The Philosophy of Cosmology

Recently I discovered that my thought process, unbeknownst to me, has wandered into the realms of the philosophy of cosmology – a new field that was established within the philosophy of Physics just recently in December 2011.

This article from The Atlantic What Happened Before the Big Bang? The New Philosophy of Cosmology provides a nice introduction to this latest venture in philosophy.

“This is a branch of the philosophy of physics, in which you happen to be treating the entire universe –which is one huge physical object– as a subject of study, rather than say studying just electrons by themselves, or studying only the solar system. There are particular physical problems, problems of explanation, which arise in thinking about the entire universe, which don’t arise when you consider only its smaller systems. I see this as trying to articulate what those particular problems are, and what the avenues are for solving them, rather than trying to translate from physics into some other language. This is all within the purview of a scientific attempt to come to grips with the physical world.”

This philosophy has started with a bang by questioning the Big Bang theory. “The state of Big Bang,” it says, “has to be a highly ordered state of low entropy. How can the universe begin in this highly improbable state?”

Current scientific observations show that the universe is expanding. The idea of “Big Bang” came from extrapolating this expansion of universe backwards in time using general relativity. This yields an infinite density and temperature at a finite time in the past. However, this poses the inconsistency identified above in the philosophy of cosmology.

There can be many other scenarios that may be postulated to explain the present condition of an expanding universe. One such scenario could be a resonating field that may start out in a very subtle state. But all such scenarios may contradict the postulates underlying general relativity and later developments.

Here is an interesting criticism of Quantum Mechanics forwarded by this new philosophy.

“Physics has definitely avoided what were traditionally considered to be foundational physical questions, but the reason for that goes back to the foundation of quantum mechanics. The problem is that quantum mechanics was developed as a mathematical tool. Physicists understood how to use it as a tool for making predictions, but without an agreement or understanding about what it was telling us about the physical world. And that’s very clear when you look at any of the foundational discussions. This is what Einstein was upset about; this is what Schrodinger was upset about. Quantum mechanics was merely a calculational technique that was not well understood as a physical theory. Bohr and Heisenberg tried to argue that asking for a clear physical theory was something you shouldn’t do anymore. That it was something outmoded. And they were wrong, Bohr and Heisenberg were wrong about that. But the effect of it was to shut down perfectly legitimate physics questions within the physics community for about half a century. And now we’re coming out of that, fortunately.”

The philosophy of cosmology allows us to look at the big picture outside the constraints of general relativity or quantum mechanics. This leads to interesting conjectures such as the following:

  1. Spacetime is generated from the resonance of some primeval field.

  2. The primeval field may be viewed as some theoretical ground state.

The space and time associated with this primeval field may be postulated to be infinite. At this level there is no disturbance or frequency. This is marked by the parameter of “Disturbance = 0.”

  3. This model visualizes multi-layered spacetime produced from disturbances of the primeval field described above.

The first level of spacetime may be identified as “Disturbance = 1″. The nth level of spacetime may be identified as “Disturbance = n″. As disturbance increases the spread of spacetime becomes finite and lesser. There are frequencies and physical constant associated with spacetime. The frequency increaseses with disturbance. Physical constants change too in some harmonic relationship.

  4. Increasing disturbance generates increasing inertia (resistance to motion) in spacetime.

If the electromagnetic radiation is identified with these disturbances than higher than “speed of light” velocities are predicted at the lower frequencies and lower than “speed of light” velocities are predicted at higher frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum.

  5. Inertia generates discreteness such as that of photon. At sufficiently high disturbance levels, inertia generates particles with mass.

  6. At still higher disturbance levels, particles generated are of increased frequency and complexity, and of reduced velocity.

  7. Thus come about atoms, molecules, compounds, materials, and the solidity and location of planets in the universe.

KHTK Postulate #0: There are no absolute certainties.

    .

The primeval field of this model is not absolute per KHTK Postulate #0. But what it is relative to, we don’t yet know. So, for now, this primeval field shall be the starting point of this model instead of Big Bang.

