Knowing How to Know

The Factors 1 – 5

Project: A Course on Hubbard’s Factors

The original Scientology Factors are a summation of the considerations and examinations of the human spirit and the material universe, which was completed between A.D. 1923 and 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard.

The KHTK Factors are a result of the subject clearing of Buddhism, Scientology and philosophy in general.

.

SCIENTOLOGY FACTOR # 1. Before the beginning was a Cause and the entire purpose of the Cause was the creation of effect.

This universe has neither a beginning nor end. There is no absolute Cause that created this universe. Cause-effect is simply a dimension of this universe.

Anchoring the phenomena of existence on some absolute Cause is similar to the idea of God in the Abrahamic religions. But cause gets its meaning from effect. It cannot be isolated from effect.

The phenomena of existence is perceived as it is from the basis of Emptiness, which allows no preconceived notion. One arrives at the notion of Emptiness through the Vedic process of Neti-neti (neither this, nor that). It is defined in the Heart Sutra of Buddhism.

Emptiness is a reference point more fundamental than Cause (God) because, like zero, it has no significance of its own. Emptiness is the ultimate reference point from which all phenomena are perceived objectively.

KHTK FACTOR # 1 (old): Existence is simply there. Cause-effect is a dimension of existence.

.

SCIENTOLOGY FACTOR # 2. In the beginning and forever is the decision and the decision is TO BE.

The concept of “forever” admits neither beginning nor end. The existence is simply there. It is the whole of phenomenon, which means it is continuous, harmonious and consistent.

“God-Universe” of Abrahamic religion and “Theta-Mest” of Scientology are dimensions of the universe similar to the “cause-effect” dimension. Therefore, God and universe are in continuation with each other and so are Theta and MEST. They are not separate or independent of each other.

KHTK FACTOR # 2 (old): Existence is simply being. It has neither a beginning nor end.

.

SCIENTOLOGY FACTOR # 3. The first action of beingness is to assume a viewpoint.

Viewpoint is a frame of reference. It is a natural aspect of existence. For example, there is a universal viewpoint associated with the universe. From this universal viewpoint the universal beingness can be seen as it is.

As the viewpoint narrows it cannot see the whole of universal beingness. Its narrow perspective misses the full comprehension of what is there. What is not understood is simply “explained away”.

The human beingness is capable of assuming any viewpoint from very narrow to as broad as the universal viewpoint.

KHTK FACTOR # 3 (old): Viewpoint is a natural aspect of existence.

.

SCIENTOLOGY FACTOR # 4. The second action of beingness is to extend from the viewpoint, points to view, which are dimension points.

The universal beingness has infinity of dimensions, where each dimension extends as a scale into infinity in either direction. Each scale thus contains infinity of points to view. These are dimension points.

The universal beingness may be viewed as a matrix of infinite dimensions, and dimension points as the nodes of this matrix. This means that a dimension point may be common to many dimensions.

KHTK FACTOR # 4 (old): Existence provides infinite dimension points to view.

.

SCIENTOLOGY FACTOR # 5. Thus, there is space created, for the definition of space is: viewpoint of dimension. And the purpose of a dimension point is space and a point of view.

Hubbard implies that space is the perspective one has of what is there. But, in general, space is the extent of something. “Empty space” is empty of matter only; it is not empty of energy. Overall space is the extents of the infinite dimensions of the universe.

KHTK FACTOR # 5 (old): Space is the extent of existence.

The Postulates 1 – 5 (old)

Reference: The Postulates 1 – 5

These postulates are being developed from the subject clearing of Buddhism, Scientology and philosophy in general. This is a work in progress. Constructive criticism is welcome.

.

POSTULATE # 1: The universe includes everything whether physical, spiritual, real, imaginary, postulated or speculated.

COROLLARY: The universe includes all that we experience physically, mentally and spiritually.

The word UNIVERSE is derived from a Latin word that meant “entire, all, literally, turned into one”.

Science treats universe as if it is just physical. The “physical universe” is a limited concept. It is not the whole truth. It is just the physical aspect of something bigger. That something bigger also has a spiritual aspect. We are a part of that something bigger, which we may simply call the “universe”. Multiverses are a speculative hypothesis and, therefore, part of this overall concept of universe.

