Chapter 16

श्रीभगवानुवाच
अभयंसत्त्वसंशुद्धिःज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः।
दानंदमश्चयज्ञश्चस्वाध्यायस्तपआर्जवम्।।16.1।।

16.1 Lord Shri Krishna continued: Fearlessness, clean living, unceasing concentration on wisdom, readiness to give, self-control, a spirit of sacrifice, regular study of the scriptures, austerities, candour,

अहिंसासत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागःशान्तिरपैशुनम्।
दयाभूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वंमार्दवंह्रीरचापलम्।।16.2।।

16.2 harmlessness, truth, absence of wrath, renunciation, contentment, straightforwardness, compassion towards all, uncovetousness, courtesy, modesty, constancy,

तेजःक्षमाधृतिःशौचमद्रोहोनातिमानिता।
भवन्तिसम्पदंदैवीमभिजातस्यभारत।।16.3।।

16.3 Valour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, freedom from hate and vanity; these are his who possesses the Godly Qualities, O Arjuna!

These are the qualities that result from enlightenment; but, which we find sorely lacking in today’s human culture. We cannot force ourself to have these qualities. They arise automatically as one becomes increasingly enlightened.

दम्भोदर्पोऽभिमानश्चक्रोधःपारुष्यमेवच।
अज्ञानंचाभिजातस्यपार्थसम्पदमासुरीम्।।16.4।।

16.4 Hypocrisy, pride, insolence, cruelty, ignorance belong to him who is born of the godless qualities.

दैवीसम्पद्विमोक्षायनिबन्धायासुरीमता।
माशुचःसम्पदंदैवीमभिजातोऽसिपाण्डव।।16.5।।

16.5 Godly qualities lead to liberation; godless to bondage. Do not be anxious, Prince! Thou hast the Godly qualities.

द्वौभूतसर्गौलोकेऽस्मिन्दैवआसुरएवच।
दैवोविस्तरशःप्रोक्तआसुरंपार्थमेश्रृणु।।16.6।।

16.6 All beings are of two classes: Godly and godless. The Godly I have described; I will now describe the other.

Life can take the direction of liberation, or it can go in the direction of increasing bondage. These two directions are opposite to each other. If no effort for liberation is made, life naturally sinks into bondage. The characteristics of bondage are described here.

प्रवृत्तिंचनिवृत्तिंचजनानविदुरासुराः।
नशौचंनापिचाचारोनसत्यंतेषुविद्यते।।16.7।।

16.7 The godless do not know how to act or how to renounce. They have neither purity nor truth. They do not understand the right principles of conduct.

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठंतेजगदाहुरनीश्वरम्।
अपरस्परसम्भूतंकिमन्यत्कामहैतुकम्।।16.8।।

16.8 They say the universe is an accident with no purpose and no God. Life is created by sexual union, a product of lust and nothing else.

एतांदृष्टिमवष्टभ्यनष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः।
प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्माणःक्षयायजगतोऽहिताः।।16.9।।

16.9 Thinking thus, these degraded souls, these enemies of mankind – whose intelligence is negligible and whose deeds are monstrous – come into the world only to destroy.

These are powerful words describing those who are living in bondage. They lack discrimination, and are very short-sighted. The result of their action is destruction because they lack intelligence and understanding. Looks like people were the same in the times of Bhagavad Gita.

काममाश्रित्यदुष्पूरंदम्भमानमदान्विताः।
मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान्प्रवर्तन्तेऽशुचिव्रताः।।16.10।।

16.10 Giving themselves up to insatiable passions, hypocritical, self-sufficient and arrogant, cherishing false conception founded on delusion, they work only to carry out their own unholy purposes.

चिन्तामपरिमेयांचप्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः।
कामोपभोगपरमाएतावदितिनिश्िचताः।।16.11।।

16.11 Poring anxiously over evil resolutions, which only end in death; seeking only the gratification of desire as the highest goal; seeing nothing beyond;

आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाःकामक्रोधपरायणाः।
ईहन्तेकामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसञ्चयान्।।16.12।।

16.12 Caught in the toils of a hundred vain hopes, the slaves of passion and wrath, they accumulate hoards of unjust wealth, only to pander to their sensual desire.

These verses further describe those living in bondage. Their main characteristic is that they are focused on themselves and on their narrow preferences. They cannot see from the viewpoint of others. They do not have empathy. In other words, their mental matrix is not assimilated with the universal matrix.

