SCN 8-8008: Differentiation, Association, Identification

Summary

To differentiate is to recognize or ascertain what makes (someone or something) different. To associate is to connect (someone or something) with something else in one’s mind. To identify is to establish or indicate who or what (someone or something) is.

In Hubbard’s mind, sanity is the ability to differentiate. Buddha called it mindfulness, which is to see things as they are. As this ability deteriorates, one starts to see associations when there are no associations. This ends in thinking two things are identical when they are not. To Hubbard, this is the condensation of thought as one descends the tone scale.

Hubbard says, “Differentiation is at the top of the tone-scale and is a condition of the highest level of sanity and individuality.” Hubbard is associating sanity with individuality. He does not see that individuality is an identification of awareness with a postulate. So, all awareness then filters through that postulate; and that postulate appears as a fixed individuality.

Hubbard says, “The condition of the preclear can be established readily by his ability to associate.” To associate two things, one should be able to differentiate between them first; and then knowingly postulates a relationship that associates them. If things are being identified as being the same in his mind as “A = A = A = A” he cannot associate them. His ability to be logical then depends on his ability to differentiate and knowingly associate. He should be fully aware of the postulates that exist. Buddha knew that individuality itself is a postulate, while Hubbard takes it for granted.

Hubbard correctly observes, “Insanity is the inability to associate or differentiate properly. Experience itself becomes ungovernable at the lowest depth of identity. The more fixed the identity of the person may be, the less the experience of which he is capable.” 

Hubbard says, “The widest possible differentiation exists at the moment of creation.” But he does not explain how a “thetan” is created. An individuality is the basic identity. Therefore, all individualities exist on the tone-scale and they increasingly become condensed as they descend the tone-scale. At the bottom of the tone-scale a person treats even thoughts literally like solid objects. The tone-scale provides  a good estimate of a person’s level of fixation and his capability to associate.

Hubbard says, “Mathematics could be said to be the abstract art of symbolizing associations.” It is true that mathematics provides a general method of bringing to the fore associations which might not be perceived readily without their use; but equalities must not be viewed as fixed in the real universe. Absolutes are unobtainable in experience but may be symbolized by mathematics.

Comments

Hubbard’s observations about logic are very astute. He is correct in saying that absolutes are unobtainable in experience. However, he does not follow that logic when he assumes individuality to be absolute, and postulates a thetan to be eternal.

SCN 8-8008: Related Experiences

Summary

In this section, Hubbard provides a table of relationships for the use of auditors. Each row provides three items that are closely related to each other. The three columns of the table are assigned three different positions on the tone scale. These items are supposed to be addressed to any subject.

In my opinion, the three items of each row, provide a cycle of action; and this cycle of action applies to each position on the tone scale. For example,“Start-Change-Stop” is a cycle of action. If there is a change, then it must be preceded by a start, and it must be followed by a stop. All three items are present at the top, middle and bottom of the tone scale. The cycle as a whole condenses as it descends the tone scale.

In the trio “Space-Energy-Time” energy refers to substance. This substance can also be thought and matter. Substance has extents (space), and duration (time). Therefore, Substance (energy), space and time shall appear simultaneously at each position on the tone scale. However, the substance condenses as it descends the tone scale, and so does space and time.

“Beingness-Doingness-Havingness” also manifest together and have matching characteristics corresponding to the position on the tone scale.

In the trio “Positive-Current-Negative”, a current is said to flow from positive to negative. These three elements shall occur together.

In the trio “Creation-Alteration-Destruction,” the three elements present just another view of the cycle of action. Same explanation applies to “Conception-Living-Death.”

“Differentiation-Association-Identification” are the characteristics of awareness with respect to the forms of substance. These characteristics also condense down the tone scale.

Hubbard states that ARC and Dynamics apply to each column or for any one of the above statements of experience. However, he does not explain it further.

This section by Hubbard is very sketchy. Hopefully, more details are provided in subsequent sections.

Einstein 1920 (XVII) Minkowski’s Four-Dimensional Space

Summary

The world in which we live is a four-dimensional continuum. It is composed of individual events, each of which is described by four numbers, namely, three space co-ordinates x, y, z and a time co-ordinate t.In classical mechanics, t is considered to be independent and absolute; but in the theory of relativity, t is not independent of x, y, and z.

Pure “space-distance” of two events with respect to K results in “time-distance” of the same events with respect to K’. Therefore, space and time are related on a larger scale, though this is not so apparent in the material domain. Minkowski made this very clear by presenting the time coordinate as “√(-1) ct“ so that the time co-ordinate plays exactly the same rôle as the three space coordinates.

