixation on the body is reduced, other fixations can be reduced more easily. As the fixations are reduced, the mental aberrations and the body malfunctions handle themselves.

To Hubbard, the goal is OPERATING THETAN, which can best be described as a beingness without fixations. From Subject Clearing point of view, one starts from Step VII and works towards Step I. He may go through this sequence again rapidly to discover more anomalies and resolve them. It is through the resolution of anomalies that misconceptions are cleared and fixations are reduced.

STEP VII—PSYCHOTIC CASES. A person who is dramatizing his fixation in an exaggerated manner, while not being aware of it, may be deemed psychotic. Such dramatizations, when extreme, may appear to be requiring desperate measures; but this case must be handled quite gently by putting him in touch with the physical environment. Hubbard recommends PRESENT TIME DIFFERENTIATION, using the sense of touch (see Handling Introversion).If inaccessible mimic him with own body whatever he does until he comes into communication. You are basically getting him in touch with the principle of oneness through the solid reality around him. You may apply other recommendations for this step from the original materials as necessary. This step may be applied to oneself with great benefit because one is usually not aware of what one is dramatizing.

STEP VI—A-R-C STRAIGHT WIRE. On this step a person uses the lists form SELF ANALYSIS IN SCIENTOLOGY. Details on this can be found here: ARC Straight wire Processes. Once a person is extroverted enough to be aware of his physical environment, this step will help him extrovert further. A person may try out other ARC processes from the above link.

STEP V—EXTERIORIZATION BY SCENERY. When a person finds it difficult to make mock ups, this step may help him. This uses PRESENT TIME DIFFERENTIATION, using the visual sense (see Handling Introversion).A person should continue this process until he feels alert. You may apply other recommendations for this step from the original materials as necessary.

STEP IV—EXPANDED GIVE & TAKE. This step requires that a person is able to get a mock-up, no matter how vague. But if a person can simply experience the items listed on this step, or get the concept of them, he would do fine. A person may subject clear these items by resolving any confusions stemming from them as he arranges them in some logical order. Or, he may just follow the instructions given in the materials. 

Here are these items ordered somewhat, as an example, by subject clearing. They can be ordered differently. The key aberrating factor that needs to be addressed is attachment or fixation on any of these items. Mock these items up and compare them to your actual experience. Just ask yourself, “Is my attention fixated on this item?” Contemplate on that item until you can see it for what it is.

STEP III—SPACATION. Spacation is a word coined by Hubbard, which means “constructing own space with eight anchor points and holding it stable without effort.” Do this step as recommended in the original materials. Here a person is practicing making a very simple postulate and holding on to it until he suddenly realizes the way his attention has been fixated on his body all this time.

STEP II—BODY. Do this step as recommended. On this step a person mocks up the body he is most familiar with until that mock up is very clear. It is important that the person follows The Discipline of Subject Clearing.At this point that clarity will turn into a new reality. This step will help him overcome any residual fixation on his body.

STEP I—THREE FEET BEHIND. Do this step as recommended. On this step a person is exercising his viewpoint that is no longer fixated on the body. He makes his awareness come to harmony with different physical locations, which he chooses. He does this until his awareness changes smoothly in harmony with changes in his viewpoint. He practices assuming both pleasant and unpleasant viewpoints at will, until his awareness can adjust to that viewpoint quickly and smoothly.

Comments

The thetan is essentially the awareness of the person. “Exteriorized and rehabilitated thetan” means that the person’s attention is stably free from any fixations on the body. His “own energy” is his active attention and the considerations in the present. “Old energy” are the existing fixed considerations in the area. The goal of the process is the sorting out of these considerations, This action rehabilitates the body as well. A person is learning to observe instead of trying to figure out the situation obsessively.

During this early development of Scientology, Hubbard became aware that fixation on the body was the major obstacle to the progress of the case. He, therefore, focused on clearing up this fixation. After that it was easy to handle general fixations of the person to make the case progress.

Hubbard did not realize that “a person’s idea of himself or herself” could also be a fundamental fixation, just like the fixation on the body. Instead, he formulated processes to further boost the sense of individuality of a person. This rendered Scientology aberrated in its cumulative affect.