KHTK Postulate #1: All motion is relative.
KHTK Postulate #2: Awareness arises with motion.

    .

All awareness starts with relative motion. Motion is the key aspect of this model in the form of “disturbance”. This “disturbance” exists at many levels. All known manifestations in this universe are created out of these disturbances.

We may approximate these disturbances by wave motion.

KHTK Postulate #3: Physical motion is composed of physical space and time.
KHTK Postulate #4: Awareness is composed of mental space and time.

    .

The primary characteristic of disturbance in this model is spacetime. According to this model spacetime exists at many levels. These levels may be extended from physical to mental.

What we think, how we think, and what we are, may be tied to the levels of disturbances of this model; but that derivation is not obvious yet. Hopefully, someday it shall become obvious.

If there are such mental levels, they may exist between Disturbance levels 0 and 1.

For the sake of simplicity, I would like to postulate that each level of disturbance is spreading at a rate half of the previous level. Let’s see how this postulate measure up against the observations contained in http://www.universetoday.com/11889/high-energy-gamma-rays-go-slower-than-the-speed-of-light/.

Hi Vin. Good to hear from you.
From the show I saw on Discovery Science Ch. and from articles I’ve read, the 2 most likely causes for this effect are this:
      1. There are fluctuations in the fabric of space at the quantum level which interact with the very small wavelengths of gamma radiation and very little or not at all for longer wavelengths of EM radiation.
      2. There is matter out in the void of space which is barely or not visible to instruments, which interact with shorter wavelengths more than longer wavelengths. One indicator is that gamma rays are blocked by our atmosphere and interstellar clouds, whereas longer light and radio waves are blocked less or not at all.

Either way, the shorter wavelengths appear to be traveling more slowly when in fact they are traveling a greater distance. Just as light takes longer to go through glass because it is bouncing around at very slight incidence angles.

If you have discovered something which discounts these theorys or even modifies this line of thought, please let us know. We are curious.

Motion relative to a fixed viewpoint causes “redshift” and “blueshift”. Now we are getting into the physical anatomy of “illusion”.

A universal, or scientific, viewpoint is so broad that it would not be subject to this illusion. But Einstenian viewpoint, which is fixed to an object, and thus quite narrow, would be subject to illusion.

The whole Theory of Relativity applies to Einstenian viewpoint. It describes a type of illusion. This illusion is very physical and, therefore, real.

The Theory of Relativity may be called a scientific study of illusion.

The concept of time is very interesting. Here is an excellent reference: Proper Time

According to this reference PROPER TIME is a measure of the amount of physical process that a system undergoes. For example, proper time for an ordinary mechanical clock is recorded by the number of rotations of the hands of the clock. These processes are measured by ‘absolute quantities’ and do not depend upon assigning any coordinate system.

Any natural process in a classical system runs through a sequence of physical states at a certain absolute rate, and this is the ‘proper time rate’ for the system. Two identical types of systems (with identical types of internal construction, and identical initial states) are predicted to have the same proper time rates. This invariance principle is fundamental to classical physics. Thus, in classical physics we can define: Coordinate time = Proper time for all natural systems.

    This article states:

However, the distinction only gained real significance in the Special Theory of Relativity, which contradicts classical physics by predicting that the rate of proper time for a system varies with its velocity, or motion through space. The relationship is very simple: the faster a system travels through space, the slower its internal processes go. At the maximum possible speed, the speed of light, c, the internal processes in a physical system would stop completely. Indeed, for light itself, the rate of proper time is zero: there is no ‘internal process’ occurring in light. It is as if light is ‘frozen’ in a specific internal state.

I have difficulty in understanding the above. If a system is moving at a constant velocity, and nothing else is around, then one cannot be aware of its velocity. It wouldn’t matter how fast or slow it is moving. So, I am having difficulty understanding that “the faster a system travels through space, the slower its internal processes go.”

    There is some inconsistency here.

      Vin:
Wonderful post which brings several concepts to light while posing questions from different angles.