Minkowski’s idea made the mathematical foundation of the general theory of relativity possible.

Final Comments

The four dimensions are length (x), width (y), height (z) and time (t). The dimensions are like scales and x, y, z, and t, called co-ordinates, represent specific values on those scales. These dimensions are attributes of substance. For example, the three space coordinates x, y, and z represent “a location in the space occupied by substance”; and the time coordinate t represents “the duration of substance at that location.”

The important point is that these dimensions do not exist in the absence of substance. A point  in a space occupied by substance is not dimensionless. It has four dimensions, and the fourth dimension represented by t is the inertia (rigidity or flexibility), associated with that point. Minkowski’s contribution made it possible to model this property of inertia, or consistency, mathematically.

Time (duration) is the inertial dimension. This inertia is very large throughout the material domain, and the changes in it are imperceptible; so the matter is very rigid. But this inertia is negligible throughout the energy domain, and it is hardly perceptible; so the energy is very flexible.

The four dimensions together represent the continuum of substance. There is no empty space; thus, we have matter floating in energy. There is no clear separation at the boundary between matter and its surrounding energy.

The consistency decreases from matter to energy. As a result, the flexibility increases, which manifests itself as motion. So, there is a natural relationship between consistency (inertia) and motion (velocity). This is the meaning of the contribution of Minkowski to four-dimensional space.

Summary

A cycle is a series of events that are regularly repeated in the same order. For a person, this is a cycle of havingness, when it has to do with a series of conclusions, understandings or accomplishments. But havingness does not necessarily imply fixation as it happens with identification. As long as a person does not identify himself with his conclusion, understanding or accomplishment then he is not controlled by the cycle associated with the MEST universe.

Therefore, having possessions does not necessarily subject a person to time; though the possessions themselves, being MEST objects, are subject to time. The cycle of MEST object may be stated as: creation, growth, conservation, decay and death or destruction. A cycle may be defined in terms of the motion of an object as: start, change, stop; or in terms of experience as: creation, alteration and destruction.

Past, present and future are connected to a person through his identification with body, self, family, society, postulates, goals, etc. The body goes through the stages of creation, growth, conservation, decay and death. This determines a life cycle. He may be connected with a past life cycle through his identification with the facsimiles that are carried forward from one life cycle to the next.

Hubbard talks about a person having lived through “spirals.” These spirals also go through the stages of creation, growth, conservation, decay and death. Hubbard claims that the present spirals are about 40,000 years long. Such “spirals” may be due to the person identifying himself with a postulate or a goal.

Comments


The conclusions, understanding, accomplishments, possessions, objects etc., go through cycles. Therefore, they are subject to time. When a person becomes attached to these MEST objects, he conceives himself also to be subject to time. From this identification springs a person’s fixation on self.

SCN 8-8008: Assist Processing

Summary

When a person is injured in an accident, a facsimile of that incident is impressed on the person’s mind. The facsimile is held in suspension because the sensations from the injury are not easy to assimilate. Hubbard’s solution is to put attention of the person on the incident  and have him go through it repeatedly as if it was happening to him just that moment. This will assimilate the sensations to some extent and the pain will subside. The person is then asked to visualize that incident occurring at different places and times under different circumstances and even reversing its sequence. The whole effort is to lessen the person’s fixation on the incident.

Assist consists of applying the above procedure to a recent injury. The experience is fresh in a person’s mind, and so it is easier to process. It speeds up a person’s recovery from his injury.

When the person visualizes or mocks-up the incident or an injured part, he should put it next to another mock-up when there was no such injury. It brings the injury into focus and discharges the trauma. The mock-up should be controllable by the person. If the person cannot control his mock-up, then he should simply discard it and put up a new mock-up that he can control.

Hubbard says, “Using effort to control one’s mockups is of little avail; one simply creates them. Where mock-ups are absent, one will appear if the individual will simply keep putting the thought forward that it will appear. If he puts forward the thought often enough and long enough, he will get such a mock-up.”

The person may become ill or in pain while following this procedure. The remedy for this is simply to continue with the procedure until the illness or feeling has abated. This procedure makes a person look at an injury, or a worry, or a doubt, for what it is. It is continued only for as long as it is necessary.

Comments

The facsimile is made of sensations that did not get broken up and assimilated within the matrix of existing experience. The entire handling of a facsimile is to break it up and loosen its content so they can be assimilated and perceived.