Summary

Hubbard says. “The goal of this process is the rehabilitation of as much of the thetan’s capability as possible… and, to rid the preclear of psychosomatics, eradicate compulsions, obsessions and inhibitions, to raise his reaction time and intelligence level.” In short, the creative processing is intended to improve the human condition. Instead of addressing facsimiles, it addresses deep misconceptions with creation, change and destruction of mock-ups.

Hubbard says, “Gradient scales are vitally necessary in the application of creative processing.” The term “gradient scale” means a scale of condition graduated from zero to infinity. Neither zero not infinity are absolute. For example, each dimensions is a gradient scale. The precise value of a characteristic can be found at some point on the gradient scale of its dimension. No value is absolute. It is always relative to the surrounding values.

Hubbard says, “The word “gradient” is meant to define lessening or increasing degrees of condition.” The gradient is the “continuity” aspect of oneness. For example, the gradient scale of substance can be expressed through the tone scale of thought, followed by the electromagnetic spectrum, then followed by the periodic table of elements. In other words, the gradient of substance consists of the gradual condensation of substance as thought, energy and matter. With condensation, the space of substance shrinks, and the time of substance becomes increasingly enduring. This is also the gradient scale of a being.

Hubbard says, “In creative processing, the gradient scale, as it would refer to the creation of a person, could be, first, the envisionment of an area where the person might have been or might be; then the envisionment of an area the person commonly frequented; at last, the creation of a footprint the person had made, and then perhaps some article of apparel or a possession such as a handkerchief.” One may thus create or destroy the illusion of a person, or  of a disability, on a gradient. It is important to mock up each step of the gradient with confidence. If confusion arises at any step, discover the anomaly underlying it and resolve it.

Hubbard says, “The mind is actually quite free to alter postulates and change its own condition, if permitted to do so at a speed that it finds comfortable.” This should be understood as a corollary to the principle of oneness. Creative processing is an excellent approach to discover missing gradients in one’s understanding of the universe. What Hubbard describes as “agreements and experiences in the MEST and other universes” are actually a person’s misconceptions that needs to be straightened out.

Hubbard takes the viewpoint of “us and them” with respect to the being and the MEST universe. But, Subject Clearing takes the viewpoint that the being and the MEST universe are connected according to the principle of oneness. Where Hubbard sees a conflict due to hypnotic agreement, Subject Clearing sees misconceptions. Hubbard’s viewpoint is that of a hypnotist who makes illusions appear real to the mind. Subject clearing’s viewpoint is that of a mind that knows it has misconceptions and it is clearing them up. The “punishments of the MEST universe” are but the violations of the principle of oneness that point to misconceptions.

There are sensations. These sensations are real, and their interpretation leads to perceptions. These perceptions can be real or imaginary depending on the degree they conform to the principle of oneness. The violations of the principle of oneness are called anomalies, which perplex us. Such anomalies are based on deep misconceptions, which Hubbard views as “implanted agreements.” Such misconceptions produce a convincing imagery that the person fully believes in. He is not aware of the illusions built into that imagery.

Hubbard says, “Reality, then, is a delusion because it is one’s own illusion which has been disowned by one and is then received by one as being another thing.” But, more simply, a person’s reality is made up of how he is interpreting his sense perceptions. When a person realizes this, then, instead of blaming the MEST universe, he looks at his sense perceptions and their interpretations more closely for possible anomalies.

This is done on a gradient in creative processing. A person’s misconceptions exist along the line of fixations that may be in common with others around him. When he purposely mocks up things differently from how they are generally viewed, he finds his viewpoint to expand, and he can see fixations arising from agreements, and how they are affecting him. He then feels free and more independent to interpret his sense perceptions; but this appears very strange to him. As he understands this phenomenon, he gets used to it.

Hubbard says very dramatically, “A preclear who exteriorizes readily may find with a shock that he is not perceiving the MEST universe as he commonly supposes it should be perceived and quickly go back into his body to reassure himself…” Exteriorization does not mean that one leaves the body. It simply means that one is viewing without fixation on the body. This may be quite vivid and dramatic for a person who has not experienced this before.

The major advancement that Scientology has made over psychotherapy is not to tell the patient how he should think about his case. This allows the person to make up his own mind about things. Where a person cannot do so, Scientology simply makes the environment very safe for the person and encourages him to explore it on a gradient.