इदमद्यमयालब्धमिमंप्राप्स्येमनोरथम्।
इदमस्तीदमपिमेभविष्यतिपुनर्धनम्।।16.13।।

16.13 This I have gained today; tomorrow I will gratify another desire; this wealth is mine now, the rest shall be mine ere long;

असौमयाहतःशत्रुर्हनिष्येचापरानपि।
ईश्वरोऽहमहंभोगीसिद्धोऽहंबलवान्सुखी।।16.14।।

16.14 I have slain one enemy, I will slay the others also; I am worthy to enjoy, I am the Almighty, I am perfect, powerful and happy;

आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मिकोऽन्योऽस्तिसदृशोमया।
यक्ष्येदास्यामिमोदिष्यइत्यज्ञानविमोहिताः।।16.15।।

16.15 I am rich, I am well-bred; who is there to compare with me? I will sacrifice, I will give, I will pay – and I will enjoy. Thus blinded by Ignorance,

अनेकचित्तविभ्रान्तामोहजालसमावृताः।
प्रसक्ताःकामभोगेषुपतन्तिनरकेऽशुचौ।।16.16।।

16.16 Perplexed by discordant thoughts, entangled in the snares of desire, infatuated by passion, they sink into the horrors of hell.

Again, these verses provide an insightful description of those in bondage. Such people think themselves to be powerful, but they are in bondage of their ego. In other words, their attention is fixated on themselves. They do not care for others over themselves. They are actually quite lonely and miserable.

आत्मसम्भाविताःस्तब्धाधनमानमदान्विताः।
यजन्तेनामयज्ञैस्तेदम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्।।16.17।।

16.17 Self-conceited, stubborn, rich, proud and insolent, they make a display of their patronage, disregarding the rules of decency.

अहङ्कारंबलंदर्पंकामंक्रोधंचसंश्रिताः।
मामात्मपरदेहेषुप्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः।।16.18।।

16.18 Puffed up by power and inordinate conceit, swayed by lust and wrath, these wicked people hate Me Who am within them, as I am within all.

तानहंद्विषतःक्रूरान्संसारेषुनराधमान्।
क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्वेवयोनिषु।।16.19।।

16.19 Those who thus hate Me, who are cruel, the dregs of mankind, I condemn them to a continuous, miserable and godless rebirth.

असुरींयोनिमापन्नामूढाजन्मनिजन्मनि।
मामप्राप्यैवकौन्तेयततोयान्त्यधमांगतिम्।।16.20।।

16.20 So reborn, they spend life after life, enveloped in delusion. And they never reach Me, O Prince, but degenerate into still lower forms of life.

People who are in bondage behave badly and hate their better self. They are condemned to a miserable existence life after life.

त्रिविधंनरकस्येदंद्वारंनाशनमात्मनः।
कामःक्रोधस्तथालोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयंत्यजेत्।।16.21।।

16.21 The gates of hell are three: lust, wrath and avarice. They destroy the Self. Avoid them.

एतैर्विमुक्तःकौन्तेयतमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः।
आचरत्यात्मनःश्रेयस्ततोयातिपरांगतिम्।।16.22।।

16.22 These are the gates which lead to darkness; if a man avoid them he will ensure his own welfare, and in the end will attain his liberation.

यःशास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्यवर्ततेकामकारतः।
नससिद्धिमवाप्नोतिनसुखंनपरांगतिम्।।16.23।।

16.23 But he who neglects the commands of the scriptures, and follows the promptings of passion, he does not attain perfection, happiness or the final goal.

तस्माच्छास्त्रंप्रमाणंतेकार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ।
ज्ञात्वाशास्त्रविधानोक्तंकर्मकर्तुमिहार्हसि।।16.24।।

16.24 Therefore whenever there is doubt whether thou shouldst do a thing or not, let the scriptures guide thy conduct. In the light of the scriptures shouldst thou labour the whole of thy life.

Lust, wrath and avarice are impulses that bring disorder to life and destroy it. Control these impulses and you will attain liberation. Scriptures guide you how to control such passions. Follow them.

Final Comment

Omnipresence & Non-Attachment

In my opinion “spacetime” is not something. It is an abstract concept that points to the characteristic of energy. Energy has extents (space), and duration (time). Space and time are related to each other through energy, and therefore, may be described together. Spacetime changes as energy condenses. Spacetime is a characteristic of energy that doesn’t exist in the absence of energy.

So, essentially, you may say that energy is omnipresent as it expresses itself as space, time, light and matter. I differ here from both Hubbard and Einstein. I see energy as the basic substance of the universe. It is motivated by an inherent impulse.