I see no inconsistency with relative time changing with relative motion. I see an intent to make a system with as few inconsistencies as possible under different conditions in different locations. Try this. Get in a spaceship and take a clock with you. Accelerate that ship to one half ‘C’. Look at the clock. It never changed rates. It is still ticking away at the same speed it always did. IT DIDN’T CHANGE.

Now, someone will say “That’s not right, you accelerated along with the clock. That puts you in the same time frame.” And there is the error in logic. The real point is that the clock did not change it’s rate of time. The only thing that changed was viewpoints. There is reasoning and intent behind this.

In any space, whether physical or mental, for interaction to occur there has to be common ground, common rules, a common environment. If we want to play pitch, distance has to be the same for you as for me. The width of the ball, the speed of flight etc. must be understood and common to all. Otherwise there is confusion, inconsistency, NO GAME. If every time you threw the ball it traveled 50mph and every time your friend threw the ball and it traveled 1000mph, you would of course say “Screw this, I’ll go someplace else to play.” (An actual incident.)

The speed of light is one of the most basic laws of the universe which make up this common ground. That is well understood. It is fast enough that in normal interaction it is instant. When all things in a closed environment operate at a pace that does not approach this speed, there is no problem with their interactions. Go left, go right, go forward, backward, no difference in operations. EVERYTHING IS FAIR FOR ALL. This is fine for a small space.

But when spaces became large, very large, and relative motions became so great at large distances, This rule of the speed of light based on the entire space did not work. The larger the space, the more it became skewed from one side to the next. For gravity to work on a large scale, constant velocities had to be great, great enough that the change in the speed of light from one direction compared to the other was noticeable. In an effort to build larger universes where more and more people could play, so that the builders could have more power and control over larger groups and environments, there had to be a solution. This point would be an entire set of OT levels on its own.

The solution was simple, it solved several problems, and caused only a few others. Do away with the notion of motion being relative to the entire space and make it an individual thing. Make it so that the law works the same for your immediate environment, no matter where in the universe you are or how it is moving compared to the universe as a whole. THIS ALLOWED FOR INFINITE EXPANSION. There were a few details to work out but it worked perfectly as long as you kept your viewpoint relatively small. ANOTHER IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THIS DESIGN.

But there had to be some common control mechanism for this law of the land, this basic construct. And that was vibration, frequency, wavelength. But wait, frequency is a measure of time, not speed. Wellllllllll, we’ll just kill 2 birds with one stone. Anything moving at a certain speed and vibrating a certain speed will travel a certain distance with each oscillation. Wavelength. Time and space tied together. Space-time. And we had a lot of experience with frequencies. It had long been used as the most common method of communication between individuals in a physical space. Give every basic particle a certain emotion (frequency) that is recognizable to all that will orient everyone to the space they are in.

We will do this by making all basic particles have a constant velocity of ‘C’. Different particles will have different frequencies. Particles vibrating at lower freqs. will travel farther between oscillations and will be larger. This will give them different properties. Massive particles will vibrate in 3 dimensions. Mass-less particles will vibrate in 1 dimension and travel in a straight line at ‘C’. Massive particles traveling at speeds relative to the observer will have their wavelengths stretched out due to the greater total distance traveled, left to right, between oscillations. This will lower the apparent freq. to the stationary observer. But to the observer traveling at speed, the distance between oscillations remains the same, and he orients his time reference to particle vibrations in his space.

Oh, a few problems would pop up such as machines that operated beyond the normal rates of experience. Different lights bending at different angles, but these were minor and actually became interesting and useful. Several things were accomplished. Space and time worked the same no matter where you were since your operating rules were based on your viewpoint. Peoples viewpoint was kept small, since things got skewed over vast distances. Peoples operating speed was kept slow since things became confusing at extreme speeds. The laws of MEST were complicated enough so that the average guy couldn’t really get a handle on it. Only the builders could “Know” how things really worked. Keep everyone happy, keep everyone in his place, keep all a little bit confused. Keep them under control and believing that you are the smartest guy around, the boss. GOD. A near perfect system.

My explanations may not be very skillful or understandable to all, but the basic principles are here.