Religion treats God as creator of the physical world and the life on it. But the concept of God is based on human experience and human explanation for the presence of this universe. Therefore, God is also part of this universe.

Nothing is excluded from this concept of an overall universe.

.

POSTULATE # 2: The basic substance of the universe is energy, which is animated by an innate impulse.

COROLLARY: Everything physical, spiritual, real, imaginary, postulated or considered is made of energy. The innate impulse is evident in the propagation of light.

The innate impulse is expressed through energy that constitutes everything in this universe. We see this as intrinsic motion of electromagnetic radiation, quantum fields and particles, and the electrons in an atom. At the physical level we have the agitation of gas molecules, and the Brownian motion, which occurs by itself without any external force.

The innate impulse is expressed also through the more complex activities of life, such as, self-animation, reaction and thinking. All human considerations, postulates, and opinions are made of thought energy animated by the same innate impulse of the universe. These life activities may be termed spiritual, but they are only a much more complex variety of intrinsic motions that we observe at physical level.

.

POSTULATE # 3: Energy condenses from thought to electromagnetic radiation to material objects.

COROLLARY: The innate impulse of energy condenses from considerations to flow to structure.

Thought is like space. It envelopes everything. This is the nature of energy at the level of thought and considerations. There is continuity of medium at this level. Thought condenses into electromagnetic radiation and gains the property of flow. This happen in the living body.

Electromagnetic radiation is still a continuum and it flows like a fluid; the only difference is that it is not made up of atomic particles. It can thicken up (become more viscous) with increasing frequency from a very thin state to a very thick state. The quantum does not refer to a particle but to a certain “viscosity” of energy. As energy becomes more viscous it appears increasingly rigid and discrete against a thinner background.

The highest viscosity of energy appears as the solidity of matter. The condensation of energy from fluid to matter may be seen inside an atom. Matter has structure, which we see in all material forms around us.

.

POSTULATE # 4: Space describes the extents of energy. “Empty space” is empty of matter but not empty of energy.

COROLLARY: Space contracts as the energy filling that space condenses.

COROLLARY: Different parts of the universe consist of spaces of different contractions, but space forms a continuum.

Currently, “empty space” is treated the same way as space filled with matter. Matter is rigid and discrete, as defined by its extents. The word “rigid” is used in the sense opposite to “flexible” meaning “firmly fixed or set”. And the word “discrete” is used in the sense opposite to “continuous” meaning “apart or detached from others; separate; distinct”. The dimensions of matter are depicted as rigid by Euclidian geometry. They are interpreted in terms of units that are fixed and discrete. These same fixed and discrete units are then applied to “empty space”.

But we cannot treat “empty space” with the same discrete units that are used for space filled with matter. Space that is empty of matter, is not empty of energy. Space expands as matter converts to energy. Space filled with energy should not be defined by the rigidity and discreteness of the dimensions of matter (as we do currently), but by the flexibility and continuity of the dimensions of energy as represented by wavelengths. It should take into account the contraction of space as energy condenses.

.

POSTULATE # 5: Time describes the duration of energy. The state of absolute rest is defined by infinite duration at a location in space. Lesser durations have motion.

COROLLARY: The duration of the universe in infinite. It is simply there. It has neither beginning nor end.

COROLLARY: The duration of matter forms a very narrow band in which we observe all the motion of matter. Similarly, the duration of electromagnetic radiation forms another narrow band in which motion varies per the frequency of energy. The motion in this band, however, is identified only as the ‘speed of light’ because the differences are too small to be perceived.

The total energy of the universe is always constant per the Law of conservation. Therefore, this energy, or the universe, is always there. It has neither a beginning nor an end. As a result, the universe provides a background of infinite duration or ‘absolute rest’. This was approximated by Newton as the background of stars in the sky. Against this background, the finite durations can be compared with each other. You can see which event lasted longer than another event. This comparison provides a relative measure of Time.