Thus, any fundamental concept that is universal is OMNIPRESENT.

That which is omnipresent has the whole cycle of motion inside it, while It is not attached to that cycle.

Thus, the basic characteristic of omnipresence is the UNATTACHED viewpoint.

The Unattached Viewpoint

The “I” of The Bhagavad Gita is the Unattached viewpoint from which any and all motion can be viewed without distortion. This Unattached viewpoint is beyond any knowledge. It is only from this viewpoint that the cyclic nature of the universe can be fully comprehended. The Unattached viewpoint remains unaffected by any cycle.

An UNATTACHED viewpoint is a viewpoint that itself does not have any relative motion but has the potential to view all possible motion without any distortion.

Aristotle had a similar concept of the “unmoved mover” but the Unattached viewpoint is not moving anything. It is simply aware of all possible motion, which constitutes the universe. You can do so only from the reference point of absolute non-attachment (see Emptiness).

There is a scale of motion from STATIC (no motion) to KINETIC (different degrees of motion). Usually these two words describe two points relative to each other on the scale of motion.

A pendulum stops at either end of the swing for a fraction of a second. That condition is considered STATIC. The pendulum is then moving during the rest of the swing reaching maximum velocity half way through the swing. This condition is considered KINETIC. The total energy of the system is constant per the Law of Conservation of Energy. That energy is considered completely potential when the pendulum is STATIC, and completely kinetic at the middle of the swing when the velocity is at maximum. At other points during the swing, the energy is converting either from potential to kinetic or from kinetic to potential.

The STATIC state is not only completely devoid of relative motion but it also represents the totality of energy in potential form. We may consider this to be the state of the universe just before the “Big Bang.” From that point on the universe is increasingly becoming kinetic. This may be looked upon as the expanding universe. But, like the pendulum, the universe may reach a maximum state of expansion and then start to contract from that point. 

This is the cyclic universe of the Vedas. It goes from static to kinetic and back to static like a pendulum (see Universe: Static to Kinetic). But the Unattached viewpoint stands apart from the “static to kinetic” cycle of the universe, completely detached. Any attachment to the universe may make the viewpoint subject to the “static to kinetic” cycle to that degree.

The Unattached viewpoint is in a position to view the whole cycle of the universe from static to kinetic and then back to static. It is the most powerful viewpoint.

Chapter 15

श्रीभगवानुवाच
ऊर्ध्वमूलमधःशाखमश्वत्थंप्राहुरव्ययम्।
छन्दांसियस्यपर्णानियस्तंवेदसवेदवित्।।15.1।।

15.1 Lord Shri Krishna continued: This phenomenal creation, which is both ephemeral and eternal, is like a tree, but having its seed above in the Highest and its ramifications on this earth below. The scriptures are its leaves, and he who understands this, knows.

This verse reminds me of this universe starting from the lightest and flimsiest of radiation and gradually condensing into the universe of stars, suns and planets. The “seed” is something completely imperceptible from which has precipitated such an enormous universe. The scriptures (and now science) describe it to us, so we may understand it.

It is not just the energy that has condensed in infinitely different perceptible forms; it is the underlying simple impulse of that energy also that has condensed into infinitely complex animation and thought. The essence underlying this evolution of energy and its impulse is worth knowing.

अधश्चोर्ध्वंप्रसृतास्तस्यशाखागुणप्रवृद्धाविषयप्रवालाः।
अधश्चमूलान्यनुसन्ततानिकर्मानुबन्धीनिमनुष्यलोके।।15.2।।

15.2 Its branches shoot upwards and downwards, deriving their nourishment from the Qualities; its buds are the objects of sense; and its roots, which follow the Law causing man’s regeneration and degeneration, pierce downwards into the soil.

The universe surrounds us. It is rooted in the actions of man that bind him through the objects that he senses, motivated by the Qualities of purity, passion and ignorance.

Man is a complex energy form motivated by complex impulses woven in that form. It is a complete system in itself. This verse is looking at the man’s universe.

नरूपमस्येहतथोपलभ्यतेनान्तोनचादिर्नचसंप्रतिष्ठा।
अश्वत्थमेनंसुविरूढमूलमसङ्गशस्त्रेणदृढेनछित्त्वा।।15.3।।

15.3 In this world its true form is not known, neither its origin nor its end, and its strength is not understood, until the tree with its roots striking deep into the earth is hewn down by the sharp axe of non-attachment.