Hubbard says, “After a very large amount of auditing… He can further, without the aid of a body, move objects… ” This has not been demonstrated in Scientology even by Hubbard. So, if a Scientologist believes that, then he is probably doing this in his own universe. To me, the very idea of personal universe is brainwashing. There is only one universe that conforms to the principle of oneness.

Read the original materials for a description of how creative processing is done. The reader must question Hubbard’s assertion where they do not make sense. In creative processing, one may postulate whatever one wants, but only those postulates become real that conform to the principle of oneness.

Comments

The above are the basic principles that Hubbard introduced at a time of transition from Dianetics to Scientology. Hubbard replaces the processing of facsimiles (as in Dianetics) by creative processing.

This time of transition was in 1952 when Hubbard formally introduced the THETA-MEST theory and Creative Processing at the Philadelphia Doctorate Course. The textbook used for this course was SCIENTOLOGY 8-8008. This is where Hubbard introduced the spiritual dimension of THETA and the goal of thetan, which was the beginning of Scientology.

SCN 8-8008: Be, Have and Do

Summary

It appears that Having is a higher harmonic of Being after a change is brought about by Doing. In the universe, the beingness is represented by that, which is sensed. An example of this would be “thought.” A thought is being because it can be sensed. We may say that the thought condenses to appear as energy. With thought as beingness, condensation would be the doingness and energy would be the havingness. But then energy condenses further to appear as matter. In this cycle, the beingness is energy, the doingness is further condensation, and the havingness is matter.

The whole spectrum of substance from thought to energy to matter, can be represented by many cycles of BE-DO-HAVE. The extents of substance is represented by space that shrinks from thought-space to energy-space to matter space. The duration of substance is represented by time that becomes more enduring from thought-time to energy-time to matter-time. The explanation here is consistent with the theory of relativity of Einstein.

Hubbard says, “He [the physicist] has had to define time in terms of space and energy, space in terms of time and energy, and energy in terms of time and space, and matter as a combination of all three.” But, Einstein had already brought about a revolution in physics by defining substance-space-time as above. Energy and Matter were two categories of substance, to which we have now added Thought as the third category. Space and time now become evident as the characteristics of substance.

Hubbard defines self-determinism as, “the location of matter and energy in time and space, and the creation, change and destruction of time and space.” But energy and matter are located in the time and space of postulates, which are being created, changed and dissolved. The self itself is a construct of postulates. Therefore, self-determinism lies in the constraint imposed by the principle of oneness of postulates.

Hubbard says, “Space, time and energy in experience become Be, Have and Do, the component parts of experience itself.” But experience starts with sensing what is there—thought, energy, or matter. This is the BE component. The sensations are then assimilated together, which gives them meaning. This is the DO component. The outcome of assimilation is perception, which is the HAVE component. Therefore, BE-DO-HAVE, in experience, appears as “sensation-assimilation-perception.”

Hubbard says, “Space could be said to be BE. One can be in a space without change and without time; one can also be, without action.” This does not make sense because “to be in space,” is not the same thing as, “to be space.” The “self” which experiences, is the awareness that is sensing. This awareness is the thought-space that accompanies the postulate or thought. 

Hubbard says, “The essence of time is apparently possession. When possession ceases, the record of time ceases.” More accurately, the essence of time is duration and not possession. Of course, things under possession are enduring and, therefore, they exhibit time.  But things not under your possession are also enduring and exhibiting time. 

Hubbard lists words and phrases that provide the sense of past, present and future. These words and phrases are used to construct process commands. The past consists of changes that have come and gone. The present consists of changes that are occurring. The future consists of changes that are envisioned. The past is known by the sensations that continue forward as facsimiles because they did not get assimilated. Such facsimiles may continue even from one life cycle to the next, by riding on the genetic programming. When assimilated, the past sensations generate old perceptions and experience. A person may, therefore, think that he has lived before, but all we have are unassimilated impressions carried forward from the past.

Hubbard believes in the past lives of an individual, because to him an individuality is something fixed for eternity. He thinks that the individuality exists after the death of the body; but any such postulate may come from the unassimilated facsimiles that continue after death.