Our sense of time is tuned to the duration of matter. Being in the band of matter we can appreciate the differences among motions of matter. But from the same token we cannot appreciate the differences among motions of electromagnetic radiation because radiation forms a band very far away from the band of matter. To appreciate those differences, our sense of time needs to be tuned to the very small duration of electromagnetic radiation.

Know to Mystery Process (old)

Please refer to Meditation from Mystery to Knowing

“Know to Mystery” is a scale that parallels the viewpoint scale of “Objectivity to Subjectivity”. One is objective when one knows. One is subjective when one succumbs to speculation upon being confronted with a mystery.

When running this process, you start from the lowest level of “unconsciousness” and work your way up through the levels of waiting, mystery, sex, etc., until you reach the highest level of “knowing”.

At each level you are resolving some sort of fixation. If you meditate at a level for few minutes and find no fixations, simply move to the next level. You go through this whole sequence of processes several times, until all of them are flat.

The first process is,

“Think of some unconsciousness you wouldn’t mind experiencing.”

Unconsciousness is a condition wherein the organism is uncoordinated to greater or lesser degree in its analytical process and motor controls. You meditate on unconsciousness to see if any instances of such condition come up. If so then re-experience those moments, or periods in time. Run the process until it is flat.

The next process is,

“Think of some waiting you wouldn’t mind experiencing.”

Waiting is inactivity or being in a state of repose, until something expected happens. You meditate on waiting to see if any instances of such condition come up. If so then re-experience those moments, or periods in time. Run the process until it is flat.

The next process is,

“Think of some mystery you wouldn’t mind inspecting.”

A mystery is anything that remains unexplained or unknown. The anatomy of Mystery is an inability to predict, followed by terrific confusion and then total blackout. The person just shut it all off and said, “I won’t look at it anymore”. Mystery is the level of always pretending there’s something to know earlier than the Mystery. There really is nothing to know back of a Mystery, except the Mystery itself. In this process you meditate on mystery and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of some sex you wouldn’t mind looking at.”

When a person thinks he is not going to survive, he will go into the “sexing-ness band”. If you starve cattle for a while they’ll start to breed, and if you feed them too well, they’ll stop breeding. This shows that the fixation on sex is closely associated with the sense of survival. In this process you meditate on any fixation related to sex for survival and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of some eating you wouldn’t mind inspecting.”

Animals eat animals to stay alive. This is their level of knowledge. Here we have fixation on eating and the knowledge associated with it is very condensed. This is what we understand as the dog eat dog world. One has no appreciation of other people and things other than as means for their own survival. In this process you meditate on any fixation related to eating to survive and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of some symbols you wouldn’t mind seeing.”

A symbol contains mass, meaning and mobility and it is in motion relative to some orientation point. At this level a person figures with symbols. His sense of knowledge is very literal, and it doesn’t go any deeper than the surface. In this process you meditate on any fixation on symbols and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of some thinking you wouldn’t mind observing.”

At this level a person is fixated on thinking.  He is, forever, trying to figure things out. There is no progress because he cannot work or act. This is the “figure-figure” case. In this process you meditate on any fixation on thinking and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of some effort you wouldn’t mind observing.”

At this level a person got to touch everything and feel everything before he can know anything. He’ll get a mental image picture of a past incident in order to get an idea of what is happening to him in the present. He cannot observe for himself. In this process you meditate on any fixation on effort and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of an emotion you wouldn’t mind observing.”

At this level we have to have knowledge by emotion. A person has all kinds of emotions about things. He knows things by his emotional reaction to them. In this process you meditate on any fixation on emotion and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of something you wouldn’t mind looking at.”

At this level we have to look to find out as opposed to simply knowing. In this process you meditate on any fixation on looking and not simply knowing and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of something you wouldn’t mind knowing about.”

At this level a person has indirect knowledge of something as opposed to knowing it intimately. In this process you meditate on any fixation on things you only know about indirectly and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of something you wouldn’t mind not-knowing.”

There are things that we don’t know anything about and use speculation in their place. Then we start to believe that speculation to be the reality. In this process you meditate on any fixation on knowledge that is speculation only and flatten the process.

The next process is,

“Think of something you wouldn’t mind knowing.”