ततःपदंतत्परिमार्गितव्ययस्मिन्गताननिवर्तन्तिभूयः।
तमेवचाद्यंपुरुषंप्रपद्येयतःप्रवृत्तिःप्रसृतापुराणी।।15.4।।

15.4 Beyond lies the Path, from which, when found, there is no return. This is the Primal God from whence this ancient creation has sprung.

Without the Static viewpoint this world cannot be viewed for what it truly is. One needs to be free of all attachment to view the true form of this world, its origin and its end. Attachment is there because of ignorance. Beyond this ignorance and attachment lies the view and awareness, which when attained cannot be reversed.

निर्मानमोहाजितसङ्गदोषाअध्यात्मनित्याविनिवृत्तकामाः।
द्वन्द्वैर्विमुक्ताःसुखदुःखसंज्ञैर्गच्छन्त्यमूढाःपदमव्ययंतत्।।15.5।।

15.5 The wise attain Eternity when, freed from pride and delusion, they have conquered their love for the things of sense; when, renouncing desire and fixing their gaze on the Self, they have ceased to be tossed to and fro by the opposing sensations, like pleasure and pain.

नतद्भासयतेसूर्योनशशाङ्कोनपावकः।
यद्गत्वाननिवर्तन्तेतद्धामपरमंमम।।15.6।।

15.6 Neither sun, moon, nor fire shines there. Those who go thither never come back. For, O Arjuna, that is my Celestial Home!

How does one free oneself from ignorance and attachment, from pride and delusion? How does one conquer one’s love of the things of sense? How does one renounce desire without suppressing it? It all happens automatically when the static viewpoint is attained.

The focus should be on attaining the static viewpoint. Yoga helps. Subject clearing helps. Both are very basic and natural activities.

ममैवांशोजीवलोकेजीवभूतःसनातनः।
मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणिप्रकृतिस्थानिकर्षति।।15.7।।

15.7 It is only a very small part of My Eternal Self, which is the life of the universe, drawing round itself the six senses, the mind the last, which have their source in Nature.

शरीरंयदवाप्नोतियच्चाप्युत्क्रामतीश्वरः।
गृहीत्वैतानिसंयातिवायुर्गन्धानिवाशयात्।।15.8।।

15.8 When the Supreme Lord enters a body or leaves it, He gathers these senses together and travels on with them, as the wind gathers perfume while passing through the flowers.

श्रोत्रंचक्षुःस्पर्शनंचरसनंघ्राणमेवच।
अधिष्ठायमनश्चायंविषयानुपसेवते।।15.9।।

15.9 He is the perception of the ear, the eye, the touch, the taste and the smell, yea and of the mind also; and the enjoyment the things which they perceive is also His.

There is a lot more to Nature than just the life of the universe. The life is limited to the six senses. There are the five physical senses, and the sixth sense is the mind. These six senses enter the body upon birth and leave the body upon death. These senses continue to exist between lives. This all can be observed from the Static viewpoint.

Today, we know through science that the body, upon death, disintegrates into atoms, molecules, and congregation of molecules that carry bits and pieces of programming captured from the senses. These elements come together into a new configuration of a body-mind system upon the birth of a new body.

उत्क्रामन्तंस्थितंवापिभुञ्जानंवागुणान्वितम्।
विमूढानानुपश्यन्तिपश्यन्तिज्ञानचक्षुषः।।15.10।।

15.10 The ignorant do not see that it is He Who is present in life and Who departs at death or even that it is He Who enjoys pleasure through the Qualities. Only the eye of wisdom sees.

यतन्तोयोगिनश्चैनंपश्यन्त्यात्मन्यवस्थितम्।
यतन्तोऽप्यकृतात्मानोनैनंपश्यन्त्यचेतसः।।15.11।।

15.11 The saints with great effort find Him within themselves; but not the unintelligent, who in spite of every effort cannot control their minds.

यदादित्यगतंतेजोजगद्भासयतेऽखिलम्।
यच्चन्द्रमसियच्चाग्नौतत्तेजोविद्धिमामकम्।।15.12।।

15.12 Remember that the Light which, proceeding from the sun, illumines the whole world, and the Light which is in the moon, and That which is in the fire also, all are born of Me.

It is the “Viewpoint” that is present in life and which departs at death. This “Viewpoint”, when attached to the world, is the effect of the three Qualities. But, when it is detached, it becomes static. All wisdom comes from this Viewpoint.