The space and time characteristics of substance appear as its relative motion. Hubbard sees that motion as DO. Hubbard says, “It requires beingness and havingness in order to achieve doingness.” The beingness can only be the substance, but Hubbard sees it as the “static of space.” The havingness would be envisioned outcome, but Hubbard sees it as the “kinetic of possession.” He sees thought, emotion or effort, as the various categories of doingness.

Hubbard observes, “The missing portions of the preclear’s past have to do with loss of something.” He is trying to figure out why a person is unable to recall all of his past. Essentially, he is questioning the presence of unassimilated facsimiles, because perception is fully recovered only when these facsimiles are assimilated.

Hubbard reasons, “Loss is always identified with HAVE, for if one doesn’t have, one cannot lose.” In truth, loss is identified with fixation on HAVE, and not with HAVE. Hubbard never understood the Eastern approach of Hinduism and Buddhism. He misinterpreted nirvana and criticized it.

Hubbard says, “Having and Being are often identified to the degree that many people attempt exclusively to Be only by Having.” Being and Having are harmonics of each other. They become aberrated only when there is fixation. As long as there are no fixations, be-have-do maintain a balance.

Comments


Hubbard relates BE-HAVE-DO to space-time-energy. But such analogy needs to be updated in the light of the modern definitions according to the theory of relativity of Einstein. The human characteristics of BE-HAVE-DO maintain a natural balance according to the principle of oneness, as long as there are no fixations. The improvement in any human condition is brought about by recognizing and reducing fixations.

Summary

Both creation and destruction arise from change only; the change comes from postulates; and the postulates are there to maintain the oneness of reality. The “self” in self-determinism is itself a construct of postulates. So, the goal of theta and self-determinism may be seen as “the oneness of postulates.”

Hubbard says, “Theta has the capability of locating matter and energy in time and space and of creating time and space.” Theta was originally postulated by Hubbard as the unknowable in the equation of life. It remains unknowable no matter what postulates are assigned to it. Therefore, we shall call theta, the Unknowable.

Matter and energy are merely different categories of substance as shown by Einstein. The basic category of substance that has been overlooked is thought. Substance is anything substantial enough to be sensed. Thought, energy and matter are part of the spectrum of substance. This is yet to be recognized by science, and philosophy. 

Time and space are erroneously viewed as independent of substance. Actually, space denotes the extent of substance. The empty space may be empty of matter, but it denotes the extent of energy and thought. This means that matter movers through energy and thought. On the other hand, time denotes the duration of substance. This has implications in terms of motion. Thought appears to move much faster than energy, and energy appears to move much faster than matter.

We may then summarize Hubbard’s statement above to mean that reality consists of postulates from Unknowable source. The postulates provide the appearance of substance (thought, energy and matter) that have relative extents and durations. Anything that we may add to it will be just another postulate. Any change will appear as the motion of substance in terms of its relative space and time. We see that as action.

Using Hubbard’s formulation we may say that we have an interacting triangle of substance-space-time. On the spectrum, the substance condenses from thought to energy to matter. As it does so, the space shrinks and time becomes more enduring. The changes lead to the cycle of creation, growth, conservation, decay and destruction. This cycle may be abbreviated as start-change-stop. Destruction is followed by creation. Stop is followed by start.

Hubbard evaluates good and bad in terms of construction and destruction but a better evaluation appears to be in terms of the elimination of anomalies and movement towards oneness of postulates. In oneness there is a balance of all activities such that they make sense. When there is a fixation, such as, not be able to create or destroy something, a balance is difficult to achieve and insanity results. We may, therefore, assess a person by looking for fixations in his activities on the first four dynamics.

Hubbard believes that every man is his own universe and possesses within himself all the capabilities of a universe. Of course, a person has the ability to postulate anything as long as he abides by the constraint of oneness. The universe enforces that constraint, so a person cannot just postulate arbitrarily.

Hubbard proposes a process that assesses creation and destruction on dynamics to discover hidden compulsions and obsessions on the part of a person. Instead of the principle of oneness, he proposes a sense of ethics, which generally exists only as an arbitrary code of conduct not necessarily related to reason.

Comments

Hubbard inability to achieve complete success with his processes boils down to him not understanding the scientific criterion of oneness (continuity, consistency, harmony).
