The spirit is the aliveness of a person that disappears upon death. It has a connotation of being something supernatural. This concept has been in the domain of religion. It has not been approached scientifically.
.
Definition of SPIRIT
The spirit is associated with the aliveness of a person. The person is essentially a body-mind system. This system is quite energetic when the person is alive. Upon death, the body-mind system disintegrates into a latent thought pattern (a soul). It no longer possesses the spirit.
The spirit, thus, represents all the aspects of aliveness, such as, the ability to sense, postulate and give meaning to the universe. When the spirit leaves, these abilities go dormant. The spirit enters back into a baby body and these abilities become alive again. The spirit has to do with the awareness of the person.
The universal spirit is represented by all the activities that are occurring in the universe. The universe is very much alive. We are studying this spirit through religion, philosophy and science and that becomes our knowledge. The basic spirit of the universe is oneness.
That spirit of oneness applies to our body-mind system too. All the functions of our body-mind system are delicately balanced. They require little attention when they operate in conjunction with the natural environment.
When this spirit of oneness is fully understood, all identifications with the universe start to dissolve. The individuality transforms into the oneness of family, group, society, culture, mankind, and all life. Finally, the oneness of the universe manifests as the natural Self.

Notes
The spirit is the aliveness of the body-mind system. In that sense it is one with the body and mind and not separate. After a person dies the spirit is gone, and the body-mind system reduces to a thought pattern that has its own space. When a body is born the spirit activate its thought pattern.
Different religions have different theories about the spirit and its relationship to the phenomena of death and birth. Christianity postulates that spirit survives in a soul after death. This soul then goes either to heaven or to hell. Such theories must be examined for correct interpretation by applying the principle of Oneness.
.
Key Misconception
It is a key misconception to think of spirit as an entity. The soul is an entity but not the spirit. The spirit is the aliveness of an entity.