गामाविश्यचभूतानिधारयाम्यहमोजसा।
पुष्णामिचौषधीःसर्वाःसोमोभूत्वारसात्मकः।।15.13।।

15.13 I enter this world and animate all My creatures with My vitality; and by My cool moonbeams I nourish the plants.

अहंवैश्वानरोभूत्वाप्राणिनांदेहमाश्रितः।
प्राणापानसमायुक्तःपचाम्यन्नंचतुर्विधम्।।15.14।।

15.14 Becoming the fire of life, I pass into their bodies and, uniting with the vital streams of Prana and Apana, I digest the various kinds of food.

सर्वस्यचाहंहृदिसन्निविष्टोमत्तःस्मृतिर्ज्ञानमपोहनंच।
वेदैश्चसर्वैरहमेववेद्योवेदान्तकृद्वेदविदेवचाहम्।।15.15।।

15.15 I am enthroned in the hearts of all; memory, wisdom and discrimination owe their origins to Me. I am He Who is to be realised in the scriptures; I inspire their wisdom and I know their truth.

All animation of energy forms comes from the inherent impulse of energy. There is exchange of energy among various energy forms. This impulse travels through the energy forms, unites with other impulses, and there come about types of impulses. These impulses take the form of memory and wisdom. They are the very basis of discrimination.

So, a unique energy form shall have a unique system of impulses. The two will go hand in hand. As the energy form changes so would its system of impulse would change, and vice versa. A structure of energy forms (and their impulses) may exist from basic to increasingly elaborate.

द्वाविमौपुरुषौलोकेक्षरश्चाक्षरएवच।
क्षरःसर्वाणिभूतानिकूटस्थोऽक्षरउच्यते।।15.16।।

15.16 There are two aspects in Nature: the perishable and the imperishable. All life in this world belongs to the former, the unchanging element belongs to the latter.

उत्तमःपुरुषस्त्वन्यःपरमात्मेत्युदाहृतः।
योलोकत्रयमाविश्यबिभर्त्यव्ययईश्वरः।।15.17।।

15.17 But higher than all am I, the Supreme God, the Absolute Self, the Eternal Lord, Who pervades the worlds and upholds them all.

यस्मात्क्षरमतीतोऽहमक्षरादपिचोत्तमः।
अतोऽस्मिलोकेवेदेचप्रथितःपुरुषोत्तमः।।15.18।।

15.18 Beyond comparison of the Eternal with the non-eternal am I, Who am called by scriptures and sages the Supreme Personality, the Highest God.

Perishable means that the energy form rearranges itself. It doesn’t stay the same. All life in this world is like that. The unchanging element is the underlying energy that is rearranging itself. Beyond the energy forms and the energy is the Static viewpoint that pervades the world and upholds everything. This Static viewpoint is beyond the comparison of the eternal with non-eternal.

योमामेवमसम्मूढोजानातिपुरुषोत्तमम्।
ससर्वविद्भजतिमांसर्वभावेनभारत।।15.19।।

15.19 He who with unclouded vision sees Me as the Lord-God, knows all there is to be known, and always shall worship Me with his whole heart.

इतिगुह्यतमंशास्त्रमिदमुक्तंमयाऽनघ।
एतद्बुद्ध्वाबुद्धिमान्स्यात्कृतकृत्यश्चभारत।।15.20।।

15.20 Thus, O Sinless One, I have revealed to thee this most mystic knowledge. He who understands gains wisdom and attains the consummation of life.

The problem is to attain that unclouded vision. Hopefully, Subject Clearing may help one reach it.

Final Comment

A person’s world is rooted in his actions that bind him through the objects that he senses, motivated by the Qualities of purity, passion and ignorance. He is a complex energy form motivated by complex impulses woven in that form. One needs to be free of all attachment to view the true form of this world, its origin and its end. Attachment is there because of ignorance. How does one free oneself from ignorance and attachment? How does one renounce desire without suppressing it? Yoga helps. Subject clearing helps. Both are very basic and natural activities.

A person’s world is limited to the six senses—the five physical senses and the mental sense. These six senses enter the body upon birth and leave  upon death. They continue through the body-mind systems that are born again and again. Underlying these senses is the viewpoint, which, when attached to the world, is the effect of the three Qualities; but, when detached, becomes static. All wisdom comes from this viewpoint.

Every person has a viewpoint, an energy form, and inherent impulses. There is exchange of energy and impulses among viewpoints. Thus come about memory, wisdom and discrimination. All viewpoints evolve toward the Static viewpoint. The Static viewpoint pervades the world and upholds everything. It is beyond eternal and non-eternal.