Hope this adds at least some clarity.

      It seems to me that

      (1) Space is a disturbance that has a frequency.
      (2) There are layers of space.
      (3) Disturbance of a space generates the next layer of space.
      (4) Matter is highly disturbed space.

Is there a thought more wild than this?

    • vinaire  On January 25, 2014 at 6:08 AM

The Theory of Relativity is wild.

      (1) In isolation we cannot be aware of our velocity.
      (2) Therefore, the internal processes shall continue at their natural rate.
      (3) We may become aware of our velocity when we are taken out of isolation.
      (4) That awareness of our velocity shall slow down our internal processes.
      (5) Thus, our internal processes are controlled by the presence of other objects around us.

Isn’t that a wild idea from the Theory of relativity?

Everything (not being accelerated) is at rest in it’s own space. As an object falls toward a massive object, a planet, a star, it is NOT accelerating. It is at rest within the space which is drawing near the body. Once you hit the surface of the massive body, you are rapidly accelerated by the impact while the space continues into the body.
The irony is that when standing on a massive body, while appearing to be at rest, you are actually being accelerated through the space which is traveling into the massive body. Can you not feel the pressure on your feet, backside, at this moment?

One cannot be aware of the velocity of a system

In this context, neither is one aware of the passage of time relative to one’s velocity. Our experience of time does not slow relative to ourselves but slows relative to other frames of reference. For me, there is a falsification of the extant conclusions for the dual split experiment in this. Maybe by understanding our operators in this context and by keeping them consistent we can understand this better?

      • vinaire  On January 26, 2014 at 1:16 PM

One is not aware of one location either in space or in time, when one is not aware of the velocity.

“At the maximum possible speed, the speed of light, c, the internal processes in a physical system would stop completely.”

Which would lead me to believe that photons and other particles/waves which travel at the speed of light are basic building blocks of MEST. They do not have an internal process, they ARE an internal process. They are not made up of anything smaller or more basic. They can have a vibration but do not have anything vibrating within them. The basic building blocks of MEST are not actual THINGS, they are intentions, postulates which, when condensed together, make up things.

From the reference: Proper Time we further get

“At this point, we should mention that the concept of proper time appears more strongly in quantum mechanics than in classical mechanics, through the intrinsically ‘wave-like’ nature of quantum particles. In classical physics, single point-particles are simple things, and do not have any ‘internal state’ that represents proper time, but in quantum mechanics, the most fundamental particles have an intrinsic proper time, represented by an internal frequency. This is directly related to the wave-like nature of quantum particles. For radioactive systems, the rate of radioactive decay is a measure of proper time. Note that the amount of decay of a substance can be measured in an absolute sense. For light, treated as a quantum mechanical particle (the photon), the rate of proper time is zero, and this is because it has no mass. But for quantum mechanical particles with mass, there is always a finite ‘intrinsic’ proper time rate, represented by the ‘phase’ of the quantum wave. Classical particles do not have any correlate of this feature, which is responsible for quantum interference effects and other non-classical ‘wave-like’ behavior.”

I have difficulty understanding this too. Doesn’t the electromagnetic radiation, which may be perceived as a massless photon, have a wavelike nature with a frequency? What difference does the mass make?

In a quantum particle, mass represents a form of inertia. In an electromagnetic wave, its frequency seems to represent inertia. All electromagnetic waves do not have the same velocity. Their velocity seems to depend on their frequency.

We have found the velocity of light to be constant only in a narrow range of frequency. It depends on permittivity and permeability of space in Maxwell’s Equations. Could the “constants” of permittivity and permeability itself be dependent on the frequency of electromagnetic radiation?

    • vinaire  On January 25, 2014 at 9:48 PM

It seems that a quanta of light (photon) shall be made up of finite number of wavelengths.

In that case, a photon will be shaped more like a snake than a ping pong ball.

If the number of wavelengths per photon is constant then low-enery photons shall be like very long snakes, and high-energy gamma particles.would be like very short snakes.

We may then call very long snakes as waves, and very short snakes as particles.