There are things that you are so intimately familiar with that they have become part of your nature. You don’t even notice them. In this process you meditate on things that have become second nature to you and flatten the process.

The Axioms 51 – 58

Reference: The Axioms

In the Scientology Axioms, written by L. Ron Hubbard in 1954, we have a condensation and a recapitulation of all the earlier Axioms and Logics, boiled down to a more practical, more fundamental and more forthright list. They compare best, perhaps, to the axioms of geometry; they are certainly as self–evident as that. But the axioms of geometry are really much cruder than the Scientology Axioms, since geometry proves itself by itself and the Axioms of Scientology prove themselves by all of life.

This paper presents Scientology Axioms 51 – 58 and the corresponding KHTK versions.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 51: Postulates and live communication not being MEST and being senior to MEST can accomplish change in MEST without bringing about a persistence of MEST. Thus auditing can occur.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 52: MEST persists and solidifies to the degree that it is not granted life.

MEST is persisting naturally. It stops being animated in the normal manner when Theta becomes fixated. We may call this as MEST becoming “solidified”.

KHTK AXIOM 52: MEST solidifies to the degree that it is not granted life.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 53: A stable datum is necessary to the alignment of data.

A stable datum is something already determined, and which is staying stable while other changes are happening around it. The background context acts as the stable data that helps align these changes.

KHTK AXIOM 53: A stable datum is necessary to the alignment of data.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 54: A tolerance of confusion and an agreed–upon stable datum on which to align the data in a confusion are at once necessary for a sane reaction on the eight dynamics. This defines sanity.

The eight dynamics themselves act as stable datum that helps align data. A stable datum reduces confusion by aligning data. When people agree on the same stable datum then the confusion among them reduces and the interaction improves toward being more sane. One’s culture, religion, beliefs and fixed ideas act as stable data,

KHTK AXIOM 54: A tolerance of confusion and an agreed–upon stable datum on which to align the data in a confusion are at once necessary for a sane reaction on the eight dynamics.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 55: The cycle of action is a consideration. Create, survive, destroy, the cycle of action accepted by the genetic entity, is only a consideration which can be changed by the thetan making a new consideration or different action cycles.

The cycle of action in this universe is create, survive destroy. It is a very fundamental law of this universe.

KHTK AXIOM 55: The cycle of action of create, survive, destroy is fundamental to this universe.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 56: Theta brings order to chaos.

COROLLARY: Chaos brings disorder to theta.

The innate impulse underlying this universe have evolved this universe from raw energy to what we see today. This evolution is definitely in the direction of greater order.

KHTK AXIOM 56: The innate impulse underlying this universe is evolving the universe toward greater order.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 57: Order manifests when communication, control and havingness are available to theta.
DEFINITIONS:
Communication: the interchange of ideas across space.
Control: positive postulating, which is intention, and the execution thereof.
Havingness: that which permits the experience of mass and pressure.

Order manifests itself as the elements of this universe are increasingly aligned to achieve greater continuity, harmony and consistency. All elements are activated by their innate impulse and have the ability to align.

Alignment is accomplished through communication, control and havingness, where
Communication: the interchange of ideas across space.
Control: positive postulating, which is intention, and the execution thereof.
Havingness: that which permits the experience of mass and pressure.

KHTK AXIOM 57: Order manifests when communication, control and havingness are available to theta.

.

SCIENTOLOGY AXIOM 58: Intelligence and judgment are measured by the ability to evaluate relative importances.
COROLLARY: The ability to evaluate importances and unimportances is the highest faculty of logic.
COROLLARY: Identification is a monotone assignment of importance.
COROLLARY: Identification is the inability to evaluate differences in time, location, form, composition or importance.

Ability to evaluate relative importances require the ability to recognize differences, similarities and identities and then aligning the data to ensure continuity, harmony and consistency. This is intelligence and judgment respectively.

KHTK AXIOM 58: Intelligence and judgment are measured by the ability to evaluate relative importances.

.

The above is a summary of states of being which can be used to create, cause to persist, or destroy.

Having agreed to the mechanics and retaining the agreements, the thetan can yet make innumerable postulates which by their contradiction and complexity, create, cause to persist, and destroy human behavior.