Chapter 14

श्रीभगवानुवाच
परंभूयःप्रवक्ष्यामिज्ञानानांज्ञानमुत्तमम्।
यज्ज्ञात्वामुनयःसर्वेपरांसिद्धिमितोगताः।।14.1।।

14.1 Lord Shri Krishna continued: Now I will reveal unto the Wisdom which is beyond knowledge, by attaining which the sages have reached Perfection.

इदंज्ञानमुपाश्रित्यममसाधर्म्यमागताः।
सर्गेऽपिनोपजायन्तेप्रलयेनव्यथन्तिच।।14.2।।

14.2 Dwelling in Wisdom and realising My Divinity, they are not born again when the universe is re-created at the beginning of every cycle, nor are they affected when it is dissolved.

ममयोनिर्महद्ब्रह्मतस्मिन्गर्भंदधाम्यहम्।
संभवःसर्वभूतानांततोभवतिभारत।।14.3।।

14.3 The eternal Cosmos is My womb, in which I plant the seed, from which all beings are born, O Prince!

The Static viewpoint is beyond any knowledge. From it the awareness arises that the universe creates and dissolves itself in cycles. There is not just one Big bang. This happens over and over again over long periods of time. The Static viewpoint remains unaffected. It simply observes all motion.

सर्वयोनिषुकौन्तेयमूर्तयःसम्भवन्तियाः।
तासांब्रह्ममहद्योनिरहंबीजप्रदःपिता।।14.4।।

14.4 O illustrious son of Kunti! Through whatever wombs men are born, it is the Spirit Itself that conceives, and I am their Father.

सत्त्वंरजस्तमइतिगुणाःप्रकृतिसंभवाः।
निबध्नन्तिमहाबाहोदेहेदेहिनमव्ययम्।।14.5।।

14.5 Purity, Passion and Ignorance are the Qualities which the Law of nature bringeth forth. They fetter the free Spirit in all beings.

तत्रसत्त्वंनिर्मलत्वात्प्रकाशकमनामयम्।
सुखसङ्गेनबध्नातिज्ञानसङ्गेनचानघ।।14.6।।

14.6 O Sinless One! Of these, Purity, being luminous, strong and invulnerable, binds one by its yearning for happiness and illumination.

From the Static viewpoint, it is clearly seen that man is a form that is being animated by energy. He is constrained by the qualities of purity, passion and ignorance. Purity constrains him through his yearning for happiness and illumination.

रजोरागात्मकंविद्धितृष्णासङ्गसमुद्भवम्।
तन्निबध्नातिकौन्तेयकर्मसङ्गेनदेहिनम्।।14.7।।

14.7 Passion, engendered by thirst for pleasure and attachment, binds the soul through its fondness for activity.

तमस्त्वज्ञानजंविद्धिमोहनंसर्वदेहिनाम्।
प्रमादालस्यनिद्राभिस्तन्निबध्नातिभारत।।14.8।।

14.8 But Ignorance, the product of darkness, stupefies the senses in all embodied beings, binding them by chains of folly, indolence and lethargy.

सत्त्वंसुखेसञ्जयतिरजःकर्मणिभारत।
ज्ञानमावृत्यतुतमःप्रमादेसञ्जयत्युत।।14.9।।

14.9 Purity brings happiness, Passion commotion, and Ignorance, which obscures wisdom, leads to a life of failure.

Passion constrains man through his fondness for activity (pleasure and attachment). Ignorance constrains the man through folly, indolence and lethargy (stupefied senses). Purity brings happiness, Passion commotion, and Ignorance, which obscures wisdom, leads to a life of failure.

It is interesting to note that happiness is not the ultimate goal. One needs to rise above happiness also. But before man can do that he must first overcome stupefaction of senses, and the commotion of activity. Only then he can overcome the attachment to happiness.

रजस्तमश्चाभिभूयसत्त्वंभवतिभारत।
रजःसत्त्वंतमश्चैवतमःसत्त्वंरजस्तथा।।14.10।।

14.10 O Prince! Purity prevails when Passion and Ignorance are overcome; Passion, when Purity and Ignorance are overcome; and Ignorance when it overcomes Purity and Passion.

We have purity, when purity overcomes passion and ignorance. We have passion, when passion overcomes purity and ignorance. We have ignorance, when ignorance overcomes purity and passion.

The viewpoint of ignorance overcoming purity and passion is very interesting. You get what you focus your attention on, but how do you focus your attention on ignorance? That happens when you put your critical thinking aside, especially, in today’s environment of “excessive information from internet.”

सर्वद्वारेषुदेहेऽस्मिन्प्रकाशउपजायते।
ज्ञानंयदातदाविद्याद्विवृद्धंसत्त्वमित्युत।।14.11।।

14.11 When the light of knowledge gleams forth from all the gates of the body, then be sure that Purity prevails.

लोभःप्रवृत्तिरारम्भःकर्मणामशमःस्पृहा।
रजस्येतानिजायन्तेविवृद्धेभरतर्षभ।।14.12।।

14.12 O best of Indians! Avarice, the impulse to act and the beginning of action itself are all due to the dominance of Passion.

अप्रकाशोऽप्रवृत्तिश्चप्रमादोमोहएवच।
तमस्येतानिजायन्तेविवृद्धेकुरुनन्दन।।14.13।।

14.13 Darkness, stagnation, folly and infatuation are the result of the dominance of Ignorance, O joy of the Kuru-clan!

Purity must prevail where knowledge is concerned. Where passion dominates, greed comes to fore. Where ignorance dominates you have infatuation, folly, stagnation and darkness.

यदासत्त्वेप्रवृद्धेतुप्रलयंयातिदेहभृत्।
तदोत्तमविदांलोकानमलान्प्रतिपद्यते।।14.14।।

14.14 When Purity prevails, the soul on quitting the body passes on to the pure regions where live those who know the Highest.

रजसिप्रलयंगत्वाकर्मसङ्गिषुजायते।
तथाप्रलीनस्तमसिमूढयोनिषुजायते।।14.15।।

14.15 When Passion prevails, the soul is reborn among those who love activity; when Ignorance rules, it enters the wombs of the ignorant.

Here confusion arises as it is not clear if we are looking at the soul or atman. The soul is the individuality of the person that terminates with the death of the body. However, atman is the energy associated with the person that continues beyond death.

When purity prevails, the energy is harmonious, and there is not much residue that would continue as part of another life. When passion prevails, the energy residue is loaded with passion; and when ignorance rules, the energy residue is loaded with ignorance. Such load continues as part of another life.

कर्मणःसुकृतस्याहुःसात्त्विकंनिर्मलंफलम्।
रजसस्तुफलंदुःखमज्ञानंतमसःफलम्।।14.16।।

14.16 They say the fruit of a meritorious action is spotless and full of purity; the outcome of Passion is misery, and of Ignorance darkness.

सत्त्वात्सञ्जायतेज्ञानंरजसोलोभएवच।
प्रमादमोहौतमसोभवतोऽज्ञानमेवच।।14.17।।

14.17 Purity engenders Wisdom, Passion avarice, and Ignorance folly, infatuation and darkness.

ऊर्ध्वंगच्छन्तिसत्त्वस्थामध्येतिष्ठन्तिराजसाः।
जघन्यगुणवृत्तिस्थाअधोगच्छन्तितामसाः।।14.18।।

14.18 When Purity is in the ascendant, the man evolves; when Passion, he neither evolves nor degenerates; when Ignorance, he is lost.

In purity, all elements are in harmony with each other, A meritorious action is like that. It is its own fruit in the form of wisdom. It leads to evolution of man.

In passion, there is conflict and upheaval and the outcome is misery. One is running after things with desire. It neither leads to evolution nor degeneration.

In ignorance, there is simply darkness. One is heavily attached to things and simply lost. There is degeneration.

नान्यंगुणेभ्यःकर्तारंयदाद्रष्टानुपश्यति।
गुणेभ्यश्चपरंवेत्तिमद्भावंसोऽधिगच्छति।।14.19।।

14.19 As soon as man understands that it is only the Qualities which act and nothing else, and perceives That which is beyond, he attains My divine nature.

गुणानेतानतीत्यत्रीन्देहीदेहसमुद्भवान्।
जन्ममृत्युजरादुःखैर्विमुक्तोऽमृतमश्नुते।।14.20।।

14.20 When the soul transcends the Qualities, which are the real cause of physical existence, then, freed from birth and death, from old age and misery, he quaffs the nectar of immortality.

अर्जुनउवाच
कैर्लिंगैस्त्रीन्गुणानेतानतीतोभवतिप्रभो।
किमाचारःकथंचैतांस्त्रीन्गुणानतिवर्तते।।14.21।।

14.21 Arjuna asked: My Lord! By what signs can he who has transcended the Qualities be recognized? How does he act? How does he live beyond them?

The whole universe is constructed out of the condensation of energy and its impulse. All Qualities arise from the condensation of the impulse inherent to energy. It is all a game of these Qualities only. Beyond these Qualities is the Static viewpoint observing but uninvolved.

The physical existence, birth and death, old age and misery are all the product of these Qualities. The Static viewpoint observes them without getting involved. Man can attain this Static viewpoint. But how does one know this?

श्रीभगवानुवाच
प्रकाशंचप्रवृत्तिंचमोहमेवचपाण्डव।
नद्वेष्टिसम्प्रवृत्तानिननिवृत्तानिकाङ्क्षति।।14.22।।

14.22 Lord Shri Krishna replied: O Prince! He who shuns not the Quality which is present, and longs not for that which is absent;

उदासीनवदासीनोगुणैर्योनविचाल्यते।
गुणावर्तन्तइत्येवयोऽवतिष्ठतिनेङ्गते।।14.23।।

14.23 He who maintains an attitude of indifference, who is not disturbed by the Qualities, who realises that it is only they who act, and remains calm;

समदुःखसुखःस्वस्थःसमलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः।
तुल्यप्रियाप्रियोधीरस्तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः।।14.24।।

14.24 Who accepts pain and pleasure as it comes, is centred in his Self, to whom a piece of clay or stone or gold are the same, who neither likes nor dislikes, who is steadfast, indifferent alike to praise or censure;

One who has attained the Static Viewpoint is completely indifferent towards the absence or presence of Qualities. That doesn’t mean that there is no action. He simply follows the laws of nature in taking care of the body-mind system. When the Qualities act he remains calm. He is indifferent toward the consequences of any actions of the Qualities, such as, pain and pleasure, praise and censure, etc.

मानापमानयोस्तुल्यस्तुल्योमित्रारिपक्षयोः।
सर्वारम्भपरित्यागीगुणातीतःसउच्यते।।14.25।।

14.25 Who looks equally upon honour and dishonour, loves friends and foes alike, abandons all initiative, such is he who transcends the Qualities.

मांचयोऽव्यभिचारेणभक्ितयोगेनसेवते।
सगुणान्समतीत्यैतान्ब्रह्मभूयायकल्पते।।14.26।।

14.26 And he who serves Me and only Me, with unfaltering devotion, shall overcome the Qualities, and become One with the Eternal.

ब्रह्मणोहिप्रतिष्ठाऽहममृतस्याव्ययस्यच।
शाश्वतस्यचधर्मस्यसुखस्यैकान्तिकस्यच।।14.27।।

14.27 For I am the Home of the Spirit, the continual Source of immortality, of eternal Righteousness and of infinite Joy.

The static viewpoint perceives everything with total detachment. The achievement of this viewpoint is the ultimate goal. At the same time it is the joyful beginning of something new.

Final Comment

The “Me” of The Bhagavad Gita is the Static viewpoint from which any and all motion can be viewed without distortion. This Static viewpoint is beyond any knowledge. It is only from this viewpoint that the cyclic nature of the universe can be fully comprehended. The Static viewpoint remains unaffected of any cycles.

The whole universe is constructed out of the condensation of energy and its impulse. All Qualities arise from the condensation of the impulse inherent to energy. The physical existence, birth and death, old age and misery are all the product of these Qualities. Man is an energy form that is being animated by its inherent impulse. His viewpoint is being governed by the qualities of purity, passion and ignorance.

Purity governs man through his yearning for happiness and illumination, and brings happiness. Purity must prevail where knowledge is concerned. When purity prevails, the energy is harmonious, and there is not much residue that would continue as part of another life. Man evolves.

Passion governs man through his fondness for activity, and brings commotion and pleasure. Passion must prevail, where greed filled desire is concerned. When passion prevails, the energy residue is loaded with passion. It neither leads to evolution nor degeneration.

Ignorance governs man through stupefaction of senses, and leads to a life of failure. Ignorance must prevail, where infatuation and folly is concerned. When ignorance rules, the energy residue is loaded with ignorance. Such load continues as part of another life.

The universe is a game of these Qualities. Man must overcome not only ignorance and passion but also purity, in order to attain the Static viewpoint of full awareness. Full awareness requires total detachment. Man can attain this Static viewpoint.

One who has attained the Static Viewpoint is completely indifferent towards the absence or presence of Qualities. He simply follows the laws of nature in taking care of the body-mind system. When the Qualities act he remains calm. He is indifferent toward the consequences of the Qualities, such as, pain and pleasure, praise and censure, etc.

The achievement of the Static viewpoint is the ultimate goal. At the same time it is the joyful beginning of something new.
